Feature Article:

Trapped in the Cult of the Next Thing

There exists today a powerful cult with tens of millions of fanatical members spread throughout the land of plenty. It’s congregation is calculating, relentless, and insatiable; they are willing to risk everything they have in order to get what they don’t. It’s a cult of wanton excess, and unfortunately, most of us are card carrying members. Spend some time with this award winning essay by Pastor Mark Buchanan as he airs out the dirty laundry of consumerism, ingratitude, and the pig-god of mammon who rules it all, promising happiness but always leaving you wanting more.

Columns:

Resting In His Shadow – What’s Pulling Your String?

Fishing for crabs with a string and a chicken neck is almost an art. In it’s desire, all the crab sees is a juicy morsel that it wants to have; the fact that there is a string attached to it goes completely unnoticed. In fact, if you do it correctly, the crab won’t even know what is going on . . . until it’s too late. What about the “juicy morsels” that we come across in our own lives? Where do they take us? And what is the price that we pay to get them?

Finding My Way – The Devil is in the Details

A teenage girl walking in the mall, a Christian rock concert on an Autumn Saturday, and a young boy going to church for the first time; three completely unrelated events that are all linked by a common theme: the open scorn of those who do not approve. Is it possible for well meaning Christians to actually turn people away from the Lord in our efforts to enforce the details of His will? Maybe a better question is, are the details we are trying to enforce really His will, or only our own? Examine your own mission & priorities and determine for yourself whose kingdom you serve; whether you are an apostle for Jesus Christ, or an unwitting - but effective - lapdog of the enemy.

Choosing Home – The First Time I Gave Birth

There’s nothing like being totally prepared, especially when you’re an expectant mother approaching labor for the first time. You know what’s going to happen, what it’s going to be like, and how it will all play out. Then the first contraction hits . . . and suddenly the orderly little vision you’ve carried in your mind pops like a balloon. Join Molly Aley in this touching, hilarious, and oh-so-true look at giving birth for the first time.

Song of Solomon – She is What You Made Her

Having a few issues lately with the wife? Don’t think she’s quite what she used to be? You probably have a few good points. But as your mind contemplates at length her many faults, don’t forget to fully explore this question also: “Are you conveniently not noticing YOUR part of the problem?” You are the head of your household, and you have the sole authority – and sole responsibility – for it’s condition. So if you don’t like what you see when you look at your wife, just remember; she is what you made her.

He Said / She Said – His, Hers & Ours

They meet, they fall in love, they marry, and suddenly everything he owns is gone . . . Hey! Wait a minute!

Lose yourself in over 2 dozen articles written by men & women from around the country; from Florida to Alaska and even “across the pond”. Stories, recipes, inspiration, advice, poetry, self-discovery; even a little humor. Cook up a whole flock of chickens, send your little girl on a treasure hunt, throw some human rocks into God’s tumbler, visit the mouse who’s pleasantly stuck between the city & country, prepare your children for the storms of life ahead, and make a little compost while you’re cleaning your oven. You’ll find all of it and much more in the January / February issue of Making It Home.

What is the magazine like?

Making It Home was conceived as a throwback to simpler times. We’ve tried to give it the look & feel of an early 1900’s periodical, with thicker paper than in most magazines you’ll find today. In an effort to give it a more graceful & elegant “Victorian” appearance, we use a high quality, off-white, non-glossy paper, an entirely black & white color scheme, and pictures & images that are intended to inspire. The magazine is approximately 60 pages in length, with no advertisements or classifieds.

Our writers are not professionals; they are real women who have not only “done that”, but are still doing it. They write from the heart, and their contributions to the magazine are entirely voluntary, with the intent of helping others by sharing their own experiences and perspectives gained through years of both success and failure.

Making It Home is a Christian publication, and the majority of articles are tied to scripture and the importance & rewards of following God’s guidance in our lives. Please read our Vision, Mission, and Priority statements on the “About” page; if you like the concept of the magazine and find that you also agree with our goals, you will probably enjoy Making It Home (our cancellation rate is less than 1%).

i cant wait to get the next copy. cat, i have EVERY issue on our coffee table! RYC: yes, jim and i have decided christmas in our home will ALWAYS be based on simplicity in gifts but rich in quality time, playing games and fellowship. we went to a nice restaurant once but a simple one (japanese), we cooked together, played several fierce hands of spades ~smile~ went to church and made the most of each other. we stuck to a budget for each child and colored coded each person's gifts with different paper. we decided that in the next couple of christmases there may be spouses and/or grandchildren and at that time, we will be giving gifts of gold, frankensense and myrh to everyone... in other words, each person will receive three gifts that will be presented in that way after jim reads the christmas story. hope you all had a gorgeous celebration!!! i'm still on pins and needles to hear about the way you all celebrated with nothing new. i love that idea and can't wait to hear about it!!! hugs! :o)
