  • Summer Busyness has begun!

    Last weekend, Hubby, Son#2 & Son#3, along with other youth group highschoolers & parents, rafted the Royal Gorge. It is one of the most challenging white water rafting trips in the country, & the water was raging. Hubby took my camera, with its wonderful waterproofing glove, & took lots of pictures. He didn't get the roughest water- ya gotta keep your hand on the oars in the rapids, but he was a little braver than I was when it came to taking pictures.

    Everyone survived the trip, even though one young lady (a tiny slip of a girl) went through five rapids without benefit of a boat. Praise God, she came out with only a couple of bruises, they got her back into he raft & she finished the trip. Everyone else had a blast, & were all ready to do it again.

    I spent a good portion of the week helping Hubby prepare for today's venture, running all over town to replace certain supplies that he needed. One of the things that attracted me to him (first as a friend, then as a, well, more than friend) was his unique vocation at the time. He has not pursued this vocation for several years, but occasionally uses it for special occasions. Today was one of those days. He was asked to present the devotion for the Father/Son lunch at church today.

    IMG_0250

    When Hubby & I met, he was a professional clown & mime. The devotion he gave today involved removing his make-up to make the point that we need to let others see us as God sees us, & not wear the masks we tend to wear, & to allow God to change us, as well.

    We usually spend Father's Day with my parents. They spent the week out of town, so I talked my mom out of it this year. My sis can't be there tomorrow, & Dad just spent a week helping build a church in South Dakota. He doesn't care if special days are marked at all, so we will be having dinner with them next Sunday afternoon. He will get the blessing of a nice, quiet, relaxing day tomorrow. The blessing for us will be being able to spend the day doing what Hubby wants to do. After church, we will go out to eat at a new BBQ place he's been wanting to try, then a movie. We haven't seen "Horton Hears A Who" yet, Hubby really wants to see it & it is at the cheapo theater right now. We might go into the mountains & have a snowball fight, just for kicks, too. There's still plenty of snow to be found, & not too far up. We don't have a Sunday evening service on Father's Day, or Mother's Day, so families have plenty of time to be together.

    I've got a week of relative quiet, beginning Monday, then a week of more Summer Busyness as I help my guys get camping gear & food together for the church mens' retreat, which will overlap three days of festivities for my 30th high school reunion.

  • The camera waterproofing worked... I found out the hard way!

    IMG_2223

    Wouldn't ya know, Browns Canyon, which our youth pastor told us was a walk in the park, very easy, v-e-r-y boring rafting trip, was running, in places, 12 feet higher than normal, & nearly 1000 cubic feet per second faster! Our youth pastor guided rafts on the Arkansas River for several years, so he knows this stretch of water. He said it was the wildest he'd ever seen it!

    On the biggest rapid of the first leg of the trip, my camera, with me attached to it, ended up in the water. We high-sided on a rock, & the water pulled me out & under. The life vest did it's job & got my head out of the water, & I had a grip on the line on the side of the raft, but then the life vest failed me. They were supposed to use it to pull me out of the water, but because the vest apparently didn't fit right, they nearly pulled it off over my head! That was such a scary feeling. The vest was in front of my face, I had let go of the line so they could pull me in, & I was scared to death that the vest was going to come off. After what seemed like forever, but was probably five minutes or less, I was back in the raft, gasping for breath. However, after a couple of minutes of catching my breath, I was back in position, handling my oar, instead of cowering on the bottom. Ever since I was 10, & I was thrown (as a non-swimmer) into the deep end of the pool, I've been scared to the point of phobia, of drowning.

    By the grace of God, I survived & finished the trip, although it took all of the courage I could muster to get back in that raft after we stopped for lunch, & the adrenaline rush ended, especially since they told us that there were ten class IV rapids on the last leg. They did pull us off of the river early, because the water was running too fast through the last, biggest rapid. PRAISE GOD!

    Son#4 & TheGirl enjoyed themselves, although TheGirl was in my raft & had to watch & even try to help with, the ordeal I was going through. She got sick at lunch, & was moved to the trip leader's boat, & just sat in the back, but she had fun.

    The photo at the top is the "wildest" water I was able to shoot, because when the water got worse, we were all very busy!

    TheGirl hiding under her hat

    IMG_2242

    EDIT: I found out this evening that at the time the high side of the raft was popping me up, & the water was pulling me out, that TheGirl's side of the raft was under water. When the raft righted itself & she could see, I was gone! I can't imagine doing that to my little girl. I'm proud of her, though. She kept her head together & did what the guide told her to do.

