| So I forgot to post up here that I have a webshots. It contains a lot of pictures, especially of Australia. Check it out: http://community.webshots.com/user/jakefirtree I might have a wealth of things to post up here as well...it's something I have to mull over. | | |
| I don't write in this much. Sorry bout that. I promise I will put a lot in when I go to Australia. My birthday was pretty fun. I also went camping & backpacking at the Appalachian Trail. Now I'm counting down till I fly out! oh yeah. | | |
| sometimes you look at your life and you realize you really have nothing to complain about. in fact you have a whole lot to be grateful for. I'm pretty thankful about how good my life is right now! | | |
| So let me break it down...
Right now, the United States is involved in a non-terminating dispute that has cost the nation more than 2000 of its citizens' lives. Countless innocent civlian Iraqis have been slain, but they're not Americans and hence not fit for tabulation.
We embroiled ourselves in this conflict based on flimsy and false premises. Some suspect that a young Texan was concerned about sagging polls and a mediocre job performance, but we'll omit that considerationo here.
It is evident, however, that to the U.S. government, the ends justified the means. And anyone who opposed attacking Iraq, such as those ignorant CIA agents, were outed and ruined on national media.
No one believes there were WMDs in Iraq anymore, the claim that was the grand mantra of the Bush administration, and sufficient justification for a bloodbath. And the alleviation, in Iraq or elsewhere, of suffering is hardly a top priority of the US government. Don't believe me? Look at how the US feels about foreign aid.
Most of all, DON'T GIVE ME YOUR SH** about supporting the troops. I support the troops. I support their living healthy, happy and full lives in this lovely country, the United States of America. I support their retaining all their limbs and appendages. I support their sleeping peacefully, without PTSD et al.
But what do I know about war veterans? I spent an entire school year, three hours a week, interviewing veterans from World War II up to Persian Gulf I. You know what I found out? The vets who never saw combat loved the service; it was adventurous, it brought them excitement, discipline and a steady job. Not so with the combat veterans. They're the ones that have lost movement of their legs; their health is declining from exposure to toxins; they have trouble sleeping at night; they can't hold a job for more than a year or so.
People in the United States have a problem. We're so full of ourselves that we find it nigh impossible to admit a mistake. Given a quality like that, how can we blame a poor sap like Bush who just emulates our national tendencies? The point is, we need to admit that we are human, and that we can are all sometimes wrong.
What do I think when I hear about news from Iraq? I break it down to a rational decision. Do I think that it is worth sacrificing one more brave, noble soldier's life for some abstract, ephemeral and perhaps even indeterminate cause in the Middle East? Hell no.
I welcome most epithets you'd like to hurl at me. Peacenik, hippie, or even coward. But don't you dare say that I don't support the troops. It's time for this catastrophe to end. We need to bring the boys home, before they are reduced to statistics in a history book. | | |
