Five University of Texas at Austin students on their way to a pre-med honor society conference in Missouri were killed Thursday night when they made a fatal U-turn into an 18-wheel tractor-trailer.
Four of those killed were from the Houston area. They included a Spring woman who graduated at 15 and enrolled with $265,000 in scholarships and a Sugar Land woman who'd just learned she'd been accepted to Baylor College of Medicine.
The group included two couples, one of which had just gotten engaged.
"They were all excellent people," said William Nethercut, faculty adviser for the UT branch of the Alpha Epsilon Delta honor society, whose national conference began Friday at the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis. "Intelligent, motivated, nice. I feel terrible for them, and their parents."
The students had pulled over to the shoulder of a Missouri interstate about 9 p.m. to check a map. After deciding they'd missed a turn, they apparently turned directly into the path of the tractor-trailer.
None was wearing seat belts.
Four of the students were pronounced dead at the scene: Michael Woodward, 22, of Austin, the driver; Stephanie A. Wilson, 20, of Houston; Fan Sun, 18, the early graduate of Spring High School, and Lan Nguyen, 21, of Sugar Land. .
Nikolaos Simeon, 20, of League City, was flown to Arkansas Methodist Hospital, where he died at 10:48 p.m.
