| The St. Paul eXperience - Marching on the Xcel Energy CenterYesterday was probably a day that I will remember for a long time. I never was apart of a protest or anti-war march, but with the RNC in town, I figured its the season for liberal protesting! ... Of course, I wanted to do it more for the experience of actually BEING in a March, because face it; I didn't grow up in the 70s. I've never done this kind of thing before.
All in all, it was supposed to be a Capitol Hill concert, and for most of the day it was. I didn't actually attend it, although I heard that Anti-Flag and Wookiefoot were playing. ... It was only when I received the call from my friend Brendan about Rage Against the Machine performing a FREE CONCERT at the capitol steps was when I decided to head across the river into St. Paul with two others. When we got there, there were so many people standing around waiting for them to come on, and about 3 groups of riot cops standing off to the side. ... I felt so much energy in everyone at that moment. Everyone started shouting "Fuck you! I won't do what you tell me!" over and over again! At one point, everyone looked over toward a group of riot cops and started waving, shouting 'Hello!', in kind of a mockery, and people started laughing.
Apparently it turned out that the riot police were not letting Rage play because the permit for playing had ended at 7pm, and people were starting to get anxious, shouting 'Let them play!'. So instead, Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello decided to take up megaphones and do a street a capella of their songs! ... After a few songs, the band started waving in the direction of the Xcel Center, and before I knew it, or even suspected, it turned into a protest march!
I was half-excited, half-scared throughout the entire thing. There was so much high energy and so many people shouting that I couldn't help but pull a big grin and join in, but at the same time, there were so many riot cops around. I remember that two days ago (the 1st of September), there was alot of sabatoge and havoc going on at that protest march. I saw plenty of youtube videos of people getting pepper sprayed, clubbed with batons, and rioters going around and causing random acts of sabatoge. I thought it was rather entertaining watching it over the internet, but never thought the concert would turn into a march. Alot went on, but nothing so horrible. People were standing on top of bus stops and hanging from street lights, getting pictures and video footage of the protest. To the right of me were people shouting that common protest mantra ("What do we want!?" "Justice!" "When do we want it?" "Now!"). Infront of me were people holding Barrak Obama signs and two people with communist union flags, and one with an anarchy flag behind me. ... So many people from so many ends of belief voicing themselves in a single unit. I couldn't help but enjoy it! =)
Just as we turned the corner of McNally College of Music, a bunch of people started rushing away from a group of riot cops. Being a tall guy, I turned to look, and the riot cops started barging into the march spraying people. I decided to join the flee, but I was stopped by a group of cops on bicycles, holding them up like a wall, telling everyone to get back and continue down the route. I heard people shouting "Why are they spraying people!!? We didn't do anything!". ... I understood it enough to know that all it takes is one angry rioter or one angry cop to end up with people arrested and protesters rubbing their eyes in pain. Both sides are fearful of one another, so escallation is not uncommon at these sort of things. We continued and I explained what I saw to my friends. At that point, I was keeping mindful of all trajectories leading away from the protest rally, just incase.
We eventually arrived near the Xcel Energy Center, and the entire street beyond, and the Xcel center itself was blocked off by a large fence. We looked up and saw cameramen, and even snipers atop of the Xcel center and St. Bascillica. I looked to the right, and even exit streets were blocked off (except for the way we came). We eventually stopped, and everyone was beginning to press against the fences. I even heard someone shout something ironic, along the lines of 'Everyone! Get in the 'Freedom Cage'!". We did feel very caged, like the purpose of the march route planners (the ones who had the final say, who were the city planners, so in this case conservatives being that it was St. Paul) had intended that all of the protesters wind up in some sort of large cage. At this point, my friends and I got a somewhat uneasy feeling and we decided to leave. Some old man managed to throw a communist propoganda paper in my face, so I look at it for th emost of two seconds before giving it back.
Our walk was actually longer than our walk toward the Xcel Center. The police designated an exit route which actuall extended around I94, which was quite a walk indeed. We walked up the steps to the Health Center, walked around to the other side of it, and proceeded to walk across the bridge toward the Capitol building. We noticed that ALL of the cars line up on that bridge were police minivans (SWAT members. There obviously wasn't enough vehicle support for them.) The line of police vehicles extended for about a half-mile (no lies!) Suddenly, their lights turned on, and all of the vans started heading toward the Xcel Center, one by one. My friends and I looked at eachother and we started wondering. Something must have happened and people must have started getting arrested. We started joking about how it was good that we left when we did. We drove back toward Minneapolis, and my friend decided to stop at Burger King. We started shouting protest mantras into the speaker for fun, and the employees started laughing.