    Those who are about to die, salute you!

    I have a list of things I have never wanted to do. I'm doing one of them tomorrow. I'm going white water rafting on the Arkansas River (Browns Canyon- supposedly the most popular white water trip in the country). It's a middle school family outing with our church. Since I have two middle school aged children, I get to go! (yipee- can you feel the joy?) Hubby would go, but he's got a wedding to go to, & he's going on the high school family rafting trip down the Royal Gorge next Saturday with two of the older boys.

    You see, water & I are not good friends. I was thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool as a non-swimming child, & never got over it. I will go in water that is no higher than my chin. I will go under said shallow water as long as it is my own choice to do so. But being splashed in the face or dunked is not my idea of a good time! I don't even let the shower splash my face. Browns Canyon is going to be a major step of faith for me.

    I did go out & buy a water resistant sleeve for the older digital tonight, so, if I can release whatever death grip I have on the raft, I'll take pictures.

    If I live through it, I'll let you know how it goes!

  • Somewhat back to normal... The catchup blog

    ~~~~~For those of you who are following this saga, my mil is doing better. She just finished the antibiotic she was on, so, prayerfully, her blood sugar getting lower again. We haven't had any "loopy" spells since the last one, praise God! She sees her doctor on Friday. I hope he'll be able to confirm that the sinus infection is gone. He's talking about changing her diabetes meds, though. I wish he'd wait until she's spent some time without the extra meds & let her system level off for a month. Ah, well. I'm not the "professional", am I?
    ~~~~~We've gotten quite a few storage tubs emptied from their bedbug quarantine. I've been arranging & rearranging as videos, books, software & tapes & CDs have been brought in from the garage. My bookshelves & the video shelves all have doubled rows on them. Will they stay that way? Probably, but who knows? I have found that pop case trays make excellent cassette tape holders. They stack on top of one another so nicely! I'll probably try to find something similar, but deeper, at Sam's Club the next time I go, to put software in. I think I might be able to use some shelf space a little more efficiently. Yeah, the boxes are ugly, but a little time & something to cover them with will solve that!

    ~~~~~I'm done with Awana for the summer, & I already miss it! We had our award ceremony a week ago Sunday. I have three kiddos going up to the next level (Sparks) including Son#5 (sniff!), four are staying & there is only one child from the church that will be old enough to come into Cubbies in the fall. There may be some in the Spanish congregation that I'm not aware of. But, seven seems to be our number of perfection, considering our classroom space, staff & the time we need to get the Cubbies to quote their verses. The kids that go up into Sparks will be old enough to be in my Sunday School class in September! I love that!
    ~~~~~Hubby blessed me with a new camera for my birthday last week. I posted a blog & a pic on my OTHER Xanga. Hubby, five of the kids & I also went out to Red Lobster & spent way too much $$$, but it sure was good! Son#1 had to work.

    ~~~~~Son#3 & Son#4 still have a few weeks of school left in order to finish their courses for the year. TheGirl finished hers a few weeks ago & I've been having to make work for her!
    ~~~~~ We spent Memorial Day driving around in cloudy, drizzly, rainy weather. We had hoped for a cookout & hike (for Hubby, his buddy from work & the kids), but the weather just didn't cooperate.
    We made it to our destination, & decided it's one to go back to. It was beautiful, even in the rain. After we gave up on the idea of eating in the cold & wet, we went back down to a lower, slightly warmer & dryer elevation & visited the Swetsville Zoo. Nothing living on display in this zoo, just the fanciful creations of a welder with too much time on his hands!

    Here are some pics- Enjoy!

    One of the two reasons I love living on the east side of Denver.

  • Another ER Trip

    Last night, my kids alerted me to the fact that my mil wasn't acting normal again. I had been down here in the basement working on a project or two. I went upstairs, watched her a little & talked to her & decided things weren't right, so I called Hubby at work, then had Son#1 help me get my mil to the hospital. This time, her blood sugar was too high; it has been for several days, due to a sinus infection & a steroid she's been taking. They did some tests, treated her for the high blood sugar, then sent her home after 3:00 this morning.

    I "slept" on the couch last night so I could hear if anything happened, & so I would see her when she came out of her room this morning. She was back on oxygen while sleeping, & I was close to the roaring, thumping compressor. Funny thing was, I finally did get to sleeping through the noise, but I woke up when my mil shut it off!

    She's still not quite right today, but she's getting better. She finished the steroid today, so hopefully things will start getting better in the next day or so.

