| Food for thought:
47 dead, including children, for the capture of one soldier.
2+ million *civilians*, including hospitals have no water or electricity because *militants* captured one soldier.
a
.25 ton bomb was dropped on a house, killing 9 members of a family in
gaza city to "weed out terrorists." that's seven children, two parents.
fruit plantations in palestine are being destroyed . . . areas where there are no trees around for miles.
they're starting to attack civilian areas of beirut.
beirut international airport is under attack by israel. The invasion of a country results because of the capture of two soldiers.
Visit: http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/070306...
for an editorial by Gideon Levy, a writer for the Israeli newspaper
Haaretz. The most important quote: "It is not legitimate to kidnap half
a government and a quarter of a parliament."
Israeli forces hit
central Beirut, striking the port and a lighthouse on a posh seafront
boulevard, where people stroll in the evening or jog in the early
mornings. It is a few hundred yards from the campus of the American
University of Beirut. At least 18 people, fleeing from the Israeli
onslaught, were killed in central Beirut.
The European Union is
criticizing Israel for its disproportionate use of force. Switzerland,
which is neutral in international affairs, is also separately speaking
out against Israel. Russia claims that Israel is overreacting. Israel's
neighours with which it has peace treaties, Jordan and Egypt, are
against the Israeli attack. ONLY THE UNITED STATES IS OPENLY SUPORTING
ISRAEL.
16TH JULY, 2006: 8 Canadians of Lebanese descent were
killed as Israel bombed their family village. Italian forces evacuated
around 300 civilians, Canada is sending commercial ships to evacuate
citizens, and the US State Department is finalizing a plan with the
Pentagon that will evacuate some 25,000 Americans to the Greek area of
Cyprus (for a fee), where they can board commercial airlines for Europe
or the States.
A bus full of tourists was turned away from a UN
base when they claimed refugee status; they were trying to escape the
Israelis bombing the highways.
The US blocked a pan-Arab
resolution on the Security Council (that's one of the first vetoes in a
long time!!!!!) demanding a cease-fire in Lebanon . . . THAT WAS THE
ONLY VETO. CHINA, RUSSIA, FRANCE, AND BRITAIN WERE FOR IT! This shows
that Israel is ONLY backed by the US!
MONDAY 17TH JULY: Israeli
attacks have intensified, wounding 40 people in the port city of Sidon
in Lebanon. It seems diplomacy is taking a stand; Israel agreed to a
cease-fire if the soliders are returned. Hundreds of cars drove through
Damascus, the capital of Syria, waving Hizb'allah and Syrian flags,
honking horns, Monday night (Syrian time). Iran has threatened
"unimaginable damage" to Israel if Syria is attacked, and the Iranian
foreign minister headed to Damascus for talks.
Israel is
preventing people working for Al-Jazeera news from covering the
situation accurately. Currently they are detaining a journalist . . .

Casualties: 170+ Lebansese dead, 24 Israelis dead, over 420 Palestinians and Lebanese (CIVILIANS) wounded.
The
Chief of Hizb'allah news appeared on CNN tonight. He pointed out that
peace is quite possible, IF THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT STOPS KILLING
INNOCENT CIVILIANS AND STARTS GOING TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE!
"Israel feels it can do what it wants. There is no international process to establish peace." -Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, Palestinian legislator.
TUESDAY 18TH JULY, 2006: Israelis say offensive could take weeks!
atleast 183 lebanese and 24 israelis are so far dead.
"we will not surrender.we will not surrender.we will not surrender." -lebanese civilian
WEDNESDAY,
19TH JULY, 2006: Israeli ground forces have entered Lebanon. Small
groups of soldiers are allegedly searching for tunnels and Hizb'allah
outposts. The Israeli government has denied that the incursion is an
attempt to occupy. Israeli officials anticipate that the war may last
up to a few weeks and the army's deputy chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Moshe
Kaplinski, said Israel has not ruled out deploying "massive ground
forces into Lebanon."
At least 237 people have died in Lebanon, 25 in Israel. Casualties are approaching six, perhaps seven, hundred.
The
Israeli army, in addition to targeting Hizb'allah outposts and centres
has attacked Lebanese military outposts, considered to be distinct from
Hizb'allah militants. "Lebanese Defense Minister Elias Murr denounced
the strike as a "massacre," saying the regiment's main job was to help
rebuild infrastructure. The Lebanese army has largely stayed out of the
fighting, confining itself to firing anti-aircraft guns at Israeli
planes. But Israeli jets have struck Lebanese army positions." (Ravi
Nessman, Yahoo News)
500,000 people have been displaced in
Lebanon. Over 750 rockets have been launched into Israel, causing many
Israelis to take cover in bomb shelters.
