College Life, episode 2

Ok guys....  due to popular demand, I have decided to update (....applause...)

Long story short - I LOVE college.  Furman is amazingly beautiful.  It never ceases to amaze me.  I walk outside and my conversations and thoughts always return to the "I love Furman" sentiments.  God is good!  Furman is amazing!  I love life!

My classes are going well.  I'm really enjoying myself.  I love taking classes that I'm interested in.  This semester I have:

History 11 - History of the Modern Era.  Taught by a Romanian professor with a great accent.  Love this class.  Have to read on average 200 pgs a day, sometimes more or less, give or take 50 pgs, but I'm learning a lot.

Political Science 12 - Intro to World Politics.  Interesting class.  LOVE subject matter (hence the International Relations major).

Music 16 - Music History - Great class.  Taught by Malvern, an AMAZING entertaining brilliant guy.  I think everyone should be a music major their freshman year JUST to take this class.  Unfortunatly for us, this class is now team taught (so Malvern can be sent to Italy for the benefit of those study abroad people).  Bummer for us.  Not enough Malvern to go around

Music 17 - Music Tech - Only class that I'm not in love with... and could do without.  At least its easy.

Applied Music - Piano.  I'm loving it.  Dr. Parsons is great

Well.  That about sums up my life with classes.  Other than that I'm in Chorale (choir).  I'm also accompanying singers and what not.

Now for everyone's favorite part...  pictures!!!!!

hall girls

These are girls on my hall during Orientation week.  We had to dress up as hippies.  It was....weird.  Furman is such a preppy school, lol.

my tie

This is a picture with my hall before "My Tie".  If you are wondering, "My Tie" is a dance (for freshman) during like the 1st week of school.  The way it works is the girl has to ask the guy, but the way she does it is she gets her roommate to ask HIS roommate for his tie.  Yeah.  So it's really weird, but that's why we all have those ties.  That's how they know which girl is their date.  Complicated.  Anyways...

gorgeous girls

My friends Liz and Maggie and me before My Tie.  We all wore black...awwwwww...

football

Me and my friends at a football game.  Story with me and football - I have come to the realization that I don't care about football.  I went to like 3 games, but never made it through a whole one.

Well...  that's all for now.  Hope that satisfies people.

College Life

Hey Guys,

Time to update I guess.  For those of you who don't know, I have started the mysterious and excited world of College life.  I am now a Freshman at Furman University.  I'm loving it here.  Actually, classes haven't even started yet, but I can't wait until they do.  This week has been filled with moving in, getting to know people through "Forced Fun" events, as we like to call them and trying to figure out how to manuver ourselves around the campus.

I thought I would share some pictures of my dorm in its present state- most likely not it's final state, but a comfortable arrangement nonetheless.

This is my beautiful comfy bed.  And my wonderfly soft blanket.  And my lovely corner with pictures of my family and friends.  If you can't determine a picture of yourself, send me one and I"ll put it up

Here is my desk and my bed.  Desk is somewhat messy.  Just wait until school starts...

Here are my very highly prized pictures of Paris that I bought while I was there last year.  Great fun.  I LOVE these pictures.  Thus, they are placed above my bed.

Here is a great pillow that I bought on the last day I was home.  It was 70% off.  I was pleased.

Here is my roommate Brittany.  She's great.  We have tons of fun together.

Our hall theme is "Aladdin" so our hall has much Aladdin paraphanalia.

That's my nametag.  We met one of our sister halls and some of the girls never remember my name but they call me Jasmine because they say I look like Jasmine.  Funny funny...

So yeah.  Give me a call anytime.  Use my cell.  Or send me a package at or happy letter at:

We're Back!!!!!

Hey Guys!

I"m back from Portugal.  I've been back since Friday night.  My body is still on Portugal time a little bit.   Meaning - I'm going to bed at 9:30 and waking up at 6 (something I NEVER do).

The trip was great.  I had a blast.  I wish I could go back.  Maybe next year.  Instead of giving you the paragraph version, I'm going to post some pictures because after all, a picture is worth 1000 words (or so they say).

This is me and some of Porto (the city we were based around.  2nd largest in Portugal.  Right on the ocean (hence the name PORTo).

Fun with grapes.  Don't ask.  Missions trips make you crazy at meal time.

More fun with grapes.

A scary rodent.

Luggage

Work - while we were there, we painted (hence the scraping of the ceiling), did a lot of landscaping, tore up a playground and instituted a volleyball court, did an irrigation system, and put cement insulation on the walls.

Fun at the beach.  The water, although beautiful, was deathly cold.  We found out later that the reason behind the freezing water was the fact that it all came down from the arctic ocean.  COLD.  But still fun

Fun with go karts.  Ben found these old go karts in the shed and so after work one day we had a tournament.  Arlene and I came in 3rd.  We should have won.  If Christian hadn't stepped on our wheel.  I'm still bitter about that.

On our tourist day, we visited a place called Fatima.  It is one of the 3 biggest Catholic shrines.  Supposedly, Mary appeared to three kids at this tree (shown in the background) and so the village went ballistic and they built an entire facility (much like the vatican to those who have been there) around the tree.  It was kind of sad, because are tons of people that go there thinking that God (and Mary) will bless them, but it is so dead.

Me at the beach.

Me and Hannah at the beach.  Awww...

Another beach picture.

Soccer.  With the World Cup going on, soccer was a main passtime.  We had fun watching the Portugal games there.  After Portugal won each time, everyone would go nuts.  Honking, shouting, screaming, fireworks, you name it.  I wish I could be there when they win the world cup '

Meal time.  The food was really good.  The only seriously gross food I had to eat was these sardines.

Ok.  I was going to post some more pictures but alas, I have exceeded the limit.  Maybe next week I'll delete all of these and then post new ones.  There are some other good ones.  Sorry for all of you with dial up, this post may kill your computer.

Last word - World Cup.  Portugal will win.  GO PORTUGAL!!!!!!!!!!

Until next time, Lydia

Updates...

Ok people, here is an official update on my past week.

Well...  my first week back at work is over.  I'd forgotten how long the days are!!!  My kids are great for the most part.  I enjoy teaching them, but I am so dead tired at the end of the day.  I'm like a zombie.  And my skin is going to be permanently chlorinated.

Second, our Portugal "Coffee House Extravaganza" turned out well.  We made over $1,000.  Lots more than we were expecting.  Everyone performed well.

Third, we had our first meet tonight!  WHAHOO!!!  We beat Hunting Creek.  By a LOT.  Considering they entered from the first division and we entered from the 3rd that is pretty good.  I ended up swimming 5 events.  I was a little nervous because I was going through a stage of thinking that I was getting slower and that I'd hit my peak and was in a slump. AND I had to swim backstroke!  But...  as it turns out I came out with 5 ribbons, 3 blue and 2 red.

I gotta go.  it is late.  I am a chlorine infested zombie.

Love, Lydia
