  • Thankful Monday, Vol. 6.

    Woot!  Two weeks in a row of Thankful Monday being on time!  Now that's something to be thankful for!  Anyway, all my thankfulness this week can be summed up in the following quote (I think I've posted this before, but awesomeness bears repition).

    ~~~
    The next hour, the next moment, is as much beyond our grasp and as much in God’s care, as that a hundred years away. Care for the next minute is just as foolish as care for the morrow, or for a day in the next thousand years–in neither can we do anything, in both God is doing everything. Those claims only of the morrow which have to be prepared today are of the duty of today: the moment which coincides with work to be done, is the moment to be minded; the next is nowhere till God has made it.
    The care that is filling your mind at this moment, or but waiting till you lay the book aside to leap upon you–that need which is no need, is a demon sucking at the spring of your life. "No, mine is a reasonable care–and unavoidable care, indeed." Is it something that you have to do at this very moment? "No." Then you are allowing it to usurp the place of something that is required of you this moment. "There is nothing required of me at this moment." Nay, but there is–the greatest thing that can be required of man. Trust in the Living God
  • Thankful Monday, Vol 5.
    I'm typing as fast as I can in a furious effort to make this, the fifth volume of Thankful Monday, the first volume of Thankful Monday actually posted on a Monday.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I wish I could come up with something a little more substantial than a list of thankfulness, but I've been in something of a list making mentality lately.  So with that in mind, here are a list of things from today, Monday, July 14, that I've been thankful for (in as near to to chronological order as I can remember).

    • waking up at just the right time to see one of the most incredibly beautiful sunrises ever.
    • finding out that some much needed auto maintenance was about $100 less than I thought it would be.
    • peanut butter toast and milk
    • The Ninth Doctor, who, while not being quite as cool as the tenth, is certainly no slouch.  (If you have no idea what I'm talking about here, I pity your poor deprived life. )
    • driving home on a clear, cool evening with the windows down and the sun roof open.
    • seeing my friend Austin who just got back from more than a year in Iraq.
    • having pork chops for dinner.
    • actually getting Thankful Monday posted on Monday.

    Oh man, I have so much to post about.

    And it's coming.  Soon.

    Thankful Monday, Vol. 4

    I'm thankful for rainy, thundery, blustery mornings.  People seem to be split into two camps on this one.  There are those, like me, who absolutely love "cranky" weather, and there are those who hate it.  For those who live in places where cranky weather can turn quickly into evil weather (i.e. tornadoes, hurricanes, and such like), this hatred is understandable.  I'd probably feel the same way.  But, as it is, to me there is nothing so relaxing as the sound of pouring rain and distant, rumbling thunder; nothing so exhilarating as a full blown, crash and bang thunderstorm.  And when they come in the morning, they usually leave me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

  • Proving once again my uncanny ability to snatch boredom from the jaws of a good time, I've opted to forsake the fire works and other such Independence Day related merriment for a quieter (read here: boring) evening at home.  It's okay though, cause I have more important things to attend to, like the NCIS marathon and deciding which book I'm going to read next.  For the record, I'm leaning towards The Magician's Nephew and Mansfield Park.  Maybe Northanger Abbey.

    That's right boys and girls, never a dull moment.

    Happy Independence Day all.

    God bless America.

    Here's a point of interest.  The xanga spell checker doesn't recognize the words Mansfield or Northanger.  Perhaps it should read more.

    Thankful Monday, Vol 3.

    Ack!  Late again!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This week, I've made a conscious effort to be thankful for the little things.  So far, the list includes:
    • febreeze laundry detergent
    • clean sheets
    • my fleece blanket (even if it does have a hideous picture of a wolf on it.)
    • a drink of water at 3am.
    • complete sets of Jeeves & Wooster dvds
    • Corner Gas being on three times on Wednesday evenings
    • the word obsolescence, which is fun to say
    • reading on the porch swing during a rain storm
    • rain storms
    • doing laundry (I know, that's weird)
    • chicken sandwiches at Subway
    • making funny faces at little kids in Subway
    • pens that you don't have to push too hard on and that don't smudge.
    • tidy rows of tomatoes, corn, potatoes and such like.
    • apple trees
    • finding books in the mail
    • not finding bills in the mail
    • getting up on the right side of the bed
    • soft grass
    • eccentric cats
    • the smell of old books and new books and middle aged books.
    • a distinct lack of oppressive heat and humidity
    • good water pressure and hot showers
    • prayer
    and more.
  • I am so sleepy, that getting up and walking the 20 feet to my bed sounds like entirely too much work.  Maybe I'll just sleep here.  Or maybe not.  I'm too sleepy to make such weighty decisions.
    goodnight moon,  goodnight stars...
  • Because etymology is more fun than pop tarts.
    • The bikini get it's name from the Bikini Atoll, a group of islands in the Pacific where nuclear bombs were tested.
    • The kkk (encouraging redneck idiocy since 1866!) get it's name from the Greek work "kyklos", which means circle.
    • The word "trivia" comes from that latin which means "three roads", because they used to post local (or trivial) information at intersections.
    See, aren't you glad you read that?
    Thankful Monday Vol. 2
    I'm fairly annoyed with myself for having been late in posting my first two Thankful Monday posts.  I'm going to try to do better next week.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    This week, I'm thankful for music, and what an amazing gift it is.  Think about it.  What else can stir us like music can?  What one single thing can move us to sadness or joy; make us want laugh or cry or shout out in victory?  What can make us feel weak and strong at the same time, like music can?  Personally, I know there are times when music can speak to me, make sense to me, when nothing else can.  There are times when loneliness creeps in and music is my only connection to the world.  Then there are other times when I'm overwhelmed by the world and music takes me to a place of solitude.  Other times I'm afraid, and a particular song will make me feel brave again.

    Music is sanity and beauty and courage and a fresh perspective.  Music is light, and poetry, and cool hands on throbbing temples.

    Music is a gift.

    He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

  • Real Life.

    You know, I’m pretty sure that when I signed up on xanga, there was some notion in the back of my head that this would just be another passing fad, that it would, like so many other internet things (myspace, mannacabana, etc., etc.,), hold my attention for a week or two, or until I got caught up in some good book or something and forgot all about it.

    Well, whether I had that notion or not, I’m glad that it wasn’t and that I didn’t. (wasn’t a passing fad and that I didn’t forget all about it. Do try to keep up. ) I’ve met some really wonderful people on xanga, and a few of those people have become real, honest to goodness friends.

    So, needless to say, when I got a chance to meet one of these friends face to face, I was completely thrilled (and not a little bit nervous!). I met up with Aimee and her crew, who were road tripping it through my little corner of the universe on Friday, for a meal (and to give them a break from a very long drive) at Applebee’s. I have to admit, I think I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of new faces, but I adapted pretty quickly and had an absolutely fantastic time. I really hope that they did, too.

    So, here’s to my xanga friends. I hope that we all get to meet in “real life”. And for the one that I have, I really hope we get to again.

Interests

Well, to an extent that is probably more than strictly normal, I am fond of: books, book stores, particularly used book stores, photography, fly fishing, C.S. Lewis, Robert Frost, P.G. Wodehouse, G.K. Chesterton, history, thunderstorms, guns, farmers markets, hammocks, playing chess poorly, contemporary christian music, Irish things, college football, the Discovery Channel, living in the country, astronomy, mountains, the beach, campfires, writing letters, taking walks at dusk, watching movies, quoting movies, trivia of all kinds, hot dogs on english buns, and a myriad of other curious odds and ends that I can't really think of at the moment
