  • Do we really need political parties?

I seem to recall our nation's first president, George Washington, telling us NOT to form political parties because it would cause divisiveness in the country. But what do we do? Form freaking political parties. I'm an independent myself and don't really care for any of the political parties. I'm only voting Obama because I agree with most of his policies and he's one of the more honest and genuine candidates I've seen. I don't think its fair to Americans to have two dominant political parties because it monopolizes the government to only those two. A lot of people (including myself) have liberal and conservative values. I believe we should get out of Iraq with the proper steps and move our troops to Afghanistan and shift our focus to domestic issues. However, I'm also decidedly a born again, Holy Spirit filled Christian, pro-life, and against gay marraiges. Why can't people just run as THEMSELVES instead of representing a political party? I don't like having to choose sides when I have views from both sides. It also creates strife in Congress because Democrats and Republicans are always fighting each other instead of getting things done, insisting that their side is always right. One thing that bothered me about Hillary Clinton was that she was always saying that we need a Democrat in the White House and she can fight the Republicans. Well, why do we have to have only a Democratic agenda? If you're always fighting the Republicans, do you honestly think they would wanna work with you if you became President? I applauded Obama for at least admitting that Democrats don't have a monopoly on good ideas. Even John McCain is known for going against his party. Now I do believe in looking at things from the other point of view. I do understand that if everyone had their own beliefs that conflicted with everyone else's then it would cause confusion and if political beliefs and ideals were concentrated into one party then it would be easier to consolidate decisions. Still, I honestly think political parties should be effectively disbanded so the government would'nt be so monopolized and corrupt by partisan politics. That probably will never happen though so whatever...

  • Job Search Frustration

    Mood:

I've been applying for jobs since I got back to ATL and I....Am...DONE!! I've applied to 10 jobs and I am not applying to any more..lol. What I'm really hoping for honestly is to get enough financial aid to cover my tuition and living expenses so I wouldnt have to worry about a job in the first place. Being a grad student is gonna be hard enough and having a job would make it a little more harder. So far I have applied to:

    Circuit City
    Best Buy
    Radio Shack
    Foot Locker
    Champs
    Sprint
    Walmart
    Lowes
    Blockbuster
    GameStop

Hopefully I hear from somebody and if I don't then I'm still trusting God will supply all of my financial needs. I mean He's supplied them every time I needed it so why now right? Right!

This may be my last xanga post. I've had this since February 2004!!! I was a freshman in college and now I'm going to be a grad student!! Its time to close this chapter of my life and start fresh. I've learned a lot through my undergraduate experiences. I might write one more before I go to A&T but for now....farewell

    Peace up, A-town down

  • Another Political Rant and Questions

    1. According to Senator Hillary Clinton, she is in the lead in popular IF you include Michigan/Florida and exclude caucus states. How can you cry "disenfranchisement" of Michigan/Florida (even though you said in October that they didn't count) but want to exclude the caucus states which effectively disenfranchises THE CAUCUS STATES? Isn't that called hypocrisy?

    2. Senator Clinton and the media seem to have made up this narrative that Obama has trouble with "working class, low income, no college degree white people" just because he lost Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. I guess ALLLLLLL the other white people (and blacks) who voted for Obama were all elite, PhD having, Ivy League educated, high income people. Why is it that only the whites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and WV can't vote for Obama? Why is it that they are somehow the "standard" for all working class whites?

    3. Going back to Michigan and Florida. I'm all for people's votes counting but why is there such a big fuss over their votes? The Democratic Party of both states BROKE THE RULES and moved up their primary thus being stripped of their delegates. That's THEIR fault, not anybody elses. They f'ed it up for themselves but we're all (mainly Hillary) trying to find a way to seat their delegates. Whats the point of having rules when they're just going to be overturn? I don't understand how Barack is being made the bad guy about not counting the votes when he AND John Edwards followed the rules and didn't campaign there.

    4. They say that the caucuses are un-democratic. Why? In a caucus, you can't lie about who you vote for. You can't tell someone you'll vote for Candidate A but at the polls, vote for Candidate B. However, you CAN lie at a primary. So wouldn't caucuses actually be MORE democratic? Hillary lost most of the caucuses because she wasn't as organized as Obama. Whose fault is that? Don't write off and disenfranchise the caucus goers just because your organization skills suck.

    5. Why is it that everytime Obama wins a state, the MSM always attributes it to a high African American turnout? While it may be true that it was a high AA turnout, clearly the majority of people in every state is white. It's like their deliberately trying to infer that black people are only voting for Obama because he's black (well, technically bi-racial).

    6. Last one, Hillary's campaign are trying to make the argument that they can win the "big" states even going so far as to use Electoral College delegates. However, she won the big states in a DEMOCRATIC primary, not a general election which means that its only democrats (or Operation Chaos Republicans) voting. So how does winning big states mean that you'll automatically win them in the general election when clearly, the Democrat that won Texas in the last 8 primary elections LOST them in the general election?