At the end, we continued driving on University Ave toward Dinkytown, and I managed to notice the Witch Hat Tower, and I suggested that we could take a stop at Prospect Park, because neither of them have ever seen it before. ... The Witch Hat tower was a historical landmark in the westernmost point in St. Paul, which is the highest geographical point in the Twin Cities. It overlooks the Minneapolis skyline, and got its name from its architechture (the top of the tower is shaped like a Witches Hat). We parked, walked up the pathway toward the base of the Witch Hat Tower, and overlooked Minneapolis. Rather stunning view. ... I've seen the skyline before, but never during the night. ... My friend started commenting about how Time Magazine has labeled Minneapolis has having the most beautiful skyline in the country, with New York and Pheonix as runner-up. ... Some people wouldn't agree upfront, but if they could stand from that point and look at Minneapolis, they would change their mind very quickly.
I've always liked both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Very diverse cities, despite being a river apart. St. Paul is considered the westernmost Eastern city, and Minneapolis is considered the easternmost Western city (based on architecture, and their positions on either side of the Mississippi River.) The best of both worlds, right smack in the center of the Midwest. ... I might not be from St. Paul, but it is as much my city as Minneapolis is, and I actually enjoyed walking on the protest march. | | |
| Creativity and Spiritual Development
Self-Development:
-X- Creativity and Spiritual Development -X-
...
“The creative person is both more
primitive and more cultivated, more destructive, a lot madder and a lot
saner, than the average person.”
-Frank Barron
...
Since
the beginning of time, the concept of creation has been the single
fundamental behind the becoming of our very existence. It matters not
what belief system you stem from, which deity or deitys you have been
brought to acknowledge or worship, or what stance in politics,... every
human being is gifted with a creative, as well as a destructive
potential.
Ever since mans awakening, it has searched for a sense of purpose
in life, and perceived in a thirst of discovery the world around them.
Our creative imagination is about as diverse and plentiful as the
individual thoughts of every host within the harmonic collective of
cosmic entities. It cannot be measured. It cannot be counted. ... and
yet it can be perfectly conceived by each individual in their own
individual way!
It is a perfect fusion of intelligence and awakening, and has more
precedence to our own spiritual development than many realize. It is
the art of expression, through art, music, personality, inspiration,
intuition, insight, and is the most influential part of our growth as
both material and immaterial beings. We all possess the impulse within
us to reach out with mind and body; reach out of our own consciousness
into the minds of others; into the unknown, spiritual beyond, in the
hope that something, man or spirit, will answer back.
What is Creativity?
It is that hard-to-define quality, and to those who channel this
talent through mere instinct,... you know it best when you see it with
your own eyes, or hear it with your own ears. In general, creativity is
the ability to combine ideas in a unique way or to make fresh and
useful associations among ideas. It means "thinking outside the box".
When one usually hears the word 'creative', we tend to think of
artists and poets, actors and musicians- people whose life's work come
up with new and inventive ways of thinking. But this is not the only
venture for the creative mind to travel. Creativity can thrive in
absolutely every aspect of life, and the most recent research is
showing that it is quite often the secret ingredient that helps
individuals achieve their goals, build rewarding relationships, and
conceive the essence of our own consciousness.
The mechanics of creative potential, much like metaphysics and
spiritual potential, have long been a mystery to science. Historically,
it was conceived to be a component to intellect, but psychologists and
researchers alike are now unveiling many more truths behind the power
of creativity. It is also a component to 'mental flexibility' (how one
can ponder and entertain ideas without the need to practice them in
real-time), and how efficiently one can transition between one task and
another.
We have been bestowed this ability, in its own infancy, since OUR
own infancy (meaning that we through the earliest union of body and
spirit have birthed an approach to the understanding of the world
around us and the consciousness of something beyond what is seen and
heard).
Children are naturally creative. They're constantly dreaming up
new ways to play, make art and communicate. They are in a world free of
constraints on their creativity. They have not yet learned to judge
themselves by the products of their inspiration—they just do and enjoy.
