| I Think I Know Why They Call it Seward.......And it's probably the smell.
Ok, maybe not, but I thought of that Title-line, best delivered with nose firmly held, probably 10+ years ago, back when my cleverity was burgeoning and I was short for my age group. But, speaking of Seward, I just got back from that little tourist-driven port-town 2 hours from Anchorage, where I and 2 friends, Jesse and Dusty, hiked, and camped, then hiked and camped some more, and then hiked back, and for a finale, we drove back Anchorage. 123 miles is a bit much to hike if you want to get back in time for church Saturday evening.
Left is Jesse, when he hiked most of the trail in the winter, on a bride we crossed.
On the right is Jesse and Dusty, in a candid pose.
Overall, the hike was pretty sweet. A large portion of it goes along the shore, and at one point we had to wait about 4 hours for the tide to peak, and then recede. It's quite late, so I'll quickly sum some fun things up: We almost died because a drunk guy started sawing a tree right next to our tent with a chainsaw, but Jesse made him leave with some highly articule and voluminous arguments. Dusty and I also almost died as we climbed up a large, steep hill, and on our way down Dusty stumbled upon (thankfully not In) some pre-fossilization corprolite. Lastly, to avoid bears invading our tent, I took all my opened food packages (gorp, jerky , and the such), stuck 'em in a bag, and placed the bag inbetween a couple logs. Come morning all my stuff was ripped open and ransacked. Thankfully, it was just ravens (They must have been ravenous!), but it was still very annoying.
In other, more lasting, news, I'm now a college graduate. Well, technically. I got my 2 year degree -an Associate of Arts (prettymuch the collegiate GED)- which is what my Mom has. Therefore, I'm now educationally qualified to give birth to 7 children, run the books for both a family, a family business, and a church, and to homeschool all those children. Now I just need a hard-workin' breadwinner... hahaha!
Really though, I'm planning on pursuing at least a bachelors degree (and odds are that'll also be my marital status when that happens, if current trends are any indicator), I'm just not sure what to major in exactly yet. So, I'm making the only reasonable choice: take some time off, and run a marathon.
But yeah, it really is late, and morning comes early. Like, 10ish. AM. that's rough...

| Today! Today, I finally beat my Dad at ping pong. This is amazing considering he used to beat me left-handed, and beat me handily at that. Since I haven't updated since last June, I thought I'd mention that I'm workin' as an Resident Advisor in the UAA dorms, and after this semester I'll either have or be quite near an associate of arts. What I really want is a degree in linguistics, but UAA has a sad lack thereof.
In other news, I'm taking Dance Appreciation, which is almost rehabilitory for me because I never thought much of dancing. Turns out it's sweet! My sister Emily convinced me to take some Lindy-Hop lessons with her and a bunch of my friends, and I'm havin' a blast! On a related note, here's a picture of me with a baby at a wedding in NY last November: So, that little guy is prettymuch my surrogate-nephew, Stephen Ray. I call him Stevie. His parents dance a lot too.
All in all, life is pretty good right now, with the usual glut of friends I don't get to see often enough, responsibilities like class and RA stuff, an internet shopping addiction (I've been told I should invest in REI because of people like me), and a rockin' family I love being around, but don't necessarily Have to be around. Farewell all ye who read this!! -Dan
| June of twenty ought-sevenHey howdy hey folks! I recently made an odd decision to test my mettle in an annoying way: cease all bloggal communication for a month. Optimally this'll be a good and fun time of personal growth and getting back into other uses of my time, though potentially I'll feel lonely and isolated without my constant digital social-circle fix. That would be telling, and of a negative, I daresay. While unpleasant, that would actually be a good thing. Therefore, this should be a valuable experience, either way.
Also, with the time I'll not be spending on these things, I'll be able to read more, bike more, spend more time w/ friends & family, watch more TV, and maybe even do my chemistry homework --maybe.
So, my June will be chock full of no myspace, facebook, or xanga, but rather chock full of sunlight, action, soccer, socialism (not in the political sense, but the "being-with-people" sense), and bikin' to the oldies and to the newies.
If you must needs get ahold of me for something important, or just want to banter some, I'll still be checking my email; What can I say, I still do have some legitimate internet communicating to do. My addresses are mrspifty at yahoo dot com and imoftefound at hotmail dot com. And if you really really really need to, I can be reached by dialing the magical numbers 2, 3, 0, 1, and then the word "bag". In the 907 area code.

| Hola mi amigos! Events up here in Alaska move on apace, and I thought it fitting to inform you of a couple noteworthy happenings.
Firstly, I'm going with my youth group to Mexico on an m-trip in July! Down there we'll build 11 x 22 cement-floored, slant-roofed 4-walled palaces for impoverished folks. In the interim, I've been enjoying being part of a unified group working for/at something bigger than ourselves again; It's been awhile, and I've missed it. Secondly, I got to go shooting with a couple awesome friends. Those friends are the lightning bolt and black coat. That's me in the center, looking intense.
While out shooting, I did this:
Understandably, I now really want to buy a gun. I'm thinking a semi-auto .22 with a scope, which is what I used to ruin that glass vial's world.
Thirdly, I have finally gotten my driver's license. Having taken a defensive driving course in which they taught me some precise methods of driving, I now see driving errors everywhere. Probably a blessing and a curse. Still no car, but I can help my Dad out even better by driving his stepvan to jobs that merit 2 trucks. Well, here's my license photo; I think you'll agree it's among the best license photos ever, second only to Calvin's Dad's.
What's more, outdoor soccer season is coming very soon!!! I am enthused greatly!!
And what's even more, I'm finding myself writing shallow guy-type blogs loaded mostly with news snippets and fact updates along with some charm, but mostly lacking in substance. Also, I'm very '"white,"' especially when shooting left-handed/eyed, as this picture proves:
I was using the hat as a blinder for my right eye, since I lack the facial dexterity to close just it.
Well, I miss most of you guys, and those I don't I probably still see regularly. Have a one! -Dan E.
