I am currently on a three-plus week road trip from Oregon to New York with my family. My other blog (http://n8.ath.cx/n8) is currently down so I am posting what I would typically post there, here.

Here's a slight checklist of highlights from the trip before I get to the "real" portion of the post.

[x] - Standing on the star in the middle of the field at Texas Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys.) The story behind this one is that Dallas is my favorite team and the gate was supposed to be locked. I'll let you fill in the details.

[x] - Ridding the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Unfortunately, it was too foggy to see dolphins or anything cool like that. Whatever, any ship that has an elevator on it is worth putting on a checklist.

[x] - Staying with the Andersons in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Playing "What Were You Thinking?" and failing. Trying to get stuck balls down from their tree and only getting more balls stuck.

[x] - Staying in a hotel in Times Square "on Broadway." And, or course, singing the song over and over.

[x] - Seeing Pirates on opening night. We arrived 45 minutes early for the midnight showing and that wasn't early enough. Everyone else arrived more than 45 minutes early and therefore there were no seats left... Not even the neck-cracker seats in the front row. We had to take in the 12:30 showing.

[x] - Visiting the Apple Store on 5th Avenue, New York.

[x] - Grabbing both hoop rims at Cameron Indoor on the campus of Duke University. (I'm trying to space the "sports" checks out on my list.)

[x] - Driving through an incredible storm (today.) The whole 30 minutes of this storm looked as if a cloud could spin off a tornado at any moment. It was awesome.

[x] - Walking into Jamba Juice and almost instantly being involved in someone else’s "mis-order." As I walked in the person making the drinks hollered out, "does anyone want a free Pena Colada?" No one answered for a while so I said, "Sure, I'll take it." I was hesitant because "I had a bad experience" with Pena Coladas in the past and I was thinking this one was going to taste like my bad experience. It turns out it is now my new favorite drink at Jamba Juice.

I'll be thinking of more checks for the list.

While staying in Times Square, New York, I did a lot of walking in and around the Times Square area. One of the most astounding and unexpected aspects of these walks was the incredible amount of people walking the streets with me. I say this without even mentioning the masses of cars that were battling the people for use of the crosswalks.

In seeing this great amount of people I was left realizing that everyone has their own agenda and their own problems, desires, dreams, and feelings. Rarely do these people care about other people. They are the most important person and they live their life as if that is the case. As I walked amongst the crowds on my way to Jamba Juice or the Apple Store and realized all of the people around me, I could only ponder my own motives. Was I just like them? Did I only care for myself? Did I have an argumentative spirit? How would I appear any different than any of them? I believe it is possible to actually shine in the world... Was I shining? Or do I try to fit in? Do I try to not rock the boat? Do I feel embarrassed to truly love people? Do I keep quiet when I could lend words to help heal or encourage someone?

How am I different from them? When Jesus came to this world in the humbled form of a human, he stood out. He was clearly and entirely different. If I am striving to be like Christ what must I change in my life?

Look at this like a beautiful masterpiece painting that has been covered up by a cheap and ugly painting's canvas. I must continually rip away the worthless painting and the world's marks on my life to reveal the truly beautiful creation that lies underneath.
