"A Lack Of Color" - Death Cab For Cutie
And when I see you I really see you upside down But my brain knows better It picks you up and turns you around Turns you around Turns you around This may seem confusing at first. But I'm suspecting that it has something to do with the brain (scientifically speaking that is) inverting an image, so that we see them the right side up. This being said, Ben is studying his heart and mind. The heart tends to act on impulse, but the brain - being more rational - "knows better" and catches up with our instincts. By repeating "turns you around", I guess it could mean that the brain is dwelling on something full-heartedly. See? Science lessons do come in handy.
If you feel discouraged When there's a lack of color here Please don't worry lover It's really bursting at the seams Absorbing everything The spectrum's A to Z
Again, scientifically speaking, the way "color" works is absorbing all the colors, reflecting one. So, the lack of color is the intake of everything, under the surface, and there's only one representation. His lover might be doubting that his love for her, as there is a "lack of color"; he might be lacking interest or you know, whatever guys do. He, however, reassures how that he really does love her; and his love is actually, "bursting at the seams". Does everyone agree that Ben is a genius? Spectrum also evokes a wide range of color. I COULD JUST EAT HIM. :D
This is fact, not fiction For the first time in years All the girls in every girlie magazine Can't make me feel any less alone I'm reaching for the phone
The first line suggests that maybe he's told her lies before? So that he's clarifying that what he's feeling, saying now is true. (I'm not too sure about this.) But obviously, she's left him. : ( Nothing can make him feel any better about her absence, and now he's realized his mistake, and although she's had her reason to leave, he still wants her back. ...bitch. (kidding. :D)
To call at 7:03 And on your machine, I slur a plea For you to come home But I know it's too late I should have given you a reason to stay Given you a reason to stay Given you a reason to stay Given you a reason to stay
Well, this is quite straight-forward. He really misses her and wants her back; and out of desperation, begs ("plea") her to forgive him - even though it's too late. "Given you a reason to stay" is such a gorgeous line. The fact that he repeats this makes it hurt even more, and i suppose, if you've felt the same way, you'd understand the desperation.
This is fact, not fiction For the first time in years...
So I guess I was sort of right. The last line tells us that he hasn't really told much truth in years, but now he's come to his senses and his vulnerability has surfaced. Beautiful song, no? If you haven't heard it, you must must must. And all the other Death Cab songs. They have a new single out, "I Will Possess Your Heart". Go go go! :D Leave a comment about your idea of the song, if you wish.
