I hate trimming hedges. I wish we could have a lawn care business without doing hedges, but people expect it, so we have to deliver. For a long time I have put off buying a really good, commercial grade hedge trimmer, because it's like an admission that I'm going to be trimming more hedges....that and the fact that they cost $300.

So last Monday I finally broke down and a gas-powered Echo hedge trimmer. Tuesday I was doing my very FIRST job with them and the very sharp blades brushed up to my jeans. I hardly felt anything, but made a mental note to be careful, because I could have hurt myself if I bumped into my leg.

Then I noticed my new work jeans were cut at the knee. Then I noticed a twinge of pain. Then I noticed the blood. Lots of it. By the time I got my pant leg pulled up I had a stream of blood running down my leg and into my sock. "Great," I thought. I went to get a bandage and then realized just how deep the cut was. So, pulling a trailer, I had to drive the truck back to my parents house, shifting with my right hand, holding the gash closed with my left and steering with....Um, my chin? I'm still not sure how I did that. lol

To make along story short, a couple of hours later I had nine stitches in my knee. *sigh* Did I mention I really hate trimming hedges?

At the dr's office I was sitting up watching the doctor start the second stitch when I started feeling bad. Not sure why, but I started getting really hot. I wanted to keep watching, but I figured I better sit back....and then.....

Passed out

Yep, I looked kinda like that. lol....I woke up to calls of "JC, are you with us?" It was pretty funny. Jennifer was kind enough to drive me up there and she just about had a heart attack when I passed out. She started crying. Poor thing.

But there some good news. I went to a local medical center and they gave me a tetanus shot, stitches, unlimited follow up visits and removal of the stitches (that will happen Friday) for only $177. Thank the Lord for that!

That night I went to visit my friend, OL, who is in the hospital and his plight quickly made me stop thinking about my knee. He was hit by a drunk driver (whose passenger died) last weekend and he's in bad shape. He had a broken ankle, broken foot, broken arm in three places, broken collar bone, a couple of broken ribs and he's going to have to have a hip replacement, too...That's just what I can remember. Amazingly there were NO internal injuries! If you guys think about it, please be in prayer for OL, because he is in a lot of pain...

Sorry I don't have to cover more about all the crazy things going on around here lately. I have finals tomorrow at school, so you can be praying for me!

Sorry about your knee.  As i kept reading, i was thinking of how brave you were to be able to watch as the doctor was sewing it up.  (Why is that so brave?  i usually turn white at the sight of a needle and can't walk without feeling faint and dizzy).  As i kept reading, i started laughing so hard i had tears in my eyes.  Great to know i'm not the only one that can feel that way without knowing why it happens...

i'll try to remember to pray for OL.

Take care,
~§tacy

Oh, I love that quote by Woodrow Kroll!

Maybe deep down inside you knew how very dangerous the hedge trimmer was to you and that is why you prolonged buying a really sharp one. ;) I am always afraid that in a mindless moment I am going to try and 'steady' the hedge trimmers with my free hand. That's scary.

And...the other day...I was trying to take the metal things off the hand mixer and didn't realize it was still plugged in, and didn't realize either that what I thought was the release button was actually the 'on' button. Ow. It's a dangerous world we live in!

RE: your friend. My parents were in a head on collision with a drunk driver and my dad came out pretty bad, so I empathize entirely. My prayers are for your friend.

Wow! Sorry to hear about your knee! I am sure I would have passed out too! :) Sorry about your friend too. I prayed for your knee and for your friend. May He give you both a speedy recovery!

Hey! Maybe we should start a brotherhood of passing out in the Dr. office or something... I know how it is. You're blessed, I know of a guy who cut off three fingers with a hedge trimmer. Ugh... Guess that's all part of life in the techno-industrial age.

I've always hated 'weed wackers'... I was always afraid I'd accidentally 'wack' off something important. :)

I know this sounds terrible... And the blood doesn't sound pretty... But I almost laughed as I read your post! I think it will make a great story to tell your kids someday... One of those legends that parents are so good at telling. (Kinda like the of Uncle Willie Q pretended he'd fallen down the stairs and broken his neck -- His mom fainted right then and there... Or the time my mom gashed her wrist as she crashed through a door chasing her brother).

Hope your leg heals well...

LOL...I just reread my comment that my prayers are for your friend. I didn't mean JUST for your friend and not you. I'm glad you didn't cut your leg off...and I will pray for future safety. ;)

Hmmmm I've always wondered what it would be like to pass out!

But that sounds like a nasty cut.

I'll be praying for your friend OL!

I loved that quote from Ryan in your last post. I don't know the date I was saved. I don't even know the year. I can remember saying a "prayer" once when I was like six, but I am pretty positive that I was genuinely saved at that time. I am not sure I could nail down when exactly I was saved, but when I look back, I have confidence in my salvation based on everything that has happened and the way God has worked in my life over the past number of years.

Hope finals went well and that you are making a full recovery. You've got to work on that passing out thing. The reputation of guys everywhere is on the line. lol.

Hey JC, my hedges need trimming, can you come to Memphis and trim them? Man dude, sorry about that. I HATE using that kind of stuff. You DEFINITELY have to have some respect for lawn equipment these days. Hope you're better now. I'll bet your loss of blood caused the passing out. So glad it wasn't worse, cuz it could've been MUCH worse! Take care Bro!

Aww!!  The exact same thing happened to MY brother a few years ago when he was trimming hedges.  And he wasn't a novice!  So it happens to the best of 'em.  Ech, he didn't get medical attention right away, and finished the work day (sometimes it's okay to quit work...), and I'm pretty sure he still has a scar.  I'm glad you survived this accident!!

I would have passed out WAY before the second stitch. I'm a gigantic baby, and I get incredibly worked up when it comes to things like that. It's a long story, but I once passed out due to allergies. I know, doesn't even make sense... like I said, it's a long story. :)

Anyway, that's very sad about your friend OL. Makes my injured foot seem completely insignificant in comparison. I'll definitely keep him in my prayers.
