My parents told me that I should try and limit the miles put on my car... so I decided to take the train to work. In total the trip took an hour and forty minutes, plus twenty minutes to walk from Lake to Caltech.

I am tired.

Also, I am convinced that America has its public-transportation-head on backwards.

My Japanese Family

My uncle (my dad's brother) takes care of my obaa-chan. He's been living with her since the death of my ojii-chan. Obaa-chan had a stroke a couple of years back, and things have been really on-edge since then. It's obvious that my dad, my uncle, and obaa-chan are all really scared.

A little more background on my dad's side of the family: they're almost all doctors. My obaa-chan was an anesthesiologist at Tokyo Daigaku during World War II. My uncle and dad are both dentists.

Growing up, there was a lot of pressure from both my dad and his family to go into the medical field. The same went with my brother. Long story short, I chose mathematics and had to go to CSUN ("attending a UC isn't worth the money if you aren't going to become a doctor") and my brother chose Biology and is attending UC Irvine.

My uncle and obaa-chan just dropped by about 10 minutes ago. My parents warned me yesterday that "they will be bringing you a card," so I, "better be up and out of bed." Why the warning? My uncle never married and made a lot of money in the stock market. He's a millionaire. If he's "bringing me a card" that means he's probably going to be giving me a lot of money, which means my parents feel really bad.

So yeah, they dropped by 10 minutes ago, I finished up an e-mail I was typing, went to brush my teeth, went downstairs, and they had already left. My dad was pissed at me and told me that I "should go drive over and visit them today" by myself. By myself? (That would totally not work. They don't really know how to talk with me I think, so I usually take my brother to make things happy).

So I said that I should take Karl with me, and to this my dad said, "He has to study! His classes are hard!"

There we go again, comparing. I'm sick of this competition crap between my brother and me. It's just not fair.

Crazy Math Week

Last week was insane.

Monday: Professor Foster's end of the school-year math party.

Tuesday: Honors Convocation. My ENTIRE NAME was slaughtered.

Wednesday: College of Science and Mathematics graduation ceremony. It was amazing. I am totally buying a doctoral robe when I finish my Ph.D. I made the Physics students laugh when I screamed, "I love Calculus!" after Noronha had the math people stand up to show who the math majors were.

Thursday: I think I was in some state of bliss/euphoria???

Friday: I don't remember because I passed out.

So yeah, I am really happy. I am really, really, really, really happy. I have two B.S. degrees. I can't believe it.

And now... I have to order the texts I will be using in the fall. Four months till the quarter starts... that's a lot of study time. I think I'll begin with memorizing the proof of the Central Limit Theorem.

Caltech will be my new hangout this summer. I can't study at home, so I'll just drive down there to work/study all day.
