Okay, so, I haven't posted in a while because, well, no one is on here anymore, but whatever.  Today, I bring you another typical matt-nash style post.  I need someone to notice how cool I am, so I post about the cool stuff I'm into.  You, the reader, then realize how cool the stuff I'm into is and how cool I am as well.  You should then get into said cool thing, so we can both be cool and talk about said cool thing and how cool we are.  So, I give you:  COOL THINGS OF AUGUST!  (this will also be appearing as a normal column in Modern Miss magazine, so...wow, I'm cool...)

COOL THING OF AUGUST #1

veronicamarsthecompleteseconds

Veronica Mars Second Season DVD (out Aug. 22)  If you don't know, Veronica Mars is (no spoliers):

The second season of Veronica Mars showcases the series' crackling-sharp writing and topnotch acting of star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast. Veronica still struggles with the class wars in sunny Neptune, Calif., trying to find a balance between high school, love, helping her dad as a private eye, and doing the right thing. The ongoing thread of season 2 is the aftermath of a horrifying tragedy, and as Veronica and dad Keith try to find out what caused it, mysteries only compound. Shifty Sheriff Lamb, town powerbrokers, and various high-school cliques seem to undermine Veronica at every turn. Thankfully, Veronica has more chutzpah than Phillip Marlowe, and the side-of-the-mouth one-liners to match: "Well, actually," Veronica says dryly to a bad guy, "despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out of someone." Some of the show's broad strokes echo the stellar Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yet Bell's Veronica doesn't need the supernatural to tackle a challenge. She's a real girl, conflicted, prickly, lovesick, yearning, sometimes even scared. As Veronica tries to solve the mystery, she must also handle her own heartbreaks, and the moral stumbles of those closest to her. Happily, she's got a great best pal, Wallace (the effervescent Percy Daggs III), and possibly the coolest, most understanding TV dad ever (Enrico Colantoni). The boxed set includes 22 episodes (many with deleted scenes), a behind-the-scenes mini-doc, a cute gag reel, and a short profile film, Veronica Mars: Not Your Average Teen Detective. You can say that again. --A.T. Hurley

COOL THING #2 and #3

Cooking Mama

Cooking Mama!  You cook and stuff using your DS stylus!  You screw up and mama yells at you!  Yeah!  And only $19.99 (Aug. {whoops, got delayed to 9/12})

Star Fox Command

New StarFox that is supposed to be in the vein of the original SNES game! (Aug. 28)

COOL THIINGS 4-6

Debut Album from Persephone's Bees!  Finally!  (Aug. 29)

Notes from the Underworld

60s Pychedelic Pop and Freakbeat made modern.  I've only heard 2 songs off this album, "Nice Day" and "City of Love", but they're both incredibley good amazing!  You can hear them on www.persephoneesbees.com .  Make sure to listen for Angelina starting her Vespa up at the end of "Nice Day".  A nice touch.

The Grates Debut Album!  (Aug. 29)

Gravity Won't Get You High

They came out with an E.P about a year ago that I liked alot.  I don't know what took so long to get an album out, but I'm happy it's finally coming.  Loud, innovative, agressive, punch-you-in-the-lung punk rock and lo-fi noise.  I love it.

LILY ALLEN!  "alright, still" Came out Aug 1.  Poppy, happy, rocksteady and reggae with her spitting lyrics over it in her adorable North London accent, though I kind of doubt that she's as urban or tough as she seems to think she is.  I don't own this yet, even with a supposed domestic release, it's tough to find.

Strange that all my cds for August are debuts...hmmm...and all are female fronted...I guess that's strange...I dunno.

See, how cool right?  Right.  One last note on stuff you should be into.  I've stayed away from "Cable and Deadpool" comics because while Deadpool is awesome and incredibly funny, I though Cable would get his suck all over it and it would in turn suck.  Not the case!  I picked up issue #30 and loved it and I'm going to find the tpbs for the earlier issues if they exist.  Just a tip.

thank you and if you managed to read all that I'm sure you don't have anything to comment, but 's cool cause I'm cool.

"I GOTTA MESSAGE FOR YOU AND IT'S URGENT! BA-BA-BA!" -The Grates

Okay, sorry, Scott Pilgrim again, BUT I'm bringing it up for a good reason.  The good reason is not that Scott Pilgrim has become my favorite work of fiction ever with the mass explodiness of the last volume, although it has (and I'm a product of the International Baccalaureate English Program), I just want to share the gist of the chorus of the song "Scott Pilgrim" by Plumtree, one of the inspirations for the book.  It goes simply:

"I've waited for a thousand years, a thousand years.  Can't wait to see you."

SPECIAL SATURDAY EDITION TO SAVE YOU MONEY: BRETT RATNER CRAPS ALL OVER X-MEN FRANCHISE!

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE IN MY NAME, BOY!!??  YOU USED HER AND YOU USED ME!!  I WOULD NEVER HAVE ALLOWED THIS!!!  YOU'VE DESTROYED EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE!!  AND YOU USED MY NAME TO DO IT!!"-Magneto addressing Quicksilver in House of M #7

This quote came to my mind as I watched X-Men 3 last night.  I mean, I knew there was no way it could possibly as good as X-2, so I was just hoping for a decent flick, but even with my very low expectations, I couldn't help but be sorely disappointed.  If it was just some random action movie, I would have walked out half way through, but I kept hoping something interesting would happen.  For about the first hour, I kept thinking, "it'll get better...it'll get better", but after an hour of the drudgery of watching the sloppy writing nd dialogue that reduced the once complex and layered characters of the first 2 films (except for Storm) into elementary grade cartoonish versions of themselves, I gave up all hope.  Especially as multiple plot points and characters are thrown into the mix, and neither the new characters or plot points are fleshed out and he does absolutely nothing with the new plot points, they just sit there to rot.  It's like Ratner just wanted "filler", between his disappointing action scenes, which are extremely low on drama because they're so poorly written that it seems that no one's in danger or are so melodramatic and cheesy that you're looking to gouge out your eyes and your ears.  All this sounds harsh, but these are characters, ideas, and stories that I've grown up with and loved for most of my life and yes, X-men books still command the vast majority of my comic book spending budget, and it seems a terrible affront to see these characters reduced to this, especially after X-2 was nigh-perfect in almost every way.  Batman Begins is now my favorite comic book movie, but X-2 is a very close second and I think I'll just pretend that X-Men 3 never happend, perhaps the Professor could remove it from my memory (well, not now, he lost his powers on M-Day.{My apoligies if any of you are reading X-Men Deadly Genesis} Whoops!) or the Scarlet Witch could alter reality for me and literally make sure this movie was never made.

I know some of you need to see it.  So, go ahead, I needed to see it to decide for myself after reading the mildly disapointing to downright terrible reviews, but make sure you stay til after the credits are completely over.  There's one last scene to make you cringe after the credits and that's the scariest part of all because they leave the story open for a fourth film, which is so scary a thought that I couldn't sleep last night

Bryan Singer! Superman Returns better be worth it,

This movie is almost as painful as having all the adamantium ripped from your body.
