Shannon
Marcello is back! This time I was able to interview her a little about her art
and styles.
Yeah, I've got lots of
favorite mediums; my best being pencil/colored pencil (the classic one, right
^_^?), then Photoshop, and then watercolor. The coloring on most of my Lexx pics
(with the exception I think, of that one with Vlad wanting to keep that vicious
animal) is computer colored, mostly because computer coloring takes up less
time, but I can try just about anything once. If you want specifics on my
pieces, tell me which ones, and I'll tell you what I did with them.
I
don't consider myself a cartoonist so much as a graphic novel writer/artist. I
haven't put many of my comics up on DA (with the exception of that Hellraiser
one), but that's subject to change very soon. I might just do a few Lexx short
comics, since the ongoing fanfic I've been doing on fanfiction.net (yeah, the
one about Kai and Vlad being brought back to life) seems to be on hiatus at the
moment. In the meantime, I'd love to see a Lexx anime, too. I always felt it had
a sort of live-action anime feel (especially with all the funky-cool hairstyles)
^_^.

Halloween
Our
less-than-lucky Lexx crew seems to have landed on the wrong planet again (bonus
points if you can figure out where; it's always been a big inspiration for me!).
Lovely Xev is dressed as the Corpse Bride, while Stan just has a pumpkin stuck
on his head either because he pissed Vlad off (she was originally supposed to be
in this pic, but I couldn't figure out where to put her, plus it's always
Halloween in that little brain of hers) or he just fell down. Kai's less than
original Halloween costume speaks for itself, and no, you're supposed to decide
whether he's apprehensive about Xev clinging to him in a wedding dress or just
wondering whether or not he should help Stan.
Yup, I'm lazy; I intended
to color this but didn't.
 
