| "Follow Me" Matthew 8:18-22
18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." 20Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
21Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
22But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
__________
There are a number of unsettling truths that surface as I examine what it means to "follow" Jesus. In the passage above we find that Jesus is addressing His followers as it relates to the obstacles that stand in the way of following Him.
This particular passage comes at the end of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon Jesus has just preached the Beatitudes where He redefines what it means to be blessed. He redefines the Law and states that He is the fulfillment of the Law. He also preaches and gives new meanings to the terms "adultery", "murder", "divorce", and "oaths". Jesus doesn't stop there. He goes on to challenge His followers to "love your enemies" and to "pray for those who persecute you". Jesus then finishes up with a lesson on how to pray, fast, view money and a challenge not to worry.
As we now pick up with the passage above we find that a large crowd has gathered as a result of this sermon. I realize that as we come to the Lord we are drawn by what we hear. The words of the Lord are speaking to us and we are captivated by the message because He is speaking to a very deep place within us where no person has spoken before.
There are many people who come to God because of the message that they hear. Today we can see that many people all over the world have heard the message of Jesus Christ and here in America, even in Southern California where I live, many people come to hear this message of hope and salvation. But, is that following Jesus?
"18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake."
Every great move of God often starts with a huge crowd yet I realize that Jesus does not stay with the crowd. He decides to leave the crowd and travel to the other side of the lake. It's one thing to sit and listen to a sermon week in and week out and think that we are following God and, yes, it does start with coming to church and listening to what God has to say, but Jesus is not stationary. We have to ask ourselves, "Will I move when He moves?".
It is interesting to see that in the passage above that the progression is first the crowd, then it immediately shifts to the individual. Jesus starts out speaking to the crowd but what He really desires is for individuals to follow Him. We all know the crowd mentality is such that it is exciting to be a part of something everyone else is a part of. Some of the best times in my life have involved crowds of people. It's very easy to hide in a crowd, not have to commit, kinda blend in and stay unnoticed, feed off the excitement of others. There is nothing wrong with being a part of an exciting movement of God. In fact, God stirs us and gets us excited about the journey ahead. The problem is that when you start following Jesus you begin to notice that the crowds thin out and what is really happening is that Jesus is beginning to identify his true followers. He is wondering if you will follow regardless of what others think.
19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
These are the words of a man who has been moved by what he has heard. We profess similar words to our Lord. Will we really follow Jesus wherever he goes? The teacher of the Law declares this as Jesus decides to journey on. I would like to think that his words were sincere but how many people follow Jesus because everyone else is doing it. How many people follow Jesus because of the crowds of people that are attached to His words? How many people follow Jesus initially because of the excitement of the crowd or how it made them feel?
20Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
Jesus responds to the teacher of the law rather oddly. We would have expected Jesus to say something to the affect of "great!" or "glad to hear that!" but Jesus knew the true motive why the teacher wanted to follow Him. He tells the teacher of the law that the animals have a home but that he doesn't have a place to lay his head at night. Jesus was telling him in laymen's terms that,
"You see all these people and it is easy to say you want to follow me now but tonight when all these people go home I will be alone and without a place to sleep. Will you still follow me then?"
Another way to look at this encounter with the teacher of the law is to examine jewish customs. It was customary and not unusual to take a person in if they needed a place to stay, more so if that person was a respected teacher who taught the word of God. That person by rights and custom could ask anyone who benefited from the teaching to stay at their house. So when Jesus explains to the fellow teacher of the law that he does not have a place to stay we find that the teacher does not even offer to take Jesus in. Jesus seems to be testing whether or not he really meant those words, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
That is what we Christians agreed to when we decided to follow Jesus. We decided to follow him "wherever you go". Yet a lot of us have responded like the man above. We didn't really mean "wherever", we were just influenced by the excitement of the crowd but not really aware of just what "wherever" truly means. When Jesus calls us on it, when he wants to come hang out with us tonight (figuratively speaking), we don't respond as we should because we didn't really buy into this whole following thing for reals.
That is the hard pill we have to swallow which is that most of us stay with the crowd and think we are following but we are not. We can see that the man was even a teacher which you think gets him off the hook but perhaps that is even worse. How sad is it to teach the words of God, to know the words of God but to not follow the one who actually said them. What good are they if we are not prepared to follow them?
The second man that Jesus encounters is a "disciple". A disciple is simply a "follower". So this person had decided to follow Jesus Christ as well.
21Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
22But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
It may seem cold what Jesus said to the follower who had to take care of his dead Father. It seems that Jesus is not empathetic with the disciples' situation. However, how many things in life could potentially delay our following Jesus? There are a number of different situations and circumstances that can arise that will hold us up. It is important to see here that the excuses are valid and real yet they stand in the way of us following Jesus. The burial of the dead in the Jewish custom lasted anywhere from 3 to 7 days including a time of mourning so really what the disciple was telling Jesus was that,
"Jesus, I know I said I was going to follow you but for the next 3 to 7 days I am going to take a break and deal with this death I had in the family. "
If we start to allow situations in life to deter us from following God then we will never get to where God wants to take us even though the situations are real and pull at us. Jesus is saying to the disciple:
22...."Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
"Let the dead bury their own dead." Jesus is telling the disciple that people who are more concerned with the cares of this life as opposed to following Him are "dead". That sounds pretty cold, but it is the reality of following Jesus. What excuse do you have? I am here to tell you that there will never be a good enough excuse to following Jesus. He is life itself. How can we be more concerned with things that are dead than the one who lives forever?