And that is the essence of creativity: Freeing yourself from judgment
and self-imposed limitations, and allowing your imagination to roam and
yourself to enjoy what you're doing. But on top of that, there are some
time-tested techniques for turning on your inner light bulb.
[i]
Unlocking your creative potential is a great way to maximize your
productivity and performance in any situation, especially one that
requires work or discipline. You'll find new and better ways of doing
what you do. And developing your creative spark keeps you much more
interested and engaged in what you are doing. If you practice the art
of thinking in alternatives, you will be less likely to give up when
things are not going as planned and more likely to come up with new
solutions.
Just as creativity can help define yourself, it can help define your
view of others. Channeling your creative powers can help you avoid
unhealthy patterns of unnecessary conflict, and see in a wider
perspective of viewpoints, analyzing motives and natures in order to
understand others on your walk through life.
Creative Tension?
The most common mistake that artists and the everyday-man make is they
fail to understand the idea of "Creative Tension." This is where you
withhold the idea and allow all of the habitual notions or variety of
methods previously used to emerge and "run through them." To hold a
conflicting idea in your mind without immediately seeking to resolve it
is what allows "insight" to emerge. ... Patience is key! If we become
impatient and try to resolve the conflict quickly - we fall to our
habitual perceptions and approaches and let them try to resolve it. In
this - we receive the same results every time.
Creative Tension can be thought of as being in the presence of a
situation that would normally "trigger" a response, or create an
urgency to do something . . . but instead we simply sit quietly and
observe without feeling compelled to do anything as a result. Once we
step outside of our habitual tendencies in response to a particular
stimulus - a new perception can arise in place of the old tendency. But
if, instead, we feel pressured to resolve the conflict - we will
respond with the habitual emotional reaction that's being activated in
us. This will simply repeat an old pattern. We will respond - express -
the same idea over and over in the same way.
Inspired ideas - allow us to see something brand new in a common
situation. They usually indicate a different meaning that creates a
pathway of new behavior or expression. When we feel inspired, we feel
passionate - excited. Intuitively we have a sensation of expanding and
"rushing" forward into it. This is in a smaller sense, an experience of
bliss or nirvana. It's very pleasing to the mind and body, as well as
our luminous body.
The "Four Stages" of the "Creative Process"
When we look at the creative process undertaken by all artists,
inventors, scientist and "creative professions" - they have a common
thread of what we can say is 4 primary stages of the process itself.
These stages are dynamic, yet follow a sequence that produces a new,
fresh and novel approach to a common held idea with a history of
previous expressions.
Stages:
1- Preparation:
This is the initial and perhaps longest stage as it is the time when we
become "exposed" to the general field that the creative process is
engaged in. If I am a "painter" I must study painting, styles,
techniques, genre' and a select group of painters to thoroughly to get
an idea of what has "come before" in terms of historic or "already
created ideas." I must also develop my skill at painting, establish my
style, and gain a fundamental knowledge of my subject.
2- Incubation: This is
where I capture a basic idea and "sit with it" in a relaxed state of
mind. I define the approach of my inquiry, which will begin shaping the
expressive format. This is the stage where "Creative Tension" is
established in what appears as "conflicting aspects" of it's essential
nature as a kind of paradox. Instead of seeking to quickly resolve the
conflict - which would be done with my "habitual" tendency or methods -
I simply sit quietly with the conflicting state of my subject, allowing
common ideas to pass by and empty my mind.
3- Creative Insight:
By sitting with an idea, and allowing all the immediate (usual) ideas
to run through my mind - I create a kind of space for a brand new
notion, approach or quality to emerge and become apparent as a form of
"Insight." This insight is outside of my "habitual approach" and is not
a repetition of what has been expressed previously by other artists.
This insight comes as a sudden realization of a fresh approach to what
may be a common subject. I then "capture" this insight and begin
allowing it to expand, unfold or present itself to me.
4- Manifesting:
Once I recognize the nature of my insight - I "capture" it, hold it in
my mind and begin bringing a clarity to it it that will lend itself to
an "action" of some sort. I "create" it by defining it in form. I use
it to in-form and shape a representation of the essential nature of the
inspired notion that motivates it.
