  • It feels like all that hard work may be finally paying off.  I found out yesterday evening that I've won an Outstanding Research Award.  It's an award I applied for with the Society for Personality & Social Psyc's graduate student committee, and am one of 4 winners.  I will be presenting my research in a symposium at our conference in February.

    My first chapter in a book is out, I had a manuscript accepted for publication (needs revisions first), have a job, etc.  Can I just tell you how good it feels?  To feel like all my hard work is finally paying off? I know it won't always be this way, but right now I'm basking in these things, and feeling truly blessed by God.  And to top it all off, I have a wonderful boyfriend, and I am moving only 90 miles away from all the wonderful people of H-town.

    It's weird though... that Puddlegum or Eyeore instinct in me wonders, how long can this keep up?  The law of averages. I hung out with Ashley yesterday and she ran into a friend of hers and as they were talking, Ashley was telling her how she was always positive, never negative.  I wish I could be that way more automatically, like that was my very nature.

  • Update

    For those of you who don't know yet... I finally got a job!!!  The bad news is it takes me away from Houston, but the good news is only about 90 miles or so.    On Wednesday, I was offered a visiting assistant professor position at Texas A&M University!  So in a few weeks, it looks like I'll be moving to College Station. Gig 'em, Aggies!  Haha.

  • Psalm 103

    Praise the Lord, my soul;

                All my inmost being, praise his holy name.

    Praise the Lord, my soul,

                And forget not all his benefits –

    Who forgives all your sins

    And heals all your diseases,

    Who redeems your life from the pit

                And crowns you with love and compassion,

    Who satisfies your desires with good things

                So that your youth in renewed like the eagle’s

    The Lord works righteousness

                And justice for all the oppressed.

    He made known his ways to Moses,

                His deeds to the people of Israel:

    The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

                Slow to anger, abounding in love.

    He will not always accuse,

                Nor will he harbor his anger forever;

    He does not treat us as our sins deserve

                Or repay us according to our iniquities.

    For as high as the heaves are above the earth,

                So great is his love for those who fear him;

    As far as the east is from the west,

                So far has he removed our transgressions from us.

    As a father has compassion on his children,

                So the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

    For he knows how we are formed,

                He remembers that we are dust.

    As for mortals, their days are like grass,

                They flourish like a flower of the field;

    The wind blows over it and it is gone,

                And its place remembers it no more.

    But from everlasting to everlasting

                The Lord’s love is with those who fear him,

                And his righteousness with their children’s children –

    With those who keep his covenant

                And remember to obey his precepts.

    The Lord has established his throne in heaven,

                And his kingdom rules over all.

    Praise the Lord, you his angels,

                You mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word

    Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,

                You his servants who do his will.

    Praise the Lord, all his works

                Everywhere in his dominion.

    Praise the Lord, my soul.

  • What a wonderful birthday I had yesterday!  Jim took me out last night to celebrate the big day. Here's us before going out:

    29th Birthday 00001

    First, he greeted me with these lovely girls:

     29th Birthday 00036

    Then he took me off to the Museum of Fine Arts. In the car, I got to open my presents:

    29th Birthday 00037

    Dunkin' Donuts coffee, chocolates, and tickets to the Yankees-Astros game in June!!

    After the museum, he took me to Eleanor Tinsley park to sit along the bayou and have a picnic dinner:

    29th Birthday 00003new 29th Birthday 00005new 29th Birthday 00006 29th Birthday 00007 29th Birthday 00008 29th Birthday 00009

    And for dessert, he brought me a little reminder of Italy (it looks much better before melting & being refrozen):

    29th Birthday 00039 29th Birthday 00040

    Aw, what a sweetie!

    29th Birthday 00012

    The only drawback to the evening is that when I got home, I was covered on legs and arms with little red spots. They don't itch though - maybe it was some chemical on the grass or something. Weird:

  • In 8 days and some hours, I am boarding a plane that will fly me off to Paris.  After a few days spent there, I will travel to Turin for my summer school, then spend a few days traveling to Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, and eventually board a plane in Milan that will take me back home.

    Meanwhile, I have 19 more articles to read, a presentation to write and prepare for the school, a dissertation draft to get off to my advisor, another manuscript that needs a new first draft, other data to enter and analyze, and I should probably plan what I'm going to do on my trip.  On top of all this, I've been sick for the past month.  I have to get well by the time I leave for my trip as my doctor at this point is worried about me getting on a plane.  I should have test results back Wednesday to see if they can figure out what's going on.

    My first instinct in this situations, unfortunately, is to fret.  But then I realize, God is in control.  That I have not because I ask not.  That if I would just ask Him, he would take care of me.  He would provide all my needs.  And then I could REST in Him.  It's comforting knowing that He will make a way when I think to myself, "this is impossible."  Now, if I could just remind myself daily to go to Him first...

  • The lyrics below are to my new favorite song, "Dancing Generation" by Matt Redman.  Whatever you're doing, whatever struggle you're facing, I urge you to download this song, turn up the volume, and let go.    Yes, I want to be a DANCING generation!!

    You mercy taught us how to dance
    To celebrate with all we have
    And we'll dance to thank You for mercy

    Your glory taught us how to shout
    To lift Your name in all the earth
    And we'll shout to the praise of Your glory

    It's the overflow
    Of a forgiven soul
    And now we've seen You, God
    Our hearts cannot stay silent

    And we'll be a dancing generation
    Dancing because of Your great mercy, Lord
    Your great mercy, Lord
    And we'll be a shouting generation
    Shouting because of Your great glory, Lord
    Your great glory, Lord

  • Hilary & the F-word

    So I've seen all these ponderings on xanga asking why do people actually like Hilary.  Seems like everyone is ANTI-Hilary.  Then there's the post about what the F-word means to you.  A couple people have responded with the word "Hilary."  I can't help but wonder... is that WHY people are so anti-Hilary?  Because she's a.... feminist???

    Because guess what folks?  I'm a... FEMINIST. (*gasp*)  And damn proud of it.  Thank you very much.
    (And I suspect if people would truly get what feminism really is, we'd have a lot more F-words out there).

    I'm not saying I'm pro-Hilary.  But I guess I just don't understand why everyone seems to hate her so (Thanks to Rachel who just supplied me a link to Simon's blog so I could understand people's views more).
