I know were just teenagers but were not invincible, and unfortunately, I learned that the hard way. My name is Natalie. I was 11 when it all hit rock bottom. On September 13th, 2001, my sister, Heather at the age of 14, was diagnosed with Euyings Sarcoma, a cancer in the hip. The day my sister was diagnosed, I got home from school, she told me, and right that second I called my best friend, Kirsten. We cried on the phone not knowing what to say or think, we were both in shock. I never would have thought such a thing to ever happen to my family. I remember that day like it was yesterday. My sister went to the hospital, started chemo, and her being sick became a part of our everyday life. The hospital became a second home, and the doctors and nurses became family. The chemo made my sister sick a lot and she lost her hair. The thing she hated most was people starring. I could tell by the look in her eyes how irritated and mad it made her. She was no different than other person in the world, she was just.. sick. My sister got better, and eventually went into remission. She was so close to having her hip replaced, then the cancer came back, and things only got worse. As time went on, the doctors did everything they could in their power to help her. The cancer then spread to her lungs and kidneys, it would soon take over her whole body. They had no sudden healing. My parents didn’t tell us kids, but somehow we knew that something was wrong. My sister was always on a breathing machine to help her; I couldn’t stand looking at her without crying. The doctors told my sister they didn’t know how long she had, whether it be 2 days, 2 weeks, or 2 months. My sister past away at the age of 17 on June 10th, 2004. She held on for so long, and never stopped trying. We’re asking why this happens, for us, who have died to live, it’s unfair. 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, 80,000 of those kids die. To think that my sister was only one out of that 80,000 hurts. The only thing they don’t teach us in school is how to say goodbye. When you say goodbye to someone, the only thing you are left with is memories, and to tell to you truth, memories fade.