This same idea can be used in forming new paths of expression in your
everyday life. When you are in a situation that normally would trigger
a response (created internal conflict) do not indulge in your typical
reaction - but simply allow it to run through your mind and realize
what your "typical reaction" would be. Simply witness it without
judging it or attempting to repress it. Allow all of the possible
reactions to enter your mind as possible expressions to the emotion
that has been activated in you. By doing this you will "exhaust" all of
your previous, habitual methods of expressing yourself in response to a
particular event or behavior. Once all the old, "known" tendencies are
emptied out of your thoughts . . . . only then . . . can something new
emerge. This usually comes by way of what is typically called an
in-sight. Insights are inspired ideas that almost seem to be "given" to
you, or downloaded into your mind instantaneously. This inspired
insight will be a fresh way to respond to an old stimulus. In this
moment . . if you chose to "act on" the inspired idea . . . you will
express yourself in a brand new way, creating a new experience of
yourself in relationship to others or your everyday circumstances.
Creativity According to Spiritual Development
If the understanding of how crucial creativity can be to ones spiritual development has not been met yet, then consider this.
Everyone is born with a pre-programmed sense of creativity in them, and
much of this is stemmed from the creative potential not only of the
mind, but of their spirit as well. Although many people go about their
lives expressing their creative potential without understanding the
spiritual, utilizing creative powers can develop the awakening
individual in the taming of their restless increase of their
'bio-energy', and can help make ones path straighter.
Just as creativity helps the spirit, the opposite is also true. The
practice of simple relaxation and meditation techniques can increase
the number of new ideas that can develop. This helps us become relaxed
and receptive, yet remain alert in times that require discipline.
To channel creativity is to take pleasure in life's infinite possibilities.
To clarify your mind in times of uncertainty. To embrace your creative
abilities begins a cycle of energy you can channel in whatever way you
wish.

| Simply MusicSo, I had just returned from a concert performed by one of my good friends bands.
The thing is, I haven't seen him in such a long time (well, since college ended) and he was really surprised to see me show up. I received a text from him about the show,... something he managed to send out to anyone he deemed would be interested on his contact list, and I decided that I would show up randomly. He was rather pleased, and we walked out back and talked about how summer has been. I also got to see one of my future roommates there as well. We were all talking about how badly we wanted college to start again, and how much fun this year will be. I'd say this year will be the most epic, and that is certainly a quality of potential memory that I deem to treasure closely. The concert whas phenomenal. I must say, compared to the majority of people who rant about their "friends band"'s here and there, with no form of exaggeration do I say that their band has abolute potential to make it somewhere if they plan their timing right. ... Before and afterward, we all chilled out back between sets (of the other bands), and talked to the other musicians. ... Something I managed to realize is that so much of the time, whenever I try to talk about the deeper side of music, such as emotions/sensations behind certain musical keys, distinguishing musicianship from showmanship, aspects of the music business, or even deeper things non-related to music, the general response I received from many was that they never think about any of these things. They just play.
Of course, no musician is required to know any of the above, despite how helpful or indifferent this knowledge is, but I sometime don't seem to understand why some people never look as deeply into their lives via philosophical viewpoint; they merely just do. Something within their pre-programmed instinct guides them on the path that they lead, but none of them stop to ask why,... or perhaps they do, but come up short of an answer. None of it is required to achieve anything, except a sense of consciousness. Yet, I seemed to misunderstand in thinking that everyone, in some way, is seeking that sense of higher consciousness. Perhaps they can achieve it through the music they play, but I myself have never had some systematic purpose that I recite morning noon and night because it was my one sole purpose and joy in life. ... How interesting it would be to have a life as simple as that. ... I wonder.
I've always had this urge to let others know that their life can be redefined with just a few words of wisdom, but on some level not all of them require a more complicating state of thought. Perhaps the simplicities of their function and the creativity that pours through them are all that some people need. ... Its hard for someone like me to comprehend, but I do inquire the possibility.

| A different dream... (nights earlier)
Amiss some kind of important mission within some tall
building/castle, trying to run away from –blank-, I had swam across a river,
finding myself at a farm, where I was supposed to tell the owner, who was the
father of one of my dead counterparts, and address to him that his daughter was
dead.
As for the rest of my dream, I was trapped within some
village, being charged with a crime of some sort, and they refused to let me
leave. I was being threatened with death, so I decided I had to find a way out.
