Fr. Tad is a priest of the Diocese of Fall River, MA. He earned his Ph. D. in Neuroscience from Yale University and studied for 5 yrs. in Rome where he did work in dogmatic theology and in bioethics, examining the question of delayed ensoulment of the human embryo. He has given numerous presentations on bioethics in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

This event is sponsored by the Saint Gianna Molla Respect Life Committe of Saint Matthew's Parish.

I know this is a school night, but I hope to see as many families there as possible! These are issues that effect us all as a people, not just the youth. I will be taking Emily and Lane. This is going to be good!!!! We need more young men and women to get involved in bioethics- laymen and laywomen and priests! Come and find out what it's all about- maybe you could someday join the battle to keep our nation morally and ethically sound. (Another good reason to keep those grades up!) God bless.

A Wayward Son Returns Home

He was deluded by paganism and lived a sinful lifestyle! Yet he became one of the greatest thinkers in Western history, and more importantly, a saint. St. Augustine (354-430) was a brilliant scholar and teacher even as a young man, but he was led astray by the false charms of a wayward life. He lived with a mistress and fathered a child out of wedlock, and deeply resented the prayers his mother, St. Monica, offered on his behalf.

Knowing that his mother wanted to accompany him when he moved to Rome, Augustine slipped away (telling her he was going down to the docks to send off a friend, when in fact he, himself, was departing). Heartbroken, Monica followed him to Rome and then to Milan, where she was encouraged to persevere in her prayers by the great bishop, St. Ambrose.

Ambrose's own spiritual and intellectual integrity prompted Augustine to re-examine his own beliefs, and during the spiritual crisis which resulted, Augustine heard a voice telling him to "take and read" the Bible. When he did so, he opened by chance to St. Paul's statement that "the night is far spent, and the day draws near ... therefore, put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the desires of the flesh" (Rom 13:12-14).

Upon reading this passage, Augustine finally experienced a sense of true peace and enlightenment, leading to a profound conversion. He was baptized a Christian on Easter, 387, and he and St. Monica rejoiced together in the short time remaining before her death.

Augustine returned to North Africa and was ordained a priest; in 396 was chosen as Bishop of the city of Hippo. He was a very successful pastor and an even greater theologian, playing a major role in overcoming the heresies of Donatism (an excessively harsh understanding of Christianity) and Pelagianism (the false belief that humans can save themselves without the help of God's grace). He helped develop the Church's teachings on grace, original sin, and the Holy Trinity. He is a Doctor of the Church. His autobiography, the Confessions is beloved by many, and his life is an inspiration to all who seek the merciful forgiveness of God.

Monica was born in 322 into a Christian family in Tagaste, in North Africa. Her parents selected a husband for her, a pagan named Patricius, who was a bad-tempered man and unfaithful to her. To add insult to injury, his mother, who taunted her and told lies about her, lived with them. But Monica ignored the indignities they heaped upon her and practiced good works instead, giving to the poor and helping the sick while still caring for her family.

Monica and Patricius had three children. The eldest son, Augustine, although a talented scholar, was a source of constant worry for Monica. She prayed constantly that he and her husband would someday join her in worship. Eventually, her faith and kindness were partially rewarded: her husband and his mother converted to Christianity.

But Monica's son Augustine seemed hopeless. Although she set a good example for him and did everything in her power to ensure he grew to be a good, decent man, she simply couldn't make him behave in a Christian fashion or understand the importance of proper conduct. He ran away from school, returned to the house and insulted Monica. She forced him out, but took him back after a voice told her, "your son is with you," which she thought meant with her in the faith. He took a mistress, had a son, and ignored his mother's protests.

Still, Monica did not give up. She realized she couldn't do everything on her own and wasn't afraid to ask others for help, even if it embarrassed her. Monica sought the help of her local bishop, who encouraged her. "It is not possible the son of so many tears should perish," he told her. Eventually, Monica turned to the Bishop Ambrose in Italy, who brought Augustine to God by appealing to his intelligence instead of his emotions.

Monica's goal eventually came to pass, in ways she didn't even foresee. Her son became so strongly drawn to the faith that he was eventually canonized - as St. Augustine, one of the Church's greatest teachers and philosophers.

Prayer:

O Lord who taught Monica to persevere for the good of her family, help me to be a better parent to my children. Help me to have patience with them when they misbehave and give me the strength to guide them gently to the right path. Permit me always to forgive their misdeeds and keep me from speaking harshly or punishing unwisely. Please help me to be a beacon of goodness for them as they grow to adulthood and to be a good example to them in all I say and do.
Amen.

Someone at Youth Group asked me what a Papal Encyclical is. For everyone’s benefit, the short answer is:

“An Encyclical is a letter written by the Pope and is usually addressed to Bishops and, occasionally, to all the faithful, or the Church in specific regions of the world. Encyclicals express the mind of the Holy See on matters of greater importance. An encyclical does address matters of faith and morals and demand the respect of the faithful. The title of the encyclical is taken from the first few words of the document. The first Encyclical of any new Pontiff merits special attention as it begins to allow theologians a “first look” and the mind and theology of the Vicar of Christ.”
