Unrealistic expectations: Magazine pictures are electronically edited and airbrushed. Many entertainment celebrities are underweight, some anorexically so. How do we know what we should look like? It's hard. The table below compares average women in the U. S. with Barbie Doll and department store mannequins. It's not encouraging. (Health magazine, September 1997; and NEDIC, a Canadian eating disorders advocacy group)

Eating Disorders affect 5 - 10 millions Americans and 70 million individuals worldwide. (Crowther, et al. 1995)

Approximately 1 million males have an eating disorder. (Crowther, et al. 1995)

At least 50,000 individuals will die as a direct result of an eating disorder.

The most common behavior that will lead to an eating disorder is dieting. (AABA, 1998)

It is estimated that currently 11% of high school students have been diagnosed with an eating disorder. (ANAD)

Time Magazine reports that 80% of all children have been on a diet by the time that they have reached the fourth grade.

15% of young women have substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. (National Eating Disorder Screening Program)

The diet and diet related industry is a 50 billion dollar a year enterprise. (M. Maine, 2000)

81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat. 51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet. (Mellin et. al, 1992)

2 out of 5 women and 1 out of 5 men would trade 3 to 5 years of their life to achieve their goal body weight. (Rader Programs)

The average woman is 5"4’ and weighs 140 pounds. The average model is 5"11’ and weighs 117 pounds. Most fashion models are thinner than 98% of American women. (Smolak, 1996)

If today’s mannequins were actual human women, based on theoretical body fat percentages, they would probably cease to menstruate. (Rader Programs)

91% of women surveyed on a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting, 22% dieted "often" or "always." (Kurth et. al, 1995)

35% of "normal dieters" progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 20-25% progress to partial or full syndrome eating disorders. (Shisslak & Crago, 1995)

The mortality rate for anorexia is higher than for any other psychological disorder. In fact, it’s the number one cause of death among young women. Five to ten percent of anorexics die within ten years of onset, 18-20 percent die within twenty years of onset, and only 50 percent report ever being cured. (ANAD)

0.5% - 3.7% of females suffer from Anorexia Nervosa in their lifetime. (NIMH, 2000)

1.1% - 4.2% of females suffer from Bulimia Nervosa in their lifetime. (NIMH, 2000)

2% - 5% of the American population experience Binge Eating Disorder. (NIMH, 2000)

10%-25% of all those battling anorexia will die as a direct result of the eating disorder. (ANAD)

Up to 19% of college aged women in America are bulimic. (Rader Programs)

Bulimia often occurs in athletes such as gymnasts, wrestlers, dancers, horse jockeys, football players, and runners. (1996)

A Study conducted by Cornell University found that 40% of male football players surveyed engaged in some sort of disordered eating behavior. (Newsweek, 1994)

Men constitute as many as 40% of those exhibiting Binge Eating Disorder. (DSM IV, 1994)

The onset of Binge Eating Disorder usually occurs during the late adolescence or in the early twenties. (DSM IV, 1994)

According to The Center for Mental Health Services 90% of those who have eating disorders are women between the ages of 12 and 25. (ANAD)

According to a recent study, over 1/2 the females between the ages of 18-25 would prefer to be run over by a truck then be fat, and 2/3 surveyed would rather be mean or stupid. (Graessar, 1996)

42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner (Collins, 1991).

For all you ana and mia's i just wanted to educate you on some simple facts in case you didn't already know...... because the blue ones are what i experienced and eventually made me stop because it scared me so much.

Ana Physical complications:

  • gastrointestinal problems: irritation of esophagus, stomach, salivary glands and throat from persistent vomiting
  • damaged or discolored teeth: gastric acids erode enamel
  • lung irritation: choking while vomiting causes food particles to lodge in lungs, causing inflammation
  • chronic loss of bodily fluids: depletes blood potassium, sodium and chloride levels, resulting in muscle
  • spasms, weakness, irregular heartbeat and kidney disease

Mia Physical complications:

  • hair loss
  • gaunt, hollow facial features
  • shrunken breasts
  • dry skin
  • bruises
  • sharply protruding bones
  • cold and blue hands and feet
  • delayed puberty: pre-adolescent females fail to menstruate and develop breasts at normal age; in males, testosterone levels might remain low, leading to impotence
  • menstruation: hormone levels drop, alerting the body that it cannot support a fetus; menstruation becomes irregular or stops completely – can result in temporary or permanent infertility
  • permanent bone loss: susceptibility to stress fractures and osteoporosis
  • mood changes: impatience, irritability, depression, suicidal tendencies
  • insomnia, constipation, sensitivity to cold, kidney failure, abnormally low heart rate and blood pressure

just an FYI of what you're putting your body through............ plz be careful, especially your girls who wants to have children someday- you may no be able to if you keep this up!

Because this is just gross...........

Good Site for other info...

Much love and support

Hey Girls..........

i just made this xanga and i'm not quite sure what i'm gonna do with it...

so for right now here's my story:

i'm 17, i live in OP, kansas and i used to be bulimic my freshman and sophmore year but now i'm recovered. i came across so many mia and ana sites and it really made me start thinking about how i felt during me ed a year ago. even though i still think about it here and there i recovered surprisingly quickly and it was NOT easy!!! but it is so worth it!

i lost about 30lbs in 8 months....but as soon as i started eating and keeping it down, i suddenly put on all this water weight and gained a lot of it back!! i know this sounds bad but i'm being honest..... this doesn't happen to everyone. i started freaking out b/c the last think a teen girl with an eating disorder wants to be told is "if you keep eating you'll lose the weight" which eventually came true, but it was hard work. i will never forget though the feeling i got the first day i went without throwing up anything! i had soooooo much energy and i was so happy, even though i was so full (mostly from all the water!)

anyways i'll continue to say more but i actually have some hw to tend to. in the meantime.... i would love to talk to anyone so IM me or leave a comment plz!
