| I just need to vent a little.
Firstly, I'm getting sick AGAIN! Just when I think I'm getting
better, whatever virulent virus I have makes a comeback. Part of
the problem is that my suitemates keep our apartment really hot at
night, I think. Anyhow, I'm congested, my throat hurts, and my
eyes have that sick gross feeling in them
Now for my classes. Physics is such a waste of time. It's a
3 credit course. It meets twice a week AND has a MANDATORY
recitation, which is, of course, worthless. Physics classes here
have consistently been more work than they are worth.
As for my Russian class, I am trying so hard to like it. But I'm
getting a bit frustrated, you see, because the teacher seems to be
against calling on me (for some reason unbeknownst to me). It's
not just in my head, either. Other people have actually said it's
like she forgets I exist. This makes the entire class a really,
really boring experience. Oh, and when she does call on me (aka
maybe once or twice in the hour and 15 minute class), I never know
what's going on because it's so unexpected.
And then there's my Lit class. I like that one. Nothing to say there.
Finally, Chaos. I like this one, too. Except...I'm not
quite sure where the professor is going with it. He just tells us
stuff and proves it. We don't even have a book, so I can't glean
any information from there.
I think I'm going to be exhausted by the end of the semester from
work/school. Finals+holiday shopping in the same week?
GARGH!

| UPDATE ON MY LIFE:
Today, I SERIOUSLY didn't want to get up. It was just one of those days. But of course I did.
I skipped Java (hey, I'm just sitting in so it doesn't matter) today so
I could walk back with Tucker, who is staying in 3rd North until his
apartment is ready. We're going to get together to study for our
midterm either Friday or Saturday. We talked about where we grew
up, what our parents do, and our European travels (he's as
well-travelled as I!). He's from the capital of Oklahoma and went
to boarding school in Chicago. His mother has an MBA and does
something with that, and his father is the president of a trucking
company (I Googled it. They also OWN it, and it had $140 million
in revenue last year.).
I'm watching Sex and the City now. It has the largest group of unlikeable characters I've ever encountered.

| So I had a relatively good day today. I went to bed kind of later
than I intended to, because I was trying to do my calc hw but I was too
tired, so I ended up just talking to Devin instead. BUT it
all worked out for the best because...
Today this morning, I was in THINK Coffee (which is across the street
from Courant where my class is) getting my morning dose of caffeine
when I noticed HOT-GUY-FROM-CALC-CLASS. Of course, I already knew
he got his coffee there because
I'd seen him before. But today, he and I ended up leaving at
nearly the same time. I ended up talking to him (his name is
Tucker, and he's from Oklahoma, and he has his own apartment in
Chelsea, and he's in stern majoring in economics and minoring in
math, and we both have Sperry docksiders, which are like these
preppy boat shoes, and we both applied to 3 colleges and ended up at
NYU because we got waitlisted/rejected everywhere else) and this other
guy, Justin or something, who's also in the class outside until class
started. After class, the three of us did the homework together
but Justin left so it was just Tucker and me. It works out well
because we're about equally smart, so I don't feel like a geek or an
idiot.
[OFF TOPIC: Is the smart-gap an issue in gay relationships? Like,
stereotypically (and stupidly) the girl is supposed to be not as smart
as the guy, less professionally successful, etc. (I DO NOT AGREE
AT ALL WITH THAT!) Are the same characteristics expected of the
bottom? I mean, I would expect that they wouldn't be, since one
of the cool things about homosexual relationships is that they
basically go against society. And what about lesbians?]
Anyway, we exchanged phone numbers, and we're going to study for the
midterm (next Monday!!!) together. And yes, I know this entry was
simply me gushing, but cut me some slack. I'm trying to stop
being such a tough bitch and get in touch with my diminutive yet
existent feminine side.

| PIRATES 2: MY REVIEWTonight, I managed to convince the reclusive Nancy Lin to go see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with
me. That's not really true. Nancy isn't reclusive, and it
didn't take much convincing to get her to ditch Oggle - what living
creature can avoid the sirensong of Johnny Depp?
The movie. Right.
I shall start by saying that it was very different from the last
one. The acting was superb, certainly of the same caliber.
Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) remained the same heroic and honourable
sap. Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) developed a little more
depth. She made some morally questionable decisions (that were
unnecessarily immoral). And Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) was,
well, true to form - the sexiest pirate I have ever seen.
That aside, the differences. The plot of Curse of the Black Pearl was structured so that it could stand alone - no sequel. Dead Man's Chest, however leaves many issues unresolved, so the existence of a sequel is obvious. Dead Man's Chest
created a more mythical enemy (half-sea-creature, half-man crew, Davy
Jones, and the Kraken as opposed to a mere undead crew), so there were
more special effects involved.
Dead Man's Chest had a much darker feel to it than Curse of the Black Pearl
from the very beginning. It ultimately ended up being more
serious, depressing and explored some morally debatable "grey areas".
As for the humour and the fight scenes, they were plentiful. In
fact, at times I felt they were too plentiful, trying to draw on the
same emotions repeatedly until that font was empty. Yes, they
were comedic and entertaining. But the fight scenes ran on a bit,
and some of the laughter was stolen from Curse of the Black Pearl, which I think is really the "Curse of the Movie Sequel".
All in all, I would say that, while it lacked the originality of Curse of the Black Pearl, I sincerely enjoyed this film.

| so i've been back at school for nearly 2 weeks. i think i've done
more in that time than i did the entire school year. having a
bunch of 21-year-old roommates is a refreshing change after the
alcholoic celibacy of choices. the one downside is that i've now
acquired a taste for alcohol. 's ok. i'm a college student.
i'm only taking calc III, but i'm sitting in on intro to computer
programming, so i'm learning java. for once, i have a math
teacher that speaks english and can communicate her knowledge in an
understandable fashion. i'm really enjoying both classes.
i suppose that the downside would be that my room is not as nice as my
freshman one. at least i have the summer to adapt to the rather
small-ish kitchen. the air conditioning is rather evil, as well,
but the shower is much larger. palladium is a better dorm
overall, however, since it has many more amenities.
i'm in nutley for a day or several as my family is all out of town, and
i woke up vomiting this morning. david came over, we ordered a
pizza, had some white wine (because i hate beer), and watched the
40-year-old virgin. it was the sort of movie that is so
embarassing it would have had nancy in tears. now i'm watching
the mummy and eating graham crackers and milk.
