Posted by Alice

I wanted to let you know that Lola died of an apparent heart attack last night at age 87. She was at home -- I was there because she wasn't feeling well, but she did not want to go to the hospital. I let her make the decision. In her mind was always the fear that if she went to the hospital that they would not let her come home and she would have to go to a nursing home.

When the doctor suggested a pace maker less than a month ago, Mom told him absolutely no... that she was "ready to go." She was feeling better after I was there for a few minutes and we spent over an hour talking -- even laughing. She wanted me to show her how to do something on the computer, so we did that -- and I even gave her a hair trim at her request. She decided to get ready for bed and I said I'd stay until she was settled in for the night. After she had her sleep shirt on, she simply fell unconscious. I called 911 but they were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead at the hospital a few minutes later.

Chris and I  are very tired tonight, but we are doing fine, so don't be concerned about us. She flew back from San Antonio this morning and we spent the afternoon settling details. Tomorrow there will be more to do. The funeral will be Saturday morning. We would have preferred to have the service Monday, but Memorial Day put a kink in the timing.

Bougainvillea

Is my face red?!This as I'm sure many of you know is a Bougenvillea. What I have been nursing along for at least a couple of years, thinking it was a bougenvilla is not!!! Since I had never seen one I identified it from a garden book. So much for "book learnin".. My plant turns out to be a Sun plant. It has branches like the B. but when it flowers , the tips of each branch turn a vivid pink.It almost died this spring, so I pruned it back and took it outside where it is growing again, so I hope to see the flowering again. The tree trunk is the oak that I see from my window , and dearly love.. Have a discovery week.  GOD BLESS.

Thyme Changes

HerbGarden32

I used to have a backdoor herb garden. Obviously, since my apartment is on the second floor, I don't have a backdoor here. So this is the answer: a container herb garden on the patio off the library. I have rosemary, thyme, basil, parsley, sage, and oregano. I like to cook with fresh herbs, and I have used some of these. Whenever I need some, I just go down and snip snip. I have invited others to use them, and I think maybe one person has. Chris gave me the pot and Alice planted it. Growing things does something for my soul.

God bless...

Peony207  Sky204  DutchIris210 The  Dutch Iris to my left was of particular interest to me, because I am so fascinated with the yellow markings on the petals. Hence the pic.

The peony above it is from Chris' garden. She brought it to me, because she remembers growing up with peonies in our backyard. We all have loving memories of the white ones especially, although we had red ones and pink ones also.
I won at scrabble again today, it's about time!!
I have been reading a small book by C. P. Estes,The Faithful Gardener. She terms it a wise tale whjch can never die.
She ends it with this prayer , which I would like to share with you:
  Refuse to fall down.
If you refuse to fall down,
 refuse to stay down,
 lift your heart toward heaven,
 and like a hungry beggar,
 ask that it be filled..
 and it will be filled.
 You may be pushed down.
You may be kept from rising.
But no one can keep you
 from lifting your heart
 toward heaven____
 only you.
It is in the middle of misery
 that so much becomes clear.
The one who says nothing good
 came of this,
 is not yet listening.

It spoke to me so clearly, I just had to tell someone. Have a lovely week. GOD BLESS