K-Town-ish Kai
Ecchii!!!! What? You thought I drew hentai? Uh-uh, no. This is as naked
as any character gets, got it? Good. Now go drool. Regan, I hope you like this
^_^. As for the drawing, I may move it into my scraps, but right now my judgment
is impaired until further notice (gotta love allergy meds that aren't
non-drowsy).
Obligation Pic
Okay, I like the sketchiness of this pic, however I colored it while on
allergy meds...ugh...I'm not doing it again...promise!
Anyway, yeah,
since I am a Lexx fan (working on a doujinshi with my pal T.J., too), an anime
fan, and a hardcore Kai/Xev shipper, here they are, in the anime armlock (I
swear, I'm gonna kill you people if you don't recognize the pose or original
characters in the pose), so thank-you, goodnight, and next time I promise to do
a better shipper pic.
Kai's Reward
I
told you all I was a crazy fangirl. I know the dead do not sleep. I don't care.
Cuteness comes first. BTW, yes this is a crappy scrap that I colored, but y'know
I really don't care about that either; I do art that makes me happy ^_^.
Dark Kai
PLEASE FULL VIEW!!! Here's my rendition of Dark Kai (this is the last
Fanfiction pic, next Lexx pics you'll see will be more centered around S4 and
the Vlad events), or rather the crazy version of Kai that appears in the S2
episode Wake the Dead. Yup, he's comming back, and this time he's going all Jack
Torrence on a hospital! Only this time, he's not ranting out of his mind and
he's not hunting down teenagers because he was ordered to. He's just a
reflection of all the negative emotion Kai's been bottling up...obviously Xev,
Stan, and the very eager-to-fight Vlad are in trouble. Not even Prince is safe,
believe me ^_-!
Why he's not in his Divine Assassin's uniform: It's too
tiresome to draw sometimes, plus it wouldn't reflect bloodstains as
well!
The words are either bits of his dialogue or words that describe
what he's composed of, as this is what Kai truly is when his mental programming
surfaces. Sorry about the cheapness of the background; a good one was too hard
to form on just Photoshop.
Xev
Gift art for my friend T.J. He's a Xev drooler, so here she is with super
big anime eyes and looking cute and innocent (believe me, she isn't!). Lexxians,
think whatever you wanna think about her wearing a black shirt; I just thought
it would look cute ^_^. Hope T.J. likes her!
Curious Incident of a Totetsu
*no, this isn't in my Lexx fic, but it's an inside joke between me and my
friends. The furry creature known as Totetsu or T-Chan is from an anime/manga
called Petshop of Horrors. It's a nasty animal to rival the cluster
lizard.
Kai: You know I cannot allow you to keep it, Vlad.
Vlad: Why?
Kai: The answer to that is obvious.
Vlad:I do not bend to your will. It
despises you, the assassin....I adore it.
Kai:It is a danger to Stan and Xev.
And...it is a danger to you.
Xev: *shakes head* This coming from someone who
wanted to keep a baby cluster lizard...
Simplicity
Another snippet from my Lexx fanfic/manga, where Kai and Vlad have both
been returned to life, and are humans with a few extras (takes place after S4).
The caption should read:
Kai: The concept is simple. Take Vlad as an
example; she was entirely uninterested in her knife until I took it from her.
Now as she tries to kill me, she demonstrates that she has wants as the living
should. I however, do not.
Tried to color this manga-style (mangas are
only printed in black, grey, and white), but alas, foiled again! If I ever get
over being lazy, I may just colorize this completely, but of course...I am VERY
lazy.
When Chibis Attack
Yup! When Shannon gets sick, she gets cute attacks, and these frightening
little things are what she came up with.
This'll probably be the last
piece of fanart (it doesn't include Lexx, though!) for a while. I have original
works, too, but being the baka-saru that I am, I'm lazy and need to finish them
in photoshop. Feel free to smack me with any object within your reach, but I
promise you: I'll hurt ya....and make it look like an accident.
Vlad is Scary
Okay, I've anime-ized Lexx characters (and ironically, my favorite
character isn't even in this one!!! Oh well, something I must change!!!!). In
one of my Lexx fics, Vlad (yup, Vlad's a girl!!! Not her fault that she has a
guy's name! Maybe that's why she's so mean!) may have been made human, but that
doesn't she'll tolerate any lecherous advances from Captain Stan! Xev looks on,
knowing she should help Stan from the insane Vlad, but let's face it, it is
pretty funny.
As for you people who will flame me for no background, or
hatred of the drawing, or hatred for sci-fi in general, oh well!!! I like it!
That's all I care about!!!!!
Happy Valentine's Day
Trying to be a good sport about this crappy holiday, I was originally
gonna do something Hellraiser centric, but oh well, this is what popped up. Kai,
being the wet blanket that he is, has frustrated Xev to the point where she's
just gonna wing it. The piece of Pocky in his mouth is just to shut him up ^_^.
Obviously, the dead do not get Valentine's Day, either.

Shannon's art is always a pleasure to peruse, and I really appreciate that she let me feature some more of her Lexx art here. She's so versatile and fun! Looking forward to more!

| Lexx fans around the world share text, translating into other languages. Lexx originally aired in 160 countries, and since there isn't a lot in the way of merchandise or new information, fans look to each other for support. This latest batch of art comes from Russia, and although I can't read a lick of Russian, I am able to navigate through the pages a bit. I've got a translator helping me out with this one for her friend Lina.
Today I read your site LexxArt for the whole day. So many interesting! I, unfortunally, can't do something like this, but I have friends-lexxians, who can make dolls and carve on stone, too.

I actually had no trouble loading these pages, although it did take a few extra seconds. If you are on a slower computer, you might want to give it a little time.
Lina loves dragonflies, and I understand the affinity. I have some dragonfly earrings that I call my 'Lexx' earrings. I'm not sure about the first two dragonflies, whether they are metalwork and clay or not, but the three after that are carven stone. Hope to hear back on this.

And then there is yarn... These are awesome.
This one is Little Lexx from the very last show.
And here come more dolls-- yarn dolls! Yarn dolls are a big part of traditional toy history in cultures around the globe, and now Lexx is represented in yarn doll history.  I'm sure you know who these figures are, but in case visitors happen by, I'll put up the character names. I love these dolls, they are adorable and the detail is really good.

