Dear friend,

I am writing to ask for your support of four candidates who are running for election to the Greater Hilltop Area Commission. The Area Commission election will be held on June 24, the same day as the Hilltop Bean Dinner. Voting takes place between 10:00 and 3:30. You can vote at the Bean Dinner or at the Hilltop Library at 511 South Hague Avenue. You do not need to be registered to vote in Franklin County to vote in the Area Commission election. You need only reside in the Greater Hilltop area, the area bounded by I-70 on the north, I-270 on the west and south, and the railroad tracks west of Harrisburg Pike on the east. Below is information about each of the four candidates I believe deserve your vote on June 24.

Gary L. Baker, II is the current Area Commission chairman and has been a member of the Commission for nine years. He has continued the tradition of building advantageous relationships with Columbus City Council and the administration and city staff perpetuated by recent Commission chairmen Daryl Hennessy and Patrick McLean. He also serves as president of Friends of the Hilltop and the Greater Hilltop Area League for the Arts. Gary also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Hilltop Business Association. He is a well known and well respected advocate for the Hilltop. His commitment to the Greater Hilltop area is unquestionable. He is frequently overheard telling people “the West Side is the best side” and talking about working together to bring about a “Hilltop Renaissance.”

Justin Boggs is the co-coordinator of the Ogden Avenue Blockwatch. He has organized neighborhood clean ups, meetings, and the annual National Night Out celebration held by his blockwatch. He also publishes the blockwatch newsletter. Justin was a member of the steering committee that organized the Hilltop Safety Symposium held at West High School in May. He won the Columbus Dispatch Jefferson Award in 2005 and was also a recipient of a Kohl’s Kids Who Care Award in 2005. Justin is a student at Columbus State Community College majoring in liberal arts and works as a Science Presenter at COSI, where he had previously volunteered for several years. Justin has lived on the Hilltop all his life.

Joe Decker is a writer who lives in Westgate with his wife, Kristi, and daughters, Jocelyn and Sophia. In addition to volunteering at Westgate Alternative Elementary where his daughters attend school, he also coaches in the St. Mary Magdalene Summer Baseball League. Joe was brought up in a family with a strong sense of community and dedication to service. He is hoping to be able to further serve his community through election to the Greater Hilltop Area Commission.

Karen Whitman has lived on the Hilltop for more than fifty years. Karen attended Westgate and West High Schools. She spent most of her career working in the Greater Hilltop area. In addition to owning property and businesses in the community, Karen was a real estate agent for almost fifteen years. Karen is the current vice chair of the Greater Hilltop Area Commission and has served the Hilltop as a member of the Commission for fourteen years. She is currently the executive secretary for the Hilltop Business Association. Karen lives on Eakin Road and hopes to continue serving on the Greater Hilltop Area Commission to help bring additional improvements to the community.

Please vote for Gary, Justin, Joe, and Karen on Saturday, June 24. Every vote counts. In previous years, seats have been won or lost by a handful of votes. This year’s election is even more important, because there are at least four other candidates running for seats on the Commission. Voting in this year’s Area Commission election is critically important to keep the Area Commission moving forward effectively as it strives to help make and keep our community the very best it can be.
