Anniversary At NobuToday was my anniversary. That means I get to eat something delicious at a nice restaurant in NYC ^_^ Yay for me. This year we went to Nobu in Tribeca. This was the first time Ive been there although Ive been meaning to go for a long while now. I heard it was a bit overrated. Sooo.. tonite I just got back from eating there. We had the midrange Omakase menu from the menu which ended up being about 8 courses in total including dessert (which is imperative to a great meal). So here are pics of what we ate and comments thereafter because i am a self appointed food snob (proud of it) and therefore have much to say in regards to food.

These were the first cold appetizers that we had . The top is a monkfish liver pate with a sweet miso sauce and edible gold leaf. The latter is a toro tartar with ossetra caviar and a wasabi ponzu sauce. There are two of each course because I just dont eat raw fish and Howzan does. The conclusion is that not only do i not eat raw fish.. i dont quite enjoy liver, or pate for that matter. The sauce was pretty good but not strong enough to cover the somewhat fishy taste of the liver pate (i have super tastebuds and i probably taste things that i shoudlnt be tasting so dont think this as a bad review)

Next was a slightly seared kumamoto oysters on the half shell with a sesame oil, citrus sauce. Granted Ive never had oyster before so i couldnt quite decide whether i liked it or not. Mine was more cooked than Howzans because well.. yea.. like i said i dont do raw so maybe thats why but it was Ok.. didnt dislike it but didnt quite like it either (aside from being a food snob ive been known to be very picky :P)

3rd course was the kanpachi yellowtail with microgreen salad. Once again his was raw mine was fully cooked. This is the only fish that ive ever eaten raw... and firstly was able to eat raw and actually enjoyed. It was tender, buttery and didnt taste fishy at all. Very delish!

4th was a lobster tempura in spicy mayonnaise sauce. Kinda blah, nothing special. Just fried up lobster chunks. Was a little disappointed with this one because its so.. typical.

This is the black cod with miso sauce and japanese pickles and ginger. This was pretty good. Was nice and flakey and had a nice sweetness to it. It was however a bit heavy and at this point I was getting quite full. Also I didnt like the fishiness of it near the skin. Usually i like fish skin.. but this was.... fishy. :P

Next... the japanese clam Miso soup. The soup wasnt overly salty.. but then.. I wasnt sure... I think it was kinda bland.. the clams... a lil dried out but then again it was cooked in the soup .. so.. yea.. its miso soup :P

Next was the sushi course, he had yellowtail belly, toro, mackerel, baby snapper, Salmon. Overally it was said to be good except the baby snapper which was a lil tough and not a tender fish. I had the Octopus, Eel, Shrimp, Crab, Egg Sushi. At this point i was really stuffed. I also... shameful to my japanese roots... do NOT like wasabi.. i CANT eat it ... so... yea... i dont really like sushi :P

MMmmm final course was dessert which i LOVE. It was a chocolate souffle cake with fresh made green tea ice cream. The sweetness was perfect not too overbearing and the green tea ice cream was perfect because it was fresh made therefore NOT the eerie artificial green color. And oh man this was good :P I think i need to go back to Nobu for the dessert :)
And thats it.. I came home.. so stuffed.. probably mostly because Ive been sick for the past 2 weeks and havent had a real meal in 2 weeks anyways. I came home pretty satisfied. Not sure Id go back very often but it was alright.. I think like a 6-7/10... I think Im a bigger fan of Lan in the east village cuz they have lots of good beef dishes.. and i love beef :) .. desserts.... Nobu definitely wins on that one. Next to Payard it may be the best ive had so far.... Neways... my budget is shot for the next few months so .. probably wont be many entries for a while :P. Youve been warned. |