What excuses do we have? Whether it is time, family, health, culture, personal belief, problems, pride, the cares of this life, is it more important than Jesus? "Follow Me", he says to all of these things. It's easier said than done. But we must leave these things behind and follow Jesus because that is the only way to stay close to the one we said we would follow wherever He would go. He leads us to life itself.

| The Interpretation, Last Night's Dream
The interpretation of the dream I had the other night came to me today. I stayed home from work due to a pretty bad back pain and headache. Then my brother, Todd, called me and I told him the dream and we began to work through the details of it. As I laid there explaining it to Todd I began to see that the dream served as message to me.
My dad represents God the Father in the dream. It is interesting that we are driving through a "rustic" landscape and I am being chauffeured by my dad to a big house in the distance. The big house I thought represented heaven but in actuality it represented a place of personal comfort. My dad, or the father drove up to the house but drove right through it to show me a game that was being played in the back.
The game was a field hockey match that represented the game of life. This particular game being played in the game of life that the Father wanted me to see was the struggle between the generations. The younger women were struggling with their mothers and ultimately with themselves. The older women on the field did not only represent their mothers but even the older version of themselves. Beating age at it's own game was a struggle the Lord showed me was a very real thing for women in this generation. My comment about the game,"it is pointless", was because I understood that the game was not really a game of winning and losing, but only losing. The crowds or the world cheering on was the motivation for the game being played in the first place. Every time the younger women scored a goal against the older people cheered and the older women became more defeated. God was showing me that women who don't except their age fall into a trap later which ends in defeat. Playing the age game became a humiliating experience that made them despise youth and also their old age.
As I left the match and climbed back into the vehicle the Father was driving we entered back through doors in back of the house to leave. I was still being chauffeured by God through the house but this time the path was narrower and I questioned whether God could drive down the path without hitting something so I looked out the back to make sure.
The Lord revealed to me that there was a period of time that I was more concerned with the "comfort" of the house instead of the journey I was on. I was making sure, by looking out the back window, that God was not going to bump into the precious items of the house, the precious item of my personal comfort. The first time through I didn't even care but the second I was very concerned about messing up the house because the path was narrower. As I looked back toward God who was driving he disappeared. I found myself walking on a path through the house of comfort. When the path gets narrower the obstacles that are on the side of the path get closer. Those items become more distracting when they are closer.
The Lord revealed to me that my comfort was not where my focus should be but on Him. He showed me that the "house of comfort" is a house that presents many fruitless choices which were expressed through each door I open in the house that lead to no where except more doors and that those doors represented more fruitless choices. Part of being led by God is that He closes doors too and opens the right ones but when you choose with your comfort in mind then every choice that comes seems like a good choice because it is a choice that makes you more comfortable but no fruit comes of it. You are running through a house that is growing dimmer and dimmer with every mundane choice.
As I heard my dad scream "Danger!" it became clear to me that I was in a dangerous situation making choices like that. The Lord revealed to me that focusing on those distractions was a danger to me because it presented choices that did not take me anywhere with Him and where he wants to take me.
The journey out of the house of comfort with the Lord was jeopardized when I placed more importance on the comforts that surrounded me rather than on where God was leading me which was back to the rustic landscape that changed with every mile progressed. I realized that there would probably be more houses with more games being played out back on this journey with God. The point was to examine the game and then climb back in the car and keep my eyes on the driver who is God, letting him take me to the next lesson. Don't look to the right or the left because that is not where I am going.
This dream taught me some things about the choices that I have been making. I realize that my comfort is not where the Lord is leading me nor should it be something to lay hold of. He is taking me in a direction that does not stop at this house. If I stop here for a long period of time I will get caught up in the game of life going on out back and that is a pointless affair that ends in either selfish pride or envy and defeat. That game is not just about the generations but about anything out back that has people held up on the journey of life. Too many people are in those stands, and in that game. Too many people are trapped inside that house.
Being led by the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way to find a meaningful life and to avoid the games that are played in the game of life.
Like I said last week in "Coming up for Air" I have been underwater, in the deep, but now I have surfaced to find that I can no longer see the shore. Now I have to start swimming to where God wants me next.