    We thought we might have to take The Girl to the doctor today. She's been sick the last couple of days with a fever, sore throat, stomach ache, stuffy head & dizziness, but she's better, not over it, but better, today. Boy, am I glad. I'm just not up to going anywhere after probably only 2 hours of decent sleep. I've still got plenty to do today, though, if I can find the energy.

    I'd better go start dinner. I'm going the easy route with ham steaks & mac-n-cheese today.

  • Mother's Day fun

    I hope all the moms who read this had a great day. I know I had a good time.

    We started celebrating yesterday, when Hubby & three of the kids pulled up to the garage just as I was unloading groceries. I was blocking the garage door, & he was driving the car that belongs in the garage. So I closed the car doors that were open for me to get the groceries out, & pulled the car forward enough in the alley to allow hubby to get his mom's car in the garage.

    As I backed up, Son#4 came up to the car & informed me I had to stay in the car, & I had to look in the other direction. Dutifully, I did so. I love surprises when it comes to gifts, so I'm not a peeker.
    A couple of minutes later, Son#5 (the four-year-old) comes running out to the car with a huge, priceless grin on his face, a small mylar balloon on a stick, & a yellow rose. I hadn't even gotten out of the car yet!

    That was not part of Hubby's plan, but it was very sweet. As I went around the back to get a bag or two to carry in the hand not holding my flower (Son#5 very generously offered to hold the balloon for me ), Hubby came out, informed me that I needed some space cleared on my desk, & announced that I did not have to cook dinner!

    IMG_2146

    When I got inside, Son#3 presented me with a red rose, & (sweet child!) a bag of chocolate truffles!
    I went down to the desk in the basement, & Hubby presented me with a pretty purple bouquet in a little vase in a very cute wire holder. After I went upstairs to get water in the vase for my roses, Son#4 gave me a bouquet of three red carnations.

    After groceries were put away, the six of us went out to dinner to Black-eyed Pea. Chicken Fried Steaks all around, except for Son#5, who opted for- what else- Mac 'n' Cheese. It was delicious, fun & very nice, but a little sad, since the two oldest weren't able to attend. While at the table, The Girl gave me her gift. She wasn't able to go shopping with the others, so she put together a little bag of beads from a huge selection she just got from Freecycle, & a little pin with a space to put a very small photo.

    Before we left for church this morning, Son#2 gave me a card with a gift card for Michael's. I can see my bead collection growing! After a very nice church service, we went to my parents house for dinner. My mom hates to go out on holidays, but likes her family to be around, so she cooks! All of the kids but the oldest were able to come for an afternoon dinner, & he was able to come out around 4:00. While we were there, I took the opportunity to get pictures of all of the kids. My mil has a frame that has pictures of all of her grandkids in it, but they were taken almost three years ago. I'm going to update it for her this week. (She said NO GIFTS! I had to come up with something! ) Here are the uncropped "raw" photos. I'll have to size them to fit in letter shaped spaces)

    We left my parents' house around 6:00, & headed to my next gift. We went out for ice cream, ALL EIGHT OF US! Getting all of us together is not an easy task these days. It was fun, even the ice cream fight my boys got into in the parking lot (no pics, they kept ducking from the camera). On the way home, Hubby indulged me, & took me to some of the older sections of town to take pictures of Victorian homes for this week's contest on iliveinmycamera
    I didn't think I was going to be able to enter, since the pics must be taken after the theme is announced. I got some good shots, & uploaded one for my first entry into this fun little contest!
    You can go there & vote, starting tomorrow. I can't tell you which one is mine, though!

    I'm praying for a "normal" week. My mil is much better, although the steroid has driven her blood sugar rather high. But, she did her laundry today, & cleaned the kitchen. The road to recovery looks good!

About Me

  • I'm a country girl wannabe, stuck in the middle of a growing urban jungle. I'm the proud mom of 5 sons (born in '87, '89, '91, '93 & '03) & 1 daughter (born in '96), all of whom have been homeschooled since birth. My hubby & I were married in 1985. We live with my mil, in her home. I'm a born again believer in Jesus Christ, a stay-at-home wife, a Sunday School teacher, an Awana Cubbies director, a singer, a photographer, & a beader. I love chocolate, Nutcracker Sweet tea, Coke, purple, wildflowers, aspen trees, snow, the Colorado Rocky Mountains, dulcimers, autoharps, bagpipes, most things Celtic, the Bible, science fiction & fantasy, Jesus, my family & my church, not necessarily in that order. After all, if Jesus hadn't created chocolate, I wouldn't be a very happy person!