This was moreso a rant than questions.... But feel free to answer if you want.

    Peace up, A-town down

P.S. Have anyone noticed that at Hillary rallies they often chant "Yes SHE can" or "Hill-ar-y" but at Obama rallies they always chant "Yes WE Can"?

  • The End of a Season...

    Mood:

After 5 long years, David Mack Long Matthews is officially an ALUMNUS of Tennessee State University!!!! GOD IS GOOD!!!! I graduated on May 3, 2008 at 2pm with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. I'm also on the Dean's List (finally)..lol. I was filling out two job applications yesterday and it felt kinda weird to put that I have a Bachelor's Degree. I'm currently still at TSU because I'm taking this week long, 5 hour class called the Java Boot Camp which basically prepares me to get my certification in the Java programming language.

So David, what are you going to do now that you've graduated?

Well, I plan on getting a job in ATL (preferably at Best Buy or Circuit City) and then when I move to Greensboro for graduate school (North Carolina A&T if you forgot), I can just transfer to a store thats in Greensboro and that way I wouldn't have to worry about finding a job. I'm still in the process of getting an apartment and scholarships (cuz I'm not paying for grad school or taking out any loans if I can help it).

Ok David, so you plan on getting a job, apartment, and scholarships. What else is new?

Hmmmm.....well, I'll be switching cellphone carriers from AT&T to Sprint. Yes, I know...Sprint has horrible customer service. Well, I don't usually have to deal with them because I pay my bills early (to be early is to be on time...). After doing a lengthy search for the best plan, I settled on Sprint mainly because one of my sorors showed me the SERO (Sprint Exclusive Referral Offer) plan which are totally different plans from the ones listed on the website or kiosks. The SERO plans are through referrals from Sprint employees. Under a SERO plan, I would get 500 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7pm, unlimited text, data, email, and web.......all for $30!!! I was like, you can't beat that huh..lol. Also, I wanna get the Samsung Instinct in June which is basically Sprint's answer to the iPhone. I was gonna switch carriers this week because my contract with AT&T ended on sunday but my phone would be mailed to the billing address of my debit card which is my home in ATL so I just decided to wait until I get back to ATL.

David, you said you were on the Dean's List. What grades did you get?

I'm glad you asked that question. My final grades are as follows:

    Senior Project II - B
    Wind Ensemble - A
    Operating Systems - A
    Event Driven Programming - A
Fund. of Problem Solving - B
    American Literature II - B
Intro. to Web Development - A
    Technical Writing - A

    Semester GPA - 3.7
    Cumulative GPA - 3.1

Thats all for now...I may stop writing in here once I start graduate school but who knows

    Peace up, A-town down

    P.S. YES WE CAN!!!

  • David's Cellphone Dilemma

Ok, I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. I'm currently with AT&T and I have a Motorola SLVR L2 (with iTunes). My plan (450 anytime/5000 nights and weekends with unlimited text) expires on May 4th and I'm trying to figure out what to do. Here are the choices I've been considering:

    AT&T
    1. iPhone
I could get the iPhone and call it a day but I don't like the fact that its missing a lot of simple features such as MMS. Video recording. Custom ringtones. Mass storage. Fully functioning Bluetooth with stereo audio streaming. Voice dialing when you're using a car kit. Sending contact info to other people. Instant friggin' messenging. Sending an SMS to more than one recipient at a time
Plan: 450 anytime/5000 nights and weekends, unlimited data/email/web, 200 text messages
    Cost: $60//month

    2. AT&T Tilt
I could get the Tilt and add the PDA Personal plan with 200 text messages. I personally like the Tilt especially with the 3G network and is a very capable smartphone
    Plan: same as iPhone
    Cost: $75/month

    T-Mobile

    1. T-Mobile Wing
The Wing is basically a slightly inferior Tilt because it doesnt have 3G and the Tilt has a faster processor and memory.
Plan: 1000 Anytime/Unlimited Nights and Weekends, unlimited data, 1000 text messages
    Cost: $76/month

    Sprint
    1. Touch or Mogul and later Instinct (June 2008)
I like the Touch a whole lot but it doesnt have Wi-Fi... <IMG src="http://forum.the5thquarter.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif"> . The Instinct comes out in June and its basically a Sprint version of the iPhone but actually does some things better than the iPhone and has GPS built in. I'm reaaaaally starting to like the Instinct though.
    Plan: 450 Anytime/Unlimited everything else
    Cost: $70 (without taxes)

I would just go ahead and get Sprint but I've heard some variable things about the network. As you can see, I'm really trying to think this out before I sign any contracts... . Any help would be appreciated!
    -----------------------------------------------

In other news......I'M GRADUATING ON SATURDAY!!!! WOOOHOOOOO!!!!! 5 long years of undergrad finally over!!!