And finally, my first ever featured Lexx snow art by Lina...
You know, I think it would be awesome to see some more snow and ice Lexx art this winter. I love to see ice sculpting (BIG deal in China and other parts of the world during holidays and festivals), and I'd like to issue a challenge for some outdoor Lexx art to feature here in the future.
Or oragami, or cake art. Whatever is your style.
I really want to thank Lina for allowing me to feature her Lexx art here, and hopefully we can get a few comments from the artist translated within a few days.

Few Lexx fans are as enthusiastic as Kerri. The typical Lexx fan in withdrawal will write fan fiction. Kerri has taken it a step further with her own fully illustrated short stories and comic books, and multiple music inspired creations. She's got years of Lexx art under her belt, having started as a teenager while Lexx was still airing in the U.S., and I think you'll agree she's got talent for action scenes, moods, experimental styles and colors, and some very interesting ideas. She moved on to building web pages and you can find all her original artwork and stories displayed at Kerri's Lexx pages
Stan's Dream is a 16 page comic book, and I've got page 3 here for you to sample. I was impressed with the detail in the free hand drawing. Very few artists attempt free handing the inner skin of the Lexx or a cryopod, and little details show up very well, such as the cut of Xev's skirt, 790 is proportioned correctly, Kai's costume layers.
I chose a couple of short story covers to feature. You can see all the stories at Kerri's Lexx Stories
Lexx: A New Adventure
A taste of what would happen if the BrunnenG's built the Lexx. Also finding out what goes on between Kai and his secret life on Brunnis 2's final days.
Lexx: New Earth
Another Spin-off. Instead of Kai dying in the collider explosion, he safely enters and exits the asteroid and boards the new Lexx with Stan and Xev. Kai finally gets a turn as the captain and directs them to a new home. Their first planet being Earth 2. The destination of the Noah. Prince finds out about the new Lexx and boards it to kill the crew. Luckily, Xev ends up being the only survivor and holds Kai in her arms as he dies.
Kerri is so prolific in her single page music inspired art that I gave up trying to narrow it down to a small sampling. As many as I have here, it is actually still just a sampling, and I would like to highlight what I like about each of these. Kerri has moved some of these pieces to her artzone site, so if you have membership there you can leave comments.
Prince/Kai Reaching for the Stars
Prince was an evil character who wanted to widen his domain. He used trickery and manipulation, and in this instance used a form like Kai. This piece shows in simplest form Prince's desire to rule ALL.
So many of Kerri's pieces are playful, and I really enjoy all the different ways she comes up with to exhibit Lexx moods.

So poignant, this was the outfit Lyekka was wearing when she died saving Stan from Mantrid in season two.

The Lexx and the Earth
I've never seen anyone even attempt a free hand Lexx of this magnitude without it being a model drawn to scale. I found this pretty impressive, right down to that structural line running through the occular parabolae.
Alive Kai with a Brace
I think this is my favorite piece. It reminds me of the ribbon dancing that gymnasts do. It's such a joyful interpretation of Kai.
Two Xevs are Better Than One
While other fans bicker about change in a series, Kerri embraces it. You could almost see this as Xev reconciling her past self with her present self, as well, growth over time.

