The Painted Desert: PART XIX

Just try to imagine you are trying to make headway on your horse drawn cart and this ladscape looms up ahead of you. The slopes in the Badlands are steep and extremely slippery. In the dry you would not find water for miles and in the wet (after a shower in the area) you would get bogged down and not go anywhere. But this did not deter the pioneers who had no option but to either move on, or perish.

Good Day Maarten..........

Magical once again........Spreading my arms wide and spinning........ Raven hair whiping with each turn of the dance............Feeling the peace and magic of the earth............

Thanks for taking me there............

Hugs Gypsy

When I was in Utah we had friends that rewalked the trail that the pioneers came. They took a month... but if they had done the whole trail I am sure it would have taken longer and been harder.

I can't even imagine! Did you go up to The Narrows? I never did get there... but I want to... it is on my list for the next time wqe get to UT. Hopefully I will have a camera to do it justice by then. lol

Hmmm I think if I have to pick a favorite... I would choose... 1... wait! 7... and 4... Hey! I can have more then one favorite! lol

Those pioneers had amazing fortitude, that is for sure. And a perseverance that is beyond most people's grasp. I think I'd have been greatly discouraged.

I am glad that stephanie sent me this way.  I have been to the Badlands of South Dakota and I can remember thinking the same thing that you wrote above.  I got to see them also at a little before sunset and the colors just jumped out and grabbed me somewhere around the vicinity of the heart.  You did a beautiful job with these pictures . . . breathtaking.  I also love the music.  Enya is one of my favorites.  I think I have all of works.  Thanks for sharing your pictures.

I have not heard of The Narrows yet Angi, but I will look it up as soon as I finish here. Well I hope you get the opportunity to take many photos. I know they will be good because you have a keen eye for composition. You will notice that many of mine are similar in subject matter and it is because I like them both.

Hi Cindy, Nice to meet you. Thank you for stopping by and also for the kind words. I wish I had more opportunity early and late in the day but you know what it is like when traveling. You get to a good spot near midday and you have to just take your photos and move on.

Re: pioneers... i would have folded like a wet newspaper! Thank god our ancestors were made of sterner stuff!

I wonder... did they really get to appreciate the vast beauty of the land they were passing through, or was the terrain just another obstacle in the path to their 'promised land'? You would hope they could drink in the awsomeness, but that trip had to be SO harsh!

@grandmakitty -

They probably saw the beauty of the land and recognized it as such but I think reality struck hard in the same fashion as when you would encounter a Lion in the wild. It's beauty does not count for much if you have to survive. The term Badlands was coined by the pioneers in America. It is universally recognized all over the world.

I love the shadows and colors in the first one, but #4, #5, #11 (and a few others) also intrigues me for that blue mountain in the far background.