Yuki No Hana by Mika Nakashima (English Translation)
A man’s shadow lines the pavement You walk in the twilight Always holding my hand If I’m by your side, I might not have to cry
The winds becomes cold And I can smell winter Gradually, in this city the seasons will change as you come close to them
This year, the first snowflowers bloom as we draw closer As I look upon this time the hapiness overflows in me If we depend on each other’s love, we’re not weak I simply, love you These thoughts are straight from the heart
Whatever happens, as long as I’m with you; I get the feeling that I can overcome anything I know we can have this kind of life forever So I pray that it will continue like this
The wind sways the window and at night I wake up shivvering I’ll chance any sadness by putting a smile on my face
The snowflowers flutter down outside the window Though I don’t know why they stop falling we will dye this city We may think “for who’s sake are we doing this?” But we know it’s because we know love
If you ever get lost I’ll become a star, and light your path At night, when you smile, or get wet with tears I’ll be by your side, always and forever
This year, the first snowflowers bloom as we draw closer As I look upon this time the hapiness overflows in me If we depend on each other’s love, we’re not weak It’s simple, I just want to be with you like this forever So I can feel your gentleness
Pure white snowflowers, pilling up in this city In our hearts, we quickly draw our feels, I’ll be with you forever, from this moment on...

| Last Night's DreamLast night I had a pretty disturbing dream. It was so disturbing that I remember it in detail. I dreamed that I was traveling with my dad in a rustic raised up Toyota Land Cruiser over what appeared to be a rustic countryside. I was riding in the back seat and my dad was driving the vehicle. I could only see the back of his head but I knew it was my dad by the color of his hair and skin and by the way his hands looked on the steering wheel. I could pick out those hands among a million. In the dream I looked out the window and it seemed like I was on an English or Scottish country estate because I saw a rock wall surrounding a big mansion in the distance. As my dad drove toward the mansion the two giant doors in front opened up and my dad drove directly into the house! In the house there was a path that cut through the giant living room and out the back through two additional giant door to were I could see a huge crowd that was gathered to watch a field hockey match. There were big stands filled with people and there was no room for a seat. So I peeked through the fence to watch the match and I could see two teams playing against each other. One team was a group of young girls around college age and they were arguing with the other team that appeared to be their seniors, around the age of 65 and up! There seemed to be a problem with who should gain possession of the ball after what seemed like a questionable call by the referees. After the refs conferred with one another it was decided that the younger team would get possession and shortly after the whistle blew to resume play the younger team charged down the field and scored a wildly contested goal against the older women. As they celebrated the score I could see on the older ladies faces a look of defeat and exhaustion. In my dream I turned from the game thinking, "This game is completely pointless" as I knew the older women could not match the energy and athleticism of the younger team. I wondered why so many people had turned out to watch what was obviously an unfair match up. But then I wondered why those older women even agreed to play in the same game as the younger ones. With questions in my head I went back to the car where my dad was patiently waiting for me. As he started up the car and drove back toward the giant doors we had come through I thought about what I just saw. Inside the house it seemed like the path that we had come through to get to the field in the back of the house got noticeably narrower. I looked out the back window at one point because it seemed like my dad was going to knock over a coffee table but as I looked out I could see the back of the car barely missing the expensive furniture that was all around. He was navigating smoothly without error. As I looked toward the driver seat to voice my pride in his driving skills I realized that the whole car and my dad had disappeared and now it was just me walking on the narrow path through the big mansion. As I walked the rest of the way through the house I felt the house growing darker and darker behind me so I started to run. As I ran I realized that the path that I was on was not the same one that led out of the house but one that just seem to take me deeper and deeper into the mansion. As I flung open door after door in the mansion, more doors were presented and I felt like instead of leaving the mansion I would be lost inside of it. As I tumbled through room after room, half trying to find the exit and half wondering what was behind the next door, I heard my dad's voice yelling, "Danger! Danger! Danger! Danger!" As I shook violently in my bed I suddently woke from the dream breathing really hard and my heart beating really fast and I wondered what the heck all that meant. | | |
| Presidential "Race"
A few blogs back (Tuesday, October 24, 2006) I told you guys to watch out for Barack Obama and now he is closer to becoming the democratic hopeful for the race toward the Presidency. Many political analyst have said that Barack's campaign is changing the political landscape of the entire country which is shocking to those who have relied on those demographics for so long. Along with Hilary Clinton, a woman candidate, they are are making history. Why do you think people are so interested in these candidates? Are we long overdue for such? I am curious to know your thoughts on it. Whether you support Barack or not you have to eventually ask yourself how come the nation has come out in such huge support for him? I was particularly impressed with his 2004 speech made at the Democratic National Convention where John Kerry was the nominee running against a Bush second term. In that speech many who heard it secretly wished he was the candidate. I know I left feeling like, "Now why can't we have a guy like this run for President?" Eventually that question was answered as Barack would throw his hat into the Presidential ring to duke it out for the nomination. There are some interesting facts that I discovered concerning his possible nomination. I discovered that if Barack wins the nomination he will speak at the Democratic Convention. The convention will be held on the same day that Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. It may not seem like a big deal for most people but to the African American community it was one of the most significant events to happen since Brown v. Topeka Board of Education where segregation became illegal in the school system, or the enactment of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964. The promise of a Black President will be the next. Race isn't everything but when the past 43 Presidents have been white men, the thought of anything other that the norm is pretty darn exciting regardless of what race or gender you are. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the days ahead. | | |
