COOL THING OF AUGUST #1

Veronica Mars Second Season DVD (out Aug. 22) If you don't know, Veronica Mars is (no spoliers):

The second season of Veronica Mars showcases the series' crackling-sharp writing and topnotch acting of star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast. Veronica still struggles with the class wars in sunny Neptune, Calif., trying to find a balance between high school, love, helping her dad as a private eye, and doing the right thing. The ongoing thread of season 2 is the aftermath of a horrifying tragedy, and as Veronica and dad Keith try to find out what caused it, mysteries only compound. Shifty Sheriff Lamb, town powerbrokers, and various high-school cliques seem to undermine Veronica at every turn. Thankfully, Veronica has more chutzpah than Phillip Marlowe, and the side-of-the-mouth one-liners to match: "Well, actually," Veronica says dryly to a bad guy, "despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out of someone." Some of the show's broad strokes echo the stellar Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yet Bell's Veronica doesn't need the supernatural to tackle a challenge. She's a real girl, conflicted, prickly, lovesick, yearning, sometimes even scared. As Veronica tries to solve the mystery, she must also handle her own heartbreaks, and the moral stumbles of those closest to her. Happily, she's got a great best pal, Wallace (the effervescent Percy Daggs III), and possibly the coolest, most understanding TV dad ever (Enrico Colantoni). The boxed set includes 22 episodes (many with deleted scenes), a behind-the-scenes mini-doc, a cute gag reel, and a short profile film, Veronica Mars: Not Your Average Teen Detective. You can say that again. --A.T. Hurley

COOL THING #2 and #3

60s Pychedelic Pop and Freakbeat made modern. I've only heard 2 songs off this album, "Nice Day" and "City of Love", but they're both incredibley good amazing! You can hear them on www.persephoneesbees.com . Make sure to listen for Angelina starting her Vespa up at the end of "Nice Day". A nice touch.

The Grates Debut Album! (Aug. 29)

They came out with an E.P about a year ago that I liked alot. I don't know what took so long to get an album out, but I'm happy it's finally coming. Loud, innovative, agressive, punch-you-in-the-lung punk rock and lo-fi noise. I love it.

LILY ALLEN! "alright, still" Came out Aug 1. Poppy, happy, rocksteady and reggae with her spitting lyrics over it in her adorable North London accent, though I kind of doubt that she's as urban or tough as she seems to think she is. I don't own this yet, even with a supposed domestic release, it's tough to find.

Strange that all my cds for August are debuts...hmmm...and all are female fronted...I guess that's strange...I dunno.

See, how cool right? Right. One last note on stuff you should be into. I've stayed away from "Cable and Deadpool" comics because while Deadpool is awesome and incredibly funny, I though Cable would get his suck all over it and it would in turn suck. Not the case! I picked up issue #30 and loved it and I'm going to find the tpbs for the earlier issues if they exist. Just a tip.

mattnash

"I've waited for a thousand years, a thousand years. Can't wait to see you."

This quote came to my mind as I watched X-Men 3 last night. I mean, I knew there was no way it could possibly as good as X-2, so I was just hoping for a decent flick, but even with my very low expectations, I couldn't help but be sorely disappointed. If it was just some random action movie, I would have walked out half way through, but I kept hoping something interesting would happen. For about the first hour, I kept thinking, "it'll get better...it'll get better", but after an hour of the drudgery of watching the sloppy writing nd dialogue that reduced the once complex and layered characters of the first 2 films (except for Storm) into elementary grade cartoonish versions of themselves, I gave up all hope. Especially as multiple plot points and characters are thrown into the mix, and neither the new characters or plot points are fleshed out and he does absolutely nothing with the new plot points, they just sit there to rot. It's like Ratner just wanted "filler", between his disappointing action scenes, which are extremely low on drama because they're so poorly written that it seems that no one's in danger or are so melodramatic and cheesy that you're looking to gouge out your eyes and your ears. All this sounds harsh, but these are characters, ideas, and stories that I've grown up with and loved for most of my life and yes, X-men books still command the vast majority of my comic book spending budget, and it seems a terrible affront to see these characters reduced to this, especially after X-2 was nigh-perfect in almost every way. Batman Begins is now my favorite comic book movie, but X-2 is a very close second and I think I'll just pretend that X-Men 3 never happend, perhaps the Professor could remove it from my memory (well, not now, he lost his powers on M-Day.{My apoligies if any of you are reading X-Men Deadly Genesis} Whoops!) or the Scarlet Witch could alter reality for me and literally make sure this movie was never made.

I know some of you need to see it. So, go ahead, I needed to see it to decide for myself after reading the mildly disapointing to downright terrible reviews, but make sure you stay til after the credits are completely over. There's one last scene to make you cringe after the credits and that's the scariest part of all because they leave the story open for a fourth film, which is so scary a thought that I couldn't sleep last night

Bryan Singer! Superman Returns better be worth it,

mattnash

This movie is almost as painful as having all the adamantium ripped from your body.

It was originally supposed to come out way back in December, so yeah, my need is great. New praise for Scott PIlgrim since the last time I posted about it:

Wii Warioware! With Ashley! Also, new Zelda And Super Mario with innovative controls at launch means my check is in the mail Nintendo. The innovations that have been achieved with the DS, coupled with what I've seen and read about Nintendo at E3 has me the most excited and hopeful I've been for Nintendo since the SNES launch. And the most excited I've been about the industry since the Sega Dreamcast. I am a kid again.