I actually find this piece relaxing.
Lexx Crew in Utopia
I like brick work... I can't help but see this rendered in computer art in my mind. I think the mood and feel could easily translate over.
Xev Riding a Cluster Lizard
I am reluctantly going to stop at this one. I find Kerri's perspectives to be so refreshing that I feel inspired to new ideas myself. Kerri definitely steps outside the box and doesn't confine herself to average standards. Anything is possible in her world view, and I sincerely hope her scope widens to include other art forums in the future.
I asked Kerri a couple of questions--
On average, about how much free time goes into one of your short stories, including the drawings? Have you ever spent this much time on any other tv show? I spend all my free time on my Lexx short stories and drawings. I have never spent this much time on any other show.
Lexx obviously stimulates creativity in you-- have you ever thought about taking the next step and pursuing illustrative art professionally? That would be nice. If there was a way to do it.
Some Lexx fans focus on one or two characters, but I have noticed they all show up in your artwork, including 790 and the Lexx himself. When did you first start drawing Lexx related art? Since I saw the show air back in the summer of 2002.
You express many styles and moods in your pictures-- what would you say inspires you most about Lexx? I don't know really. I guess I have to have a certain muse.
You seem to move easily from pencil drawings to colored pictures. Do you have a preference on the sort of artwork that you do? I can do pencil work, colored pics and comic strips.
This creativity that Lexx inspires in you also extends to creating multiple webpages, wallpapers, banners, and avatars. Do you see the skills you are learning having an impact on a future career, possibly? What else are you hoping to learn in the future? That's a tough question for me. When I created the sites, I wanted to make a dent in Lexx history. I want people in the future to see my sites and notice the hard work I put into it. I would also like to hear about it from one of the stars of Lexx.

Bellringer' Yeah, yeah, I know! She looks
a little Sailor Moon-ish in this pic, but hey, I had ta draw her. Without her,
Kai'd just let himself fade away (you know he loves her, even though he can't
really show it well). Besides, we all know who the real captain of the Lexx is,
and as much as I like Stan, it certainly isn't him ^_^!

I've watched so much Panyo Panyo DiGi Charat, I've chibi-fied Kai from Lexx and
Pinhead (from Hellraiser, mods...geez that one was tough). No, they're not
exactly Happy Smile Hello, are they? Oh well, I love them...even if Pinhead
looks like he wants to rip someone's head off...but oh wait...he does that
anyway.

Happy Ending'
For those of you who still
don't know, these characters are from Lexx (an awesomely crazy show on Sci-Fi)
My friend had Avril Lavigne's 'My Happy Ending' on repeat, and even though I'm
not a big Avril fan, it got me thinking that Xev never really did get her happy
ending. So I drew Kai and Xev. If anyone can think of a background for this,
pleeeeese gimme suggestions ^_^. Done in Photoshop airbrush.

Yeah, I know I'm bad. First
of all, I promised that I'd stop drawing Lexx art for a while, and if I did,
it'd be manly Stanley instead, but after seeing the Vlad episodes again, I
couldn't help but draw her! She's probably my favorite villain next to Prince,
and the poor girl only lasted like three episodes! There are a few errors with
her outfit and weapon, but since there are no decent images of her, this is the
best I could do! For those who don't know much about Lexx, Vlad is the
pain-in-Kai's-butt villain for some of Season 4, and she's just as dead as he
is, but as the saying goes, everything he can do, she does better.

yeah, I'm a Lexx fan. I'll get around to drawing Xev and Stan too (and possibly
some kissy pics with either Kai/Xev or Stan/Lyekka, I'll let you people decide
^_^) As for the stuff behind him, it's some veiny scary stuff somewhere. I guess
he just jumped down a hole and landed in a less than desirable place

Was I bored?
Yes. Does this background suck? Yes. Do I like the general subject? Sadly, yes.
Xev and Kai from Lexx again (I promise there'll be some different stuff after
this; just needed to get this out of my system!) To be honest, no, I don't think
she's actually sleeping in that tree, who could anyway? I just think she's
pretending because it's the only way she's bound to get any real attention from
Kai, whose deadness gets in the way of their relationship.

| Ok, I've found the holy grail of Lexx art--
Jerry Emerson has been in the cartooning business for 30 years and commissions everything from gag cartoons for national print and web based media to personalized caricature mugs and t-shirts. You can even have him create a character template for your website!!! Wow, I'm seriously thinking of that one... You can find Jerry's work at his Art of Caricature site.
Permission was given to me by Jerry to feature his copyright protected caricature of the Lexx crew. I asked him if he would consider doing caricatures of other Lexx characters--
I would definitely consider doing caricatures of the other characters from Lexx.
If there is a market for caricatured desktops, I would certainly make more of
these as well.
Don't know about you all, but this brought back a stab of nostalgia. Wouldn't you just love to see an entire strip done Mad Magazine style?