… What become of my adventure? More video games, it seems like. This time, I
was imitating some form of Zelda, trying to find my way out of a building which
held the only exit out of the village. I irritated one of the village elders,
and decided that it would be best to flee from him because he was about to call
the guards. Except I wasn’t looking for my way out. I was looking for a save
point. Like I had remembered in come earlier dream that they were located in
the bathroom area of the facility (I feel that most of my dreams are damned to
be like this because of my childhood obsession of video games. A shame that it
reduces meaning to all dreams.) … Upon searching the mens bathroom, it seemed
ridiculously huge, and there was a rap concert going on inside (with a group of
Juggalos located on a platform up in the rafters). I decided I would take the
concert as an opportunity to find the save point, so I began crawling through
stalls and over stalls trying to find it. … Couldn’t find it, at all. Instead I
wandered into a backroom, while the concert now sounded more like a hip-hop
station for some reason, and I drifted awake.
| | |
| Interesting Dream (at 9:00/8:00 central!)
I dreamt that I worked at this enormous facility much like a
classy or hotel or casino. There were many parts of it. It felt like I was
living the life of an entertainer of sorts, like it was a big TV show episode
(kinda like ER with its multiple themes and characters).
I was watching a newscast about The Rock, (wrestling was on
that night, performed at the facility) getting as many people to come down and
riot for the sake of Obama. There was some critical security situation that
threatened closing down the wrestling match, because The Rock was getting
everyone riled by saying all these negative things about George Bush. The
newscasters commented, saying that this would not look good for his career.
At one moment in the dream, I had to make my way into a
closed shop stall without the guards looking, and I took some merchandise
(bumper stickers). I came out, and realized they put another stall in front of
it and a bunch of people were gathered. I thought they would notice me coming
out of a closed shop, so I decided to act like that shop wasn’t supposed to be
there, and that this whole thing was ‘ridiculous’.
I left, realizing that the guards might have noticed on the
security cameras, so I became a little paranoid, at one part, a few fighter
planes flew over, where I thought one of them was going to fire on me.
I had a mental map of what the entire facility looked like,
but I don’t think I ever traveled the entire thing.
One part resembled a narrow hallway, and I was looking out
toward the open ocean. Strange that it was raining, but there were barely any
clouds out. I peered out the whindow, wondering why, before going across to
peer out of the opposite window. No clouds, open ground, and slight rain. I
looked up and realized that there was a strange weather pattern: a line of rain
clouds right above my periphery. I thought that was a little amazing…. Plus I
noticed a few storm clouds coming in from the distance.
I decided to wander to the open lobby/restaurant area (I
guess I was sitting there cause I was injured. I was thinking deeply about my
friend David Lee Johnson (he broke into the stall with me, but had gotten
caught I believe),… and I was supposed to arrive at court as a witness in a few
hours. I decided to myself, sitting there, that when the time came, I could
play the “charismatic entertainer with a heart of gold” while on-stand, and
probably get the jury so engrossed in the humor that they just let him off the
hook.
As I was sitting in the restaurant (I was sitting on the
seaside edge, with a long row of windows bordering in a circular fashion. VERY
classy place! Warm lighting, blue carpet, decent amount of space…. Rather
detailed for a dream). … Another of the entertainers, an old man with white
hair, sunglasses, a colorful suit, and a cane, came up to me and pointed to
me,... saying “You’re that guy!”… He was rather jovial, and I got up and
greeted him, and he asked me (by imitating body movements) what a certain
wrestling move was called. (apparently, there must have been some part of the
dream where I had been wrestling, and it was on TV. … I was like a celebrity at
this place,… and people knew me like I had always been doing things on TV ….
RATHER awesome!) I tried to explain to him that it was known as a ‘Torture
Rack’, but he was distracted by his manager.
I wandered a bit, and a guy,… an average weight, bearded,
every-day-Joe kinda guy,… who was with his wife, eating at one of the tables,
and he noticed me and said ‘Whatup?” … I smiled and said “Pretty Good.” … He
nodded, and I stood there for a few more seconds, realizing what I said, and
smiled in humor. The other guy smiled to and decided to play along by saying,
“How are you?”,… so I could say “Nothing.” … I gave him a pointed/shooting
gesture to him, as to say ‘Cya’, and I decided to wander further.
… And that pretty much takes me to the end of my dream.
Rather vivid!
