I just wanted to say "Hi!!" to everyone. School is back in and I'm about as "normal" as normal can get right now. Just wanted to let you know!
Don't read on if you don't want to read a vent....I just needed some place to get it out......
I've been over-obessing about this last storm, and needed a break from all the news and such. I just did a little research, and I figured out that this is the worst hurricane season ever. Lousiana (well, my area anyway) got rains from TS Arlene and Dennis. Both hit the Pensacola area, but we did get rains from them; at least I think--I was in Virginia for those two. TS Cindy got us head on. Then Katrina came, and we got the "good" side. And Rita just left, but not without hitting us with her "bad" side. I don't remember ANY season like it. I have a few friends who have water in their homes, and these are people that live in the next parish. And I'm sure I have friends who lost everything in the western part of the state.
Hurricane Rita really hit me hard.... like emotionally. I knew she'd do damage, but I never imagined that one of my most favorite areas would be pretty much wiped out. Holly Beach is gone--only pilings remain....Holly Beach was my first "big" (or long) trip to go to a festival pageant way back in 1996. Holly Beach was beautiful, and I have a good bit of pictures from there.....Cameron is basically wiped out (again--happend in 1957 with Hurricane Audrey)....of all of Cameron's landmarks...the water tower still stands. There wasn't much to do in Cameron, but the people sure were caring and loving. Vermillion Parish is flooded, as is Abbeville and many other areas. Our crawfish industry in that area is pretty much dead...as is our beef industry (lots of cows drowned), and most likely our seafood industry due to the large dead zone in the Gulf. It just makes me really sad.
Hearing that New Orleans flooded because of the levee breaches didn't effect me this much. Hubby says it's because I loved the Lake Charles area, and really disliked New Orleans. I'm not to sure about that. I've never been big on New Orleans, and everyone knew that city was a freaking bowl. But Lake Charles itself was above sea level, a good bit, if I am correct. I'm really feeling down because of this. My friends in the lower Terrebonne areas are flooded; My Lake Charles area friends are most likely flooded; the wonderful people of Cameron that I've met over the years have nothing; Abbeville, Delcambre, and other communities in that area are flooded.....It just gets me....really. I just can't believe that there has been this much damage.
The local (well, channel 4) news showed pictures of the Abbeville/Delcambre area yesterday. My mom and I were like, "I know that...that's the Chevron we stop at on Highway 14 on our way to Shrimp and Cattle." It had a good bit of water.....they showed a Delcambre Ambulance with water halfway up it. It really tugs at my heart.... I don't know or love New Orleans like I know and love the western part of Louisiana.......My heart goes out to those who were in the path of Hurricane Rita......
I'm going to stop now.......I'm making myself more sad...... |
