A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
I very rarely read. I had heard about this book from a friend. It was on sale at the front counter. It's the first purchase I've ever made at Starbucks. It's the first purchase I've ever made that changed my perception of the things around me, myself, life, and how to raise my son. While waiting for Dave, a friend from Dallas, to finish his shift at Starbucks I started to read. The book is about the author's, Ishmael Beah, life in Sierra Leone. He was a boy soldier for their army. He committed acts of violence that most American children only witness in movies. He's only a few months younger than I am. His story is life altering. I am so thankful for the life I have in this country. I will warn those that are willing to pick it up: It's an emotional and uncensored account of the things he expeirenced. I don't know what to say about it really. I will never look at life the same way again and feel ashamed for those things I have taken for granted. Those that really know me will understand the depth of what I'm saying as I'm not usually moved to such things. I really hope you take the time to read this book.
