A True Confession
It was one thing when I admitted to you that I am a Trekkie. But this confession is much, much more embarrassing. Dare I reveal the truth? I am also a Whovian.
Many years ago, my Esteemed Spouse and I were destitute newlyweds. We had moved to Stone Mountain, Georgia, at the urging of my in-laws and were renting their house from them (they were in Germany). My sister-in-law had left us her little 13-inch black and white TV. Every afternoon we would watch Star Trek (this is how I got started with that too). And every Saturday night, I would make Jell-o snacks and we would watch Dr. Who on public TV.
Yes, we knew it was hokey and melodramatic. Yes, the special effects were rudimentary at best. But it cracked us up, and we kept watching. It was the only kind of date we could afford.
We kept watching it when we moved back to Texas. But then the station here stopped carrying it and by then we were in a completely different stage of our lives anyway. And of course, then the series was canceled.
I knew, of course, that they were making a new Who series. But we couldn’t get it and I wasn’t terribly interested because of the whole Battlestar Galactica thing (I liked the old series; just the commercials for the new series infuriated me).
Well, lately Flynn has been going over to his friend JB’s house to watch the new Dr. Who. And the other day he borrowed the whole first season of the new series and brought it home. I was willing to watch one episode on the strength of the fact that Flynn liked it.
And I was very pleasantly surprised. The new series is every bit at silly as the old one. It follows the same formula. It takes itself so seriously. It’s just as melodramatic. The special effects are, admittedly better but I find I don’t object. We’ve seen three episodes now. That’s all I needed. Another guilty pleasure to keep me from writing.
Speaking of guilty pleasures, Lina and I finally made it to the Realm of Perpetual Bliss and Serenity today. July is one of their two sale months, when everything in the store is 20% off. I was not looking for yarn this time, and I had to work very hard at not finding any. After looking through stacks of books, however, I did eventually find two that will help me greatly in deciding what to do with all the yarn I’ve already got!
The only thing that marred our yarn store experience was the fact that it was crowded. We are accustomed to having the store, and the sisters, to ourselves. It was rather trying to have to share it with a bunch of loud customers who kept the sisters hopping to find everything they wanted. In other words, the experience fell rather short in the serenity department.
I have started knitting on Smoke again, after hauling it all the way to Colorado and then not knitting a single stitch on it while I was there. I think I will adopt Lina’s strategy for the rest of the summer. I’ll work on Smoke this week, the ballband afghan next week, and Mulberry the week after. I’ll just keep rotating like that till something gets finished. Sooner or later, something is bound to get finished, right?

We really liked Tom Baker too. And for a while there, lots of people had those really long scarves!I've been trying to catch up on your blog after a sort of low-blogging week...
I've never seen Star Trek or Dr. Who, but what you're saying reminds me of my family sitting around watching Monk. It's a tv show I can actually stand and enjoy!
