British Chevening Scholarships
Special Announcement: BRITISH CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS
The Malaysia programme of the British Government's Chevening Scholarship scheme is open for applications for the year 2009/10. Each year under the programme, 20 Chevening scholarships are awarded to outstanding young Malaysians for postgraduate study in the UK. The deadline for applications for the 2009 programme is 10 October 2008 (24 September 2008 for civil servants).
The Malaysia programme of the British Chevening Scholarships scheme is targeted at Malaysia's future leaders, decision makers and opinion-formers. Successful candidates will be Malaysian citizens, age between 25 and 35, have a good academic record, fluent English, a strong personality as well as ambition and leadership skills. They will be young people whose enthusiasm, commitment and skills mean they will have a real impact in their chosen field. Successful candidates would also normally have a minimum of 2 years professional experience.
Chevening Scholarhips are for postgraduate study only- one year Masters. Candidates may apply for further study at any British University for the course of their choice. However each year we also offer a number of "Chevening Partnership Awards", co-funded by the private sector or British universities, which specify either the institution or the course to be studied. Any Chevening candidate who applies for a University or course specified in a Partnership award will automatically be considered for both the Partnership Award and a general Chevening scholarship. In all cases it is up to the applicant himself to secure a place at his chosen university.
The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees (with the exception of business school programmes, where the fees' element of the scholarship is capped at £12,000), a monthly living allowance, a return airfare and other sundry allowances.
Application forms are available online at www.education.org.my, www.britishcouncil.org.my and www.UKinMalaysia.fco.gov.
You may also email the British Council at scholarships@britishcouncil.org.my.

Today's 3-in-1 entry: Glitter & Dazzle, Graduation Ceremony & Dave Tolo
One of the main writers of this blog had gone "missing" for a while due to a hectic work schedule recently. Anyway, here's a little entry of what took place at Nilai UC last week...
We've just had the new college logo launched:
Creative rationale for the new logo design: "Forward-looking" to show that our thinking is always a step ahead. "Unique" to reflect our desire to adopt unconventional but effective strategies and programmes. "Organic" represented by the colour green, to emphasize our focus on enriching lives while maintaining high academic standards.
The logo was launched during the "Glitter & Dazzle" college dinner at the Sime Darby Convention Centre that was attended by almost 1,000 people (almost).
Glitter & Dazzle, 22nd August 2008 (Friday). The writer was too busy to take any picture that night. This picture- courtesy of a student and friend of the writer.
Outside the Sime Darby Convention Centre. It was a rainy evening last Friday, but a group of Nilai UC graduates managed to find their way to the Convention Centre last week in spite of all the hassle caused by the weather. Many thanks to these people for taking the trouble to turn up. You know who you are
A new way of saying "NO" just surfaced this year: "If my friends go, then I'll go". This same sentence came from three different guys who happen to know each other
That's why guys are known to be pretty good at covering up for each other, I guess. Let's see what other forms of "NO" will come up next year when the Alumni Office starts getting people to attend next year's event
Foyer area of the Convention Centre.
Inside the Grand Ballroom. I'm sorry I don't have a full shot of the ballroom as I wasn't the person who took this picture...Well, the "Glitter & Dazzle" event was lots of fun. Genervie Kam, Malaysia's celebrity violinist, was there to perform:
No, this wasn't the outfit that Genervie wore that night. She wore a nice pink evening dress that night. This picture was taken from another event.
The clock struck twelve and everyone had to quickly go home, or risk looking like dazed pumpkins the next day during the graduation ceremony, especially those involved in the graduation ceremony and had to be at the President Hall pretty early in the morning at about 7:00 a.m.
Nilai UC graduation ceremony, 23rd August 2008 (Saturday). This picture was taken by one of the graduates before the event started.
So many happy faces that day. And so many proud parents too. It was a memorable day for many college-mates who now have to go their separate ways to build up their careers.The Valedictorian gave a very touching speech that morning. When she cried on stage while thanking her parents (during her speech), I almost did too- not sure why. That's just too funny because she and I didn't cry at all when she was repeatedly rehearsing her speech the day before the graduation ceremony.
Well, that's about it for this year's grand dinner and graduation ceremony.
Here's an interesting promotional ad for one of our dear Australian Degree Programme graduates (Class of 2006)- Dave Tolo from Kenya:
Dave (in his favourite red Masai warrior attire) and his friend, Lumush, at the Shepherd's Centre Foundation orphanage in Malaysia.Greetings from under the beautiful African skies! It is my deep and sincere pleasure to welcome you to Homestay Tolo.

