I saw this on www.idrewthis.org

I've most recently seen this in a lot of people's defenses of Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, who of course is facing a tough primary challenge based in part on his unpopular gung-ho support for the current unpopular war.

Lieberman is always defended on the grounds that he takes the stand he does based on "principle." As if it doesn't make any difference whether we think he's wrong; his constituents are not allowed to turn on him for a stand he's taken if his reasons are principled ones.

Results, apparently, mean nothing. What policies voters might actually want to see pursued, and their ramifications, take a backseat to the need to have leaders who are principled.

I can't say where this notion has its origins, but I've seen it before. I see it in the way both Republicans and most of the media were mystified that, when Bill Clinton's personal behavior evinced, in their view, a lack of principle, the public continued to support him. To many, it was evidence that the voting public itself lacked principles.

What it really showed was, while politicians and elite opinion makers may not view policy as important--they have money and security and are less likely to be significantly affected by as many policies as those with less of both--people lower down do notice when things are going well and when they're not. Under Clinton, the policies, by and large, seemed to be working, to most people, so they continued to support him.

This baffled those for whom everything is about politicians' "principle" and "integrity" and nothing is about the actual real-life effects of what those politicians actually do.

Of course, people lower down often fall for it, too; you can see it in the support commanded by John McCain, a man whose policy beliefs are significantly to the right of many of his supporters; those supporters will tell you they admire his principles and his honesty.

I suspect that in McCain's case, his "principles" are overrated. Lieberman, too. And, I think that if Bill Clinton is unprincipled, and he probably is, it's in ways that have nothing to do with infidelity.

But, let's put that aside, and ask one simple question:

Say you have two candidates. Candidate A has taken a stand clearly based on principle, in favor of eating babies. Candidate B opposes eating babies, but it's obvious he's only opposing it because polls show a majority of Americans are against baby-eating.

Are you going to vote for whoever's more "principled"? Or for the candidate who's going to enact the policy you actually want? (Can I presume near-unanimity on the not-eating-babies thing?)

I'm not saying principles are meaningless. I'd rather vote for a principled liberal than one who's only telling me what polls say I want to hear, of course; I'd rather have some faith that said candidate is going to continue to push for the causes I, a liberal, support whether or not it's politically expedient.

But I'd rather get those policies now, and precariously, than vote for someone who's never going to enact them under any circumstances. I'll take the poll-driven liberal over the principled right-winger, given that choice.

I admire principles. I vote for results.

I was also looking at a bunch of the cartoons, very good...

anyone have any of their own thoughts on this matter??

excerpts from my current gay marriage discussion

ForGod4Country::

Why the definition of marriage should not be changed from being a union between a man and a woman...

1. Children Hurt Most. Numerous studies have proven that being in homes where there is a mother and a father improves the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of chilren. Take this away and you will have children with MANY problems that I am sure the government will try to take care of and as we know, anything that the government gets its hands into will take the money in our pockets. It is a domino effect. If we think children are suffering from the affects of divorce in a family today, how much more in a situation tomorrow where a family is reduced to whatever man and man or woman and woman live together or just "cohabit" until they no longer choose to. There is a lot of evidence that, though not all, many homosexuals or lesbians do not truly stay loyal to one partner..."till death do they part".

2. Society's Foundation. The traditional family, which is the foundation of a society will be destroyed and perhaps eventually society will collapse. I could be wrong in this, but I believe that is part of how the Roman Empire collapsed, through gross immorality and homosexuality. There are historical records that prove this.

3. Forcing of Cultural Mores. Homosexuality, as a respected legal relationship, will be taught and their agenda will be forced in the schools. Homosexuals DO have an agenda and they will push it with every bit of leeway they are given. Marriage between a man and woman will be frowned upon as is already happening in Sweden, the Netherlands and other places where it is legalized. Many are unfaithful. Even when you forget the children, how will this affect those involved in these broken relationships? Broken relationships are all too well-known even between a guy and girl today, though, thank God, that has never happened to me. There is less of a motivation to remain faithful as there is no reason. It is often a facet of the lifestyle.

4. Adoption. Adoption laws will be obsolete, and since there will be many "motherless" and "fatherless" children, there will be no orderly, formal process with which one may choose or be eligible to adopt. It will be too normal a situation.

5. Changes in Foster Training. In order to avoid "discrimination" the education and process of foster training will drastically change and a couple will be forced to accept it in children and teens. There will be no need for moral training. A friend of mine in MD who works for a daycare was almost required to read certain books condoning this lifestyle to a child whose parents were of the same gender. She requested exemption from this and it was granted to her. Most certainly, if this lifestyle is legalized, she would not have been allowed that and would have had to quit her job, as many will be forced to do if this is legalized.

6. Failure of Healthcare System. Though the healthcare system is struggling, it will be stretched to the limit and perhaps be totally annhialated with all the "eligible" couples expecting their due share.

7. Failure of Social Security. Social Security will be stretched much the same way as the healthcare system.

8. Loss of Religious Freedom. There will NOT be total religious freedom. It's already happened in Canada where any messages shared on homosexuality are censored and a pastor will at least serve time in jail.

9. Setting a Poor Paradigm. Other nations are watching us and will follow in our steps and experience the same negative results.

10. Invitation for Other Sexual Perversions. Though I have said this before, I say it again, you legalize homosexuality and you will open the door for more sexual perversion, such as polygamy, beastiality and polaramy. Children could have 17 aunts or 23 grandfathers.