"who's the little girl living in the haunted mansion?"

P.S. My DS Lite has arrived and well worth the wait. The extra $$ I spent for the Japanese colors? Only time will tell, but my DS Lite does match the clothes I'm wearing today! KAWAII!!! "Hello backpack. Hello Shirt." I can't stop playing Meteos! Also, I'm really bad right now, and many inhabitants of far away planets are paying for my ineptitude with their lives. I'm sorry, I just can't stop playing! I'm trying to save you guys! Remember it's the thought that counts as you and everything you love is destroyed by an onslaught of phantasmagoric meteors.

BRiNg mE MY PrETty!

Something might be happening. Riddles in the dark. Whispers in the garage and all that. I have a feeling...and then there's my dreams...I can't say anything because I don't want to jinx it, but something is happening...for good or ill...

In a completely unrelated story, I am waiting for the UPS man/woman, she/he is supposed to deliver my shiny new Japanese Ice Blue Nintendo DS Lite today. So much need have I for it. He/she will hurry or consequences she/he will face. Anticipation overload...Hurry and I'll love you forever...fail me and life you will despise....

Semi-interesting anecdotes within!

Well, I'm having a lazy Sunday afternoon. I figured I'd write a little bit, if you don't mind that is. My brother Aaron preached at church this morning because Pastor Chuck (the Sr. Pastor) was preaching at our old church in Grandview. It was good stuff and stuff people needed to hear, so, um....big ups?

I watched a little baseball this afternoon. The Cubs and Cardinals on WGN is the only thing I was able to watch, though the Royals did beat the Indians 5-1. Yeah, yeah, we're 4 and 13, but that's two wins in a row and that's something. Also, people here don't realize how mad it makes me when they say stuff about the Royals and Chiefs. I just smile and hold it in, but the dam is going to burst one of these days and it won't be good. "Oh, my pretty, it's still my city".

I have been listening to a lot of Charlotte Martin lately, as I'm getting ready for her concert DVD release in a few weeks. It's called "Something like a DVD". She has a song called "Something like a hero" and I'm sure that's where the DVD title came from. She was at the Grand Emporium (yeah, that one, on Main, just a little past two of my old spots, Clint's Comics and Recycled Sounds) on my Birthday, the exact day, not just like my birthday weekend. She was there Monday, March 13. That made me so homesick you cannot believe. That would have been the best Birthday ever. And one of you guys that I made come with me because it was my birthday would yell "hey, Charlotte, it's our friend's birthday" and she would invite me next to her piano and she would play one of her songs just for me and sing it just to me. And it would have been the best Birthday ever. Maybe that was like a sign that I'm not where I'm supposed to be, geographically speaking.

What else? Oh, Gilmore Girls watchers who read this: I'm hoping Logan dies. Am I a horrible person? I'm just thinking that Rory is going to forgive him and take him back and it's just wrong, she should be with Jess or introduce a character played by me for her to fall in love with.

In Cool Dork News, Chynna Clugtson (my favorite comic book writer/artist) has released a new book called "Strangetown" with Ian Shaughnessy and it's quite a departure from her usual stuff that deals with teens and 20 somethings that are involved in Mod, Ska, and punk cultures, but still contains her sense of humor. This one's about a girl named Vanora who has apparently been shipwrecked (twice?) and washes ashore in a small town in Oregon. I'm intriqued after reading the first issue; and as it is a mystery of sorts, it looks to be a good one. Below is the cover. Less is more and all that. Is it just me or does this cover belong on the coffee table of the exquisitely fashionable and artistic?

That's all I've got to bore you with for now, I guess. Bore me with some comments.

Vidro just grounded into a Fielder's Choice. Come on Jose! The Ninja Black Sox need you! He is 3-5 with 3 RBIs for the night, so I guess I'll forgive him. Garret Anderson is now up, 2 outs, runners at the corners...waiting...waiting...BALL 1!...waiting...waiting...Man-Ram is up now too!...Anderson grounded out...boo...Man-Ram, with a full count...here comes the payoff...foul, let's do it again...Ramirez walks, his 3rd of the night...Chase Utley is up now, going to face Levan Hernandez...waiting...waiting...waiting...Washington is changing pitchers now, Utley vs. Eischen...waiting...waiting...Eischen's picture is 5 degrees fiercier than Stairs' pic...waiting...AND...AND...Utley walks...not that interesting or worth taking the time to read, but that's how it goes in Crack-a-lackin' League Baseball and sadly, that's how it usually goes on this Xanga site.

In defense of my complete waste of my free time, there's no Lost tonight and I have been watching the Narnia DVD documentaries, so I haven't been sitting in front of my computer all night. And I'm going to turn this off soon and finish Perelandra tonight and then it's time for That Hideous Strength. By the way, if any of you ever read C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy, I reccomend listening to I Chase the Devil AKA Ironshirt by Lee Perry and So Much Trouble in the World by Bob Marley as you read them. These songs match up perfectly with the books. Go figure.

"check the gate"