European and American
governments have begun the evacuation of citizens to the Greek side of
Cyprus, where they will be able to board commercial flights elsewhere.
After a small controversy, the US State Department decided to provide
American citizens/nationals free transport. "Military helicopters
ferried 120 Americans from the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, and 200 more
left on a ship chartered by Sweden to rush out nearly 1,000 Europeans.
About 180 British also left on a warship." (Nessman, Associated Press)
Attempts
to broker a diplomatic solution are underway, albeit difficult. Tony
Snow, spokesman for the White House, reiterates the US position. ""A
cease-fire that would leave intact a terrorist infrastructure is
unacceptable," Snow said. "So what we're trying to do is work as best
we can toward a cease-fire that is going to create not only the
conditions, but the institutions for peace and democracy in the region."
The
United States exercised its veto on the Security Council earlier this
week as Arab nations tried to put forth a resolution that called for
Israel to withdraw.
Condoleeza Rice is going to the area of
conflict to assist in a diplomatic solution, despite the ill-disguised
reticence of Israeli officials to have her.
FRIDAY, 21ST JULY:
The death toll and number of casualties is rising significantly as the
war enters its second week. The violence shows little sign of abating.
Condoleeza Rice, the US Secretary of State, will be going to the region
on Sunday. She plans on visiting Saudi Arabia and then proceeding to
the area of conflict.
Approximately 4,000 Americans have been
evacuated, and the goal of the government is to evacuate 4,000 more
today. Many have been evacuated via helicopter; the US Marine Corps
have entered solely for evacuation purposes. Canada, Sweden, and other
EU countries have been sending boats for their nationals as well. There
are still many foreigners trapped inside Lebanon however; Israel has
continued its program and bombed a road to Syria today, causing part of
a bridge to collapse.
Israeli troops are massing at the northern
border of Israel and Lebanon, and approximately 1,000 Israeli troops
will enter southern Lebanon. There are rumours of a larger Israeli
force entering the region. The Lebanese Prime Minister has responded by
stating that the Lebanese army (distinct from the Hizb'allah militia)
will fight Israeli troops in Southern Lebanon.
Israel, which has
enforced a complete air and naval blockade of Lebanon, has agreed to
allow humanitarian supplies to be sent into Lebanon, responding to
warnings of the United Nations and its Secretary General, Kofi Annan,
of a growing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
So far there are no reports of any major Hizb'allah militants being killed.
SATURDAY,
22nd JULY, 2006: Various blogs and internet diaries posted by Lebanese
trapped in Lebanon allege that Israelis are using illegal chemical
weapons.
Condoleeza Rice has rejected a solution for a
cease-fire and has decided that a long-lasting peace must be
established. She will not meet with the leaders of Syria or Hizb'allah
in her negotiations.
Israeli ground forces have advanced into
Lebanese territory, and have taken over the village of Maroun al-Ras,
backed by artillery fire and tanks. They have seized weapons and
attacked a nearby Hizb'allah post. Israel's stated goal is to weaken
Hizb'allah so the Lebanese army can enter southern Lebanon.
So far over 350 people have died; More than 1100 people were injured.
SUNDAY
23RD JULY, 2006: Israeli strikes against the Lebanese are still going
on strong. A bus carrying civilians fleeing the ground invasion in the
south was hit by airplanes today, killing three people and injuring
more. The United Nations has stated that billions of dollars will be
needed to repair the damage to the infrastructure caused by the almost
two week war.
Israelis have held onto the village of Maroun
al-Ras and do not appear to be advancing at this time. Diplomatic
efforts have had some results; the Israelis have agreed to allow an
international NATO forced to be placed at the border.
Israel attacked religious buildings in Sidon today, which is straining under the weight of 35,000 refugees.
The
official death toll, including those due to strikes and the bus are
375. 19 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 17 civilians have died
due to retaliatory rockets.
Two UN officials have been wounded,
one being Captain Roberto Punzo of Italy, by Hizb'allah gunfire.
"Several U.N. positions on the border have taken hits from Israeli
shells, and Israel said earlier this week that a U.N. post on its side
was hit by a Hezbollah missile — although the observer team said it was
a stray Israeli shell." (Ghattas, Associated Press)
According to
the World Health Organization, 600,000 civilians have been displaced as
a result of this war. $100 million is needed solely for humanitarian
aid. Tens of thousands of Westerners have been evacuated from Lebanon,
including 7,500 Americans so far.
Iran has stated that it will not join the war in its current stage.
Saudi
Arabian foreign minister Faisal al-Saud met with George Bush today for
two hours, asking him to create a cease-fire with Israel. Arab nations
are also asking Syria to end its support of Hizb'allah.