11. Reduced Population Growth. It weakens our nation, which is dependant upon its manpower to defend it. Our numbers would be greatly reduced since there would be less reproduction, though I do not say all.

12. Increased Mental Illness and Suffering. Those involved in these messed up sexual relationships whatever they be, will be hurting physically, mentally, spiritually, etc. Government institutions will be required to match the need of these people and children who will not be able to function as well in society.

13. Propagation of STDs. Aids will become a problem (as we are seeking to help Africa with), within our own borders. This will also raise healthcare costs and who knows how all these negative results will affect taxes and the economy.

14. Workplace Influences. Those who have opinions contrary to the homosexual lifestyle in the workplace, in churches, etc. will be silenced on the issue and there will be freedom for whom?

15. Gender and Identity Confusion. There will be further confusion in a gender's role and responsibility in society as well as those seeking to find their sexual "identity" and drowning in the process.

16. Unpopularity. Presently, the will of the people stands strong against this.

17. Role Models. Children will grow up without either a mother or father. They will have no pattern to follow. Most incarcerated men have little or no relationship with their fathers. There will be more incidence of unwanted pregnancies and criminal activity.

Well, these are some things. I am more than willing to hash them out with you, if you so desire. As a girl that comes from a father and mother who have been faithful to each other since the day they said, "I do", I cannot speak from experience as to how it would be to be a child living in the home of two moms and dads, and I seriously doubt whether you could either. Though this may not mean much to you, it won't help anyone in their relationship with the Lord as it is a sin that has placed MANY in bondage. I know the testimony of quite a few men who were set free from it as from ANY other sin. They now have families of their own and are trying to help society understand the truth behind such a life. Many of them having been abused in their young lives and found themselves unable to deal with it when they grew older. Do we want to protect abusers and keep the abused constrained by the rationalization that the law says it's ok?

This is a sin against nature, my friend. No where in nature will you ever find the same gender animal mating with the same gender. It is unnatural. Do you want to raise your children where there is no standard for morality in a relationship? Or be forced to allow your children to undergo the training on such sexual perversion, and call it school?

Me:

1. I would like to ask if these studies were done in comparison to single parent or compared to homosexual parents, because there is a GREAT difference. also, if we allow them to get married, then they will, they won't just cohabit. oh, your loyalty issue: the estimated divorce rate is 50%, 'til death do they part.

2. Gross Immorality and homsexuality, I would compare that to saying that bullet wounds are caused by bullets, and shirts, yes the shirt is involved, but if you don't have any evidence linking that part then you don't have much.

3. Wicca is accepted as a lifestyle, and legally allowed (religion related to "witches") but has it ever been forced on you in school?

4. I'm confused as to what you mean by this, but as an alternate adoption topic, there will be many more adopted children instead of having so many in Orphanages, which would save money from social services

5. you would rather that we teach children who have same gender gaurdians that their "parents" are immoral and wrong?

6. you're right, it's much better that "family members" who may have had extremely limited contact with people to make important health decisions instead of their life partners, and we should also not let their significant others to support them like we let straight married couples.

7. it's gonna fail as is right now without any help, we can't really hurt it any more.

8. first off, we already don't have "complete" religious freedom because preachers cannot force political beliefs, also most preachers think "fornicators" are immoral, but in most cases it is fully legal.

9. I won't answer this because I don't see negative effects.

10. reverse slippery slope-start regulating marriage and we will eventually be deciding who can marry who such as not allowing interracial or couples from different social classes.

11. Our Earth doesn't really have enough room for us to continue or growth safely for a long amount of time anyway, overpopulation needs to be regulated too.

12. most homosexuals are perfectly functional humans, and I would like to see evidence that these relationships hurt their members in these ways.

13. STD's are already running rampant in the US stop "fornicators" then you can try to stop homosexuals, also if we promote monagomous homosexual relationships then they will be just as safe from STDs as hetero monagomous relationships.

14. freedom for the homosexuals to say what they are instead of being forced to hide it in fear of being ostracised, and if they are saying things that would be offensive to homosexuals then they should stop anyway

15. I believe it would promote more exploration which could lead to greater understanding of within instead of more confusion other than the fact that women and men are pushing the boundaries of gender roles in society today, if we didn't then you probably wouldn't have gotten an education being a female as I believe you are.

16. the majority was against african american rights at the time, does that mean we shouldn't have gotten those either?

17. unwanted pregnancies? and I believe these facts are based on single parents, not same sex parents which is a GREAT difference, as I mentioned earlier

nothing in nature?

excerpt from this site(click on the words to go to the site)
Myth: Homosexuality is not "natural" -- that is, it does not exist in nature.
Fact: Any animal, including a human, is capable of responding to homosexual stimuli. Research suggests that homosexuality is almost universal among all animals and is especially frequent among highly developed species. There has been evidence of homosexuality in all human cultures throughout history.

Now we're in Hershey, Pennsylvania, should be getting back tomorrow...mmm, hersheys... but we had to go through New York two days ago, and it sucked, it took about 3 hours to go 10 miles... I'm just happy that I didn't have to drive.

I got a shirt at Hershey that says that Reese's peanut butter cups are "Peanutritious" (thought you might respect that one Chelsea, "kid tested...")

Brown seems like a great school as does Tufts, but I probably won't go to Middlebury (sorry Ms. Jousma but I'll probably be avoiding the Vermont school)

I can't wait to sleep in my own bed again... and get back on my computer

Edit: home now, finally, lots.... and lots...and lots.... of driving