Crappy Holiday
The semester break is still on. However, unlike the academic system many years back, we now have new students coming in for the July intake as well. So, the college is not entirely empty all the time.
To those who are now on semester break and are not able to go home or have decided not to go home, I guess staying in college is turning into a somewhat tedious and unnerving affair, isn't it? I somehow hear complaints about the semester break being the most boring, stressful, so-totally-unhappening thing that could ever happen to a human being- worse than any natural disaster that had ever taken place in the world just this year.
Here I sit all alone... boring holiday... no one's around... why me?
You'd probably get so bored of the holidays you'd just feel like running somewhere, anywhere... and scream out loud: "IS THERE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS?"Suggested list of activities to while away the time with during the semester break:
Go play at the beach, make sand-castles or something like that...
Go camping. Hey, you think it's really that easy to set up a tent and start a fire?
Clubbing! Examples of places to visit: Laundry Bar (The Curve, Mutiara Damansara), The Loft @ Zouk (Jalan Ampang, KL), Heritage Mansion, 7atenine (Ascott Kuala Lumpur).
Work out at the gym! And show off your new image when your friends come back from the semester break!
Read something! Prepare for the new semester if you really have nothing better to do!
Shopping! Just window-shop if it's not within your budget. No need to show off.
Hang out with friends at the cinema!
Practise your photography skills at Nilai UC! This picture was taken by a student during the semester break! Very nice, isn't it?If you don't like any of the ideas suggested above, there's one final suggestion I can leave you with:
Lie down on any road located inside or outside the college and then wait for something reallllly exciting to happen... This picture was taken by a student during a certain public holiday (location: outside the Nilai UC college gate). If nothing happens, try and try again...The 90/10 Rule (by Stephen Covey- author of the best-selling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People)
What is this principle all about? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react.
What does this mean? Basically, we really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will arrive late, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic.
We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%. But how?
By your reactions.
You cannot control a red light. But you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you. YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example: You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened.
What happens next will be determined by how you react.
You curse. And you harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish her breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus.
Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit lane.
After a 15-minute delay and throwing a $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home.
When you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning!
Now why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is "D". But how many people would actually admit to their mistakes...
You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused you to go through a bad day.
Here is what could and should have happened: Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "It's OK. You just need to be more careful next time." Grabbing a towel, you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child boarding the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on what a good the day you are having.
Notice the difference?
Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different.
Why?
Because of how you REACTED.
You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reactions.
You're going through a boring holiday? Well, whether you want to look at a glass of water as being half empty or half full is entirely up to you...

Goodbye, Nilai
An empty, quiet hall two days after the final exams (Location: President Hall)This entry came from one student who just completed her studies at Nilai UC (she prefers to remain anonymous):
The exams have just ended last Friday. Many students have since headed home for the semester break.
I waited until Sunday to shift my things out from my room at HC block. My roommate had left earlier.
Four years of studying here at Nilai really caused me to accumulate lots and lots of things in my room!
Look at my room! Have to do so much packing and so many things to shift out! So tiring! (Note: This student's room was actually extremely neat and tidy before she started shifting and throwing her things all over the place while moving out. Chaotic final moments at the college)
Outside my room at the corridor area. Still not done with my packing yet!
Look at all my things at the ground floor! I hope I can fit everything into my friend’s car!
My other hostel-mate has a big car to put in all her things from her room. Will really miss the great times we had at college.My days at Nilai have finally come to an end! I’m going to miss my hostel room. I can’t believe I’m saying this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, while at the jungle, you’d keep on saying that life was boring- exams, assignments, lecturer gave so much work, so stressful… Now that you’ve left the jungle, you’re telling me that “I’m going to miss my hostel room, my assignments, exams and crazy lecturers". And you can’t believe you’re saying all these things, and then you get all emotional and sad about leaving Nilai and wish you could turn back time…
Sigh…… Absence does make the heart grow fonder sometimes. I feel sad too, but what to do- life goes on...
The semester break may have started already for many students. But to another group who have just completed their studies this semester, a new phase in their lives will be starting soon.
Flags of various nations (Location: President Hall; Flags: Courtesy of writer's friend)Many students who have completed their studies at Nilai UC have since returned to their home countries (or hometowns, to those local students).
Goodbyes may take place between roommates, friends or couples. Whatever it is, saying goodbye is not easy at most times, although it’s a necessary and normal thing that happens in everyone’s life. That’s part of growing up.
Friends who ended up crossing paths with one another would have to separate at certain points in the journey of their lives (Location: Kuala Lumpur International Airport; just about 20 minutes away from Nilai UC by car)
You might not feel like wanting to leave your friends behind. But your parents wouldn’t have wanted you to stay back in college forever!
There you go, heading towards a new chapter in your life.
As the years go by, you suddenly think back and remember: “My days at Nilai had ended so long ago. I do miss my hostel room sometimes. I can’t believe I’m saying this…”
Joie de vivre
Joie de vivre (from the French joie, "joy"; de, "of"; vivre, "to live, living"; "the joy of living") is a term sometimes imported into English to express a cheerful enjoyment of life; an exultation of spirit.
French.a delight in being alive; keen, carefree enjoyment of living. [Origin: lit., joy of living
] Kien Lim was one of our former Nilai UC American Degree Program students back in 2004.
Just last fall, Kien Lim asked Barry Pyle if he could work in his microbiology lab at Montana State University.
Since then, the MSU senior from Malaysia has analyzed bacteria that flew on the unmanned Soviet Foton-M3 spacecraft. He received $500 from the European Space Agency to travel to France where he explained his preliminary findings to more than 100 scientists attending an international conference on "Life in Space for Life on Earth." He also learned new lab techniques at the conference, mingled with researchers and met someone from the Japanese Space Agency who said he might be able to introduce Lim to prospective employers.How many people actually get to receive a free ticket to go to France and talk to more than 100 scientists in an international conference...... How I wish I could go to France as well... Such joie de vivre (now learn this phrase well so you can show off to other people)...
Kien Lim examined these bacteria samples that flew on the Soviet Foton-M3 spacecraft (MSU photo by Kelly Gorham).To read more about Kien Lim, click here.
