Decluttering: We Are Too Attached To This World

I was listening to a sermon given by Doug Small that actually pertained to a different topic but it is what he said during part of it that was something I thought was perfect for decluttering!

"We are attached to this world.  Too attached and it's things.  If you can't give it away - you don't own it - it owns you!"

Also during this sermon he mentions a story about John Wesley...

A man came to him, John Wesley, and said, "Sir!  Your house is burning down!"  To which Wesley replied, "Not my house but the Lord's house.  Thanks be to God is is one less thing for me to worry about!"

I loved this and just had to share.

I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend and a very Happy Mother's Day!  We are planning a picnic which I just love doing and hoping the rain holds off or passes by really quick!    If not, we will go to Plan B.

Love and God's Blessings to You All,

xoxo Cat

Decluttering: Laundry & The Mount Washmore Issue

Back again but this time to address the laundry issue.  It's a good thing you are sitting down because I'm going to tell you something you probably don't want to hear about your clothes...

(Did I say bummer?  Boy does that age me or what?  Like so totally man!)

Recap...

I have included some links and videos below to help determine your colors, size/shape and just how many items of clothing one really needs.  With the links, I don't necessarily agree with everything said or shared but as always, sift out what you need, take the good and move on.

How to Determine Your Season

Shape Your Style

Knowing Your Body Type (Video)  Be sure to check out the other videos listed on the different styles for the body shapes.

How Many Clothes Do I Need  I don't agree with the not letting your children put their clothes away part - it is all part of the learning.  If they are too little, be there to help them put their clothes away so that you can teach them the importance of putting their clothes away properly.  It is such a wonderful opportunity to talk with them.

I just read a book not too long ago that pared clothing down to two basic skirts, one black dress, two white blouses (one long sleeve and one short) and the rest was simple accessories with the persons colors to help change the look of her wardrobe.  She also mentioned just how much underwear one needs (making sure to have certain underwear for certain times of the month) and to have only 2 bras in your skin color.  I love this concept and something I continually work on when paring down my clothing to the basics.

Something else I did not mention is that we overwash our clothes!  Just because we wore it once does not mean that it has to be immediately thrown into the laundry basket.  Now, if you have been working out in the garden, then yes by all means, wash it but for the most part you don't need to.  Simply shake out your shirt and skirts, hang them up properly and let them air out and hang back into your closet.  With shirts that I wear, I hang them inside out.  This not only helps with airing them out but also lets me know I wore this already.  This saves not only the wear and tear on my clothing but a lot less laundry!  Most of us are clean and bathe everyday and unless you have a problem that requires you to clean your clothing every time you wear them...then you do what you have to do.  I'm just trying to help us look at our laundry...our clothes in a different manner.

If you have the laundry blues, here is something to really give some thought about doing your laundry...

Le French Laundry - Ten Ways My Laundry (probably) Isn't Like Yours

Be sure to read the comments left by others in the same situation.  Kari is just the cutest thing!  I love reading her blog.  So the next time you feel like complaining about doing your laundry, hop back over to Kari's post about how she has to do her laundry.

I'm Here...

...just busy taking advantage of the absolutely beautiful weather we have had (weeding, planting & starting new seeds) and a bit of decluttering.  Decluttering is always a continual process that takes place no matter how much you have decluttered before.  Clothing that the children have outgrown - they are growing like weeds - that needs to be gone through and donated.  Books that have been read, cds that have been listened to and dvds/videos that have been watched over and over that just need to be shared with others!

Yesterday, Sarah and I walked down a bag (yard bag) full of books, cds, dvds and video tapes to donate to the library.  We also dropped off quite a few books for our church library as well.  I have read many of these books over and over that it is time to pass them on to someone else who might enjoy them.  If I do need to read them again, I know where to find them!  The great thing is that the library can use them but also store them therefore keeping the clutter down in my home!
