I just got accepted into a masters program... the one that was my first pick.

It's Roosevelt University's program in Gender Studies / Queer theory, which, though perhaps a little obscure, feels like a really good place for me. There's a very strong emphasis not only on academic engagements but also activism and application of conceptual frameworks used in feminist/queer theory. Which is very exciting to me.

I'm told by multiple faculty in Gender studies / Ethnic studies (many of whom have appointments in both) that a MA will make me significantly more competitive for a PhD program, especially the one I REALLY want to get into - the HistConn (history of consciousness) program at UC Santa Cruz, where I could potentially work under Angela Davis or Donna Harraway.

For now I'm really glad I got into this MA program. I've been wringing my hands for the last few weeks, driving Jon crazy with my worrying. The head of the program actually emailed me to say "you should be getting an acceptance letter in the mail soon, but I personally wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your application packet" blah blah blah and she's looking forward to working with me. That seriously made my day, and occaisoned a weekend of relaxation and solitary celebration (though maybe some other form of celebration might be in order). Although sadly, now I'm behind on my work. Haha.

In other news, I'm growing my hair out. I'm not cutting it, I refuse. It's time for me to let this shit grow!

Let's see, what else is new?

I'm totally busy this semester. I have no less than 4 research projects. 1 a senior thesis, which will probably ultimately be my MA work as well. Another for my "politics of fashion" course, where I'll be looking at similarities and differences in dress as a colonial force between colonized peoples in the US (i.e. American Indians) vs. colonized and "formerly" colonized peoples outside the US (e.g. Indian Indians, east Asian peoples, African peoples, etc). I'm also doing an ethnographic project for another class, but that's (thank god) a group project. And then I'll be doing research papers for my Race/Sex/Deviance class. I'm going to steal my friend Bess's idea, and try to look at Homonormativity as a colonizing/segregating force esp. in New York City (which, in all actuality, is also stealing from the incredible scholar Martin Manalansan, here at UIUC).

So - wuts new with you?

CONGRATULATIONS!

Kev, your DC mother and I are so proud of you!!!

(Does this mean I don't have to fill out that recommendation form that's still sitting in my inbox?)

I hope you and Jon can come up for some of your spring break!
