Oh and it was good to see other people too. Anyway so seeing them was really encouraging, and now I´m in the middle of the exams from the lowest level of hell. Its crazy hot, there´s no air conditioning and I´m expected to study all day. It´s enough to drive a man crazy and then some. Yeah Portugal kicking butt, well enough, we haven´t really been challenged yet, but we´re playing good. Alright so now I´ve updated hope everyboady is happy,

I GOT MY PLANE TICKET TO GRAD. So I´m coming I worked out my schedule and bribed some school officials used some inside information and boum freed up that little week from the 1st to the 9th so everyone can start cheering for me. I'm really excited about going. Well anyway as to life in Portugal I have "Queima da Fitas" which is like a huge grad party a month before school ends. It's like a carnaval in downtown Oporto where every uni. in Porto has a booth where their students hang out. And there are concerts from big portuguese bands and some international ones. Oh and the main part is drinking lots and lots of drinking like a week where your only goal is to see if you can completely screw your liver before the week is over there no classes no anything except drink and party. Hospitals actually prepare like big time to receive tons of students and the red cross sets up some major headquarters next door. Well it's a week away and it's all anyone talks about. So I'm doing good life is exciting and opportunities to make a difference abound.

Hey cool story so I’m setting up a pickup game with some guys and this chick in my class comes and says she would love to play too (way more uncommon in Europe than in the states) so I say sure and suddenly two other chicks also want to play, so once again I was like sure but added some extra bit about how short these girls were (the tallest of the 3 comes to my shoulder) so one thing leads to another and I end up making a bet I can beat them 3 to 1 for a dinner. Now this could be really dangerous except these girls are totally uncoordinated and I doubt I will have much trouble but we’ll see when I play them tomorrow J. Let you guys know if I get treated to dinner or have to treat 3 nice young ladies to dinner one of which I might add is extremely hot. Second semester just started for me and things are going ok schoowise I’m finally getting used to the system and the idea that, no teachers don’t actually have to help you understand what their teaching. So anyway that’s enough for today.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

well by popular demand of the teeming masses John's xanga we'll be updated after 3 something months of silence the veil will be broken and everyone can know what is going on in John's life. So where to start well life at the university is like totally different from things I had experienced before I'll give you an example of somethiung weird: I am one of the hardest working people in my class, and no I haven't changed at all in my work ethic from my bfa days, scary huh and half my class are second year students who failed their freshman year. Ok moving away from comenting on the system and towards me. I had a great semester, despite school being boring and not very challenging, I live in a dorm near my school but I go home for weekends which is an awesome system because I get some independence and stuff but I also go see my parents every weekend. Socially I am doing fine making some good friends and a gazilion acquaintances( maybe some other update I'll coment on portugal's social workings which are fascinating). I'm currently involved with campus crusade who with their fun upbeat style and their emphasis on evangelism caught my eye over intervarsity with their serious bible study style. So spiritually it's been a challenge trying to be salt and light in the middle of a lot of darkness the campus crusade group has about 12 people on average. So see you in another 3 months... just kidding I will do better this next semester on updating for people.

living strong,

Find out one day I'm excepted on Sunday, sign up on Monday go to classes on Tuesday. So I got in not at Braga close to home where I wanted but in Oporto about an hour away but its cool, got into a dorm there. I have no net for the week but I go home on weekends. Yeah things are finally moving. Kinda behind on schoolwork but nothing I can't handle. Doing all the new place new people things to do. My first night in the dorm there was a party and 95% percent of the guys got topling over drunk. What a welcome for me. I'm used to people drinking and getting drunk around me but I wasn't expecting it quite at the level of what I saw anyway what an opportunity to be salt and light. Been reading "The Pleasures of God" John Piper, and it's really encouraging me, we worship a really awesome God guys. I'm pretty excited about all the stuff going on in my life. Actually I'm in a weird thing of being super busy outside of class and super bored inside of class, teachers here are mostly morons and you have to get books independtly and study the material on your own, otherwise you fail which half the class always does apparently. So everything is new different and for the most part exciting. More updates forthcoming... maybe

John

Thursday, October 06, 2005

Well, I have decided to write again. I think by leaving larger intervals between updates it makes the updates I do write more significant. Even if this is not true it gives me the perfect excuse to slack and write infrequently. But anyway you guys probably want to know whats up with me. Well I'm still not in university yet but I get more results on the 14th the situation is weird but don't worry about it cause classes start really late here and its not a big deal. One of the significant things that has happened to me since my last update... I might not have time for all of them so I'll start with the biggies. I went to a retreat for Christian portuguese college campus leaders. It was really good for me not just for what from the speaker and stuff but what I learned about the ovreall state of the church in portugal especially relating to university youth. Hmmm I just realized there's a lot I could say about what I learned and probably not enough feasible space on this post to say it. I'll say a little though it was really good to immerse myself into portuguese cristian culture and see the diff.s with secular and also just to learn from people about portuguese culture I missed a whole lot more culture than I though these last 3 years at bfa. It was an important step to me because I really feel like God might be leading me to try and help the christian college community here in portugal. It's so small it's kinda crazy. It was actually a little hard to break in it seems a even though students from all over the country were there they all already knew each other and were kinda'vea tight knit group but eventually I got to know some people pretty well. Well this is pretty long, got more to say but maybe I'll say it another day,

I just wanted to say first of all that I am really grateful for all of you who have commented on my posts. I've been feeling kinda disconnected from everything lately. Been getting together with my buddies here in portugal but hangin out just wasn't the same. I felt like all I could talk about was bfa and you guys my friends. All they could talk about was about all this stuff and people that I don't know. Anyway we're from different worlds and although they are still great friends I don't feel like I belong. I feel like I belong with you guys my bfa friends who actually get me. Haha I just realized you have all already gone through this. I guess my post bfa depression came a little late. I just wanted to thank all you for posting comments it really helped me lately to know you guys still care about me. Oh and update on my life I got a good grade on my test, well good enough to get in where I want, but portugal's bureocracy is screwing me over on paper work. I basically wait now and hope these important papers get sent to me. A lot is happening and it would take a lot of writing to explain everything, and if there is one thing I don't like it's a lot of writing.

trusting in him(a lot more than I'm confortable with)

Don't get used to it, I'm warning you guys updates aren't comin all that frequently. So everyone else who writes these have funny little stories from their life so this is my funny little story from my life. OH first my life update. I'm going to go to college in portugal. Some of you(everyboady even Scott) didn't really understand why I chose this so another quick recap on why Portugal. Here's the top ten reasons why:

10. I get to keep playing organized basketball.

9.My family's here.

8. I like Portugal.

7. Actually a decent educational choice. I'm going to one of the best schools in Port. and its well respected in Europe

6. Actually a decent career decision International relations is what I want so international college exp. can't hurt.

5. American University in Washington D.C. 39000$ a year.

4. Universidade do Minho in Braga Portugal 800$ a year.

3. Because I can ( Tebbe's honor).

2. I already have some pretty loyal friends here.

1. I felt like God lead me here.

Alright so on from that to actually get in I have to pass the kinda like Sat subject test on all the stuff the portuguses take in class all year. For me specifically economics and english for backup. So basically I have to in month study a learn a year's worth of info on economics and take a test in portuguese and get better than much better than average grades on it than the portuguese themselves. Piece of cake!!! Lock and load!!! Bring on the pain!! Anyway this is long enough so my funny story wil wait for next time.

Love,

So this is a grand occasion my first post. Hopefully it's entertaining enough for all those who stumble unto my humble site. Yeah I'm already getting bored writing these things so, peace out,
