But First, a Philosphy Break

Back at the Socrates Cafe, we have a revisit of some questions of the past; ones that didn't get the vote, so to speak. It's nice to see them back in play. Once again, I started to choose the one that I originally put forth. And once again, I came up dry. So...

"What is the ultimate one-sentence philosophy? Why?"

It was rather hard to come up with just one, you know. There are so many. I love Lance Armstrong's philosophy of "Unity is strength, Knowledge is power, Attitude is everything." So true, especially when dealing with the crap that life throws at us--cancer, poverty, ignorance. But I also love the John Denver idea that "You do what you can do and I'll do what I can do, and together, we can make a difference." The concept that it takes ALL of us to do it, that you're only one person...you do what you can do. So many one liners out there that tend to sum it all up...especially that bit about "Everything I know about life, I learned from...(fill it in here--kindergarten, your cat, your dog, the windmill, the frog...whatever.) Or another personal favorite that never gets quoted correctly. From the self proclaimed Demon, Aleister Crowley, he had to get something right, "Do as thou wilt shalt be the whole of the law; and the law is Love, Love under Will." No one ever gets that right.

BUT....

This is gonna sound dumb as hell and I have to confess, I didn't come up with this. I sorta borrowed this from the Tom Lehrer CD, An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer. And yes, I'm putting a link up there for you to look at and hopefully buy this CD. More than worth the money.

Anyway, the track is We Will All Go Together When We Go. He tells this story about his friend, Hen3ry ("The 3 was silent, you see."). Hen3ry has written a rather interesting novel "about a young necrophiliac who achieved his life long ambition by becoming a coroner. (after smattering of laughter) The rest of you can look it up when you get home." Hen3ry also has a unique perspective on life, his basic philosphy being, "Life is like a sewer; what you get out of it depends mostly on what you put into it."

So, you want to know what my one sentence philosophy is? That's it. Life IS like a sewer, you know. Attitude truly is everything. And what you put into your life is pretty much what you get out of it. You can dump the sewage of anger and self pity, the exrement and detritus of insecurity into the sewer and, lo and behold, that's what comes out in the processing plant of the cosmos. What comes flying back at you is probably gonna be worse in most cases. Throw in shit, you bet back smellier shit.

But you can toss in so much more. The positive outlook of what can be, the idea of living up to our potential. Putting forth the best you can be and living to that goal. Never letting anyone tell you how to be or think or react. Never letting something else dictate how your day has to go or how you have to feel towards gays or blacks or hispanics or Satanists. Learning and then putting it out there, what you've learned. If you put out love, you'll get back greater love. It's just that simple.

We have this concept, in my religion. Like usually attracts like, in that the more cluttered you are, the more clutter you attract. Kinda follows that whole bit about Karmic Law--that which you send out, returns to you three-, seven-, or tenfold (depending on which Eastern Philosophy you follow). Isn't that saying the same thing? Life is like a sewer?

So, that's my choice for favorite. Thanks, Hen3ry, for passing that on. Doesn't mean I like the others less and won't follow them. Just means...well, I'm not afraid to laugh with God. And I think humor makes a better point. Don't you?

Peace, fellow babies. Oh, and don't forget to read the little blurb under this. My Mom's got her own blog now. It'll be cool.

Guess there are alot of people out there without much to toss into their pot eh? I liked Charles Manson's take, "no sense makes sense", he was a bit extreme in taking it to the people, but it still works. haha.

ryc: yeah, if only it was Johnny Depp. For a day.

How do you think this life philosophy of "Life is a sewer" will influence the mood of a person living with this as central philosophy to his/her life?

To Zeal4living: I would like to believe that it would make that person think of his/her perspective and change what needs to be changed, celebrate what works, and figure out the rest on the way. I've had more than a little crap thrown my way recently. I tend to view it in the perspective of "how can I deal with this and still keep on plugging?" I try to put as little shit as possible in my life...and I tend to get as little shit as possible back. Doesn't always work that way, but it could be a lot worse.

To Bonzo64: Sweety, we all have the right to speak and believe. We don't have the right to attack someone because of their beliefs. Just because I don't agree with a viewpoint, I certainly don't think it should be squashed. And this whole business of the cartoons...like I said. I'm of two minds. I don't know that I like the bit of lampooning Mohammed because of an issue with the extremists. But, on the other hand...Voltaire had it pegged. If that makes me a hypocrite, so be it. And if you think attacking someone makes you a bigger man, that's your problem.

His name was Anton Le Vey. I read his books because I worked with someone who was an avowed Satanist. He called me on something, saying if I'd never read the books, how would I know what they believed. He had a damned good point, thank you, Thad. I suggest the same for you. That and a good Xanax prescription.

If life is a sewar does that meant it isn't possible to ever get anything good out of it?  I agree that attitude matters ... but I wonder if there is a better analogy than a sewar here?  Just a thought, wonderful post

I must say he is a persistent little cuss, ain't he?  LOL!  It may seem like an odd way to do things, but I really thought by honestly expressing my thoughts, I just might chase away a few of the less tolerant/more Right Wing types who seem to have gravitated toward my blog.  I'm not sure why, perhaps because I generally only blog about family and friends.  Pretty innocuous stuff.  Good thing they never read my tirade on Pope John Paul that got me started here!

Well, it all sounds good but I can't help but feel, then, that I'm an enigma.  I always treat people with kindness and a sense of fair play, I don't categorize people based on any sort of criteria such as race, religion etc.  I endeavor to do good thngs for people at every opportunity and speak positively about people until such time their worthiness comes into question.  If life is a sewer and you get out of it what you put into it, then I'm long overdue for something other than the crap I've been dealing with for years and even more so, just recently.  I think I can make a case that some people are just born 'Sad Sacks" and are destined to be shoveling poopy more often than not.

I love your philosophy piece. Perfectly summed up. Many religions I have come across that suggest the same idea, only different works. I believe in the common thread.

Regarding Isabella, you like?

I came over to meet you, because your comment at transvestite_rabbit's blog so mirrors my own feelings on the crisis involving cartoons and embassy burnings.  And I'm just as impressed by what else I've seen on this page.  I hope you don't mind my subscribing to your blog.  And, please read my blog dated Monday, Feb. 6.  I can use more supporters.

But can't a lie be beautiful or pleasing to the soul? When we tell those "little white lies" to someone to save face or someone's feelings? Can't a truth be ugly, when it must be said but will probably cause hurt?

No. I think you answered this in your post. The Truth is this, you tell a lie to make someone feel better because you understand kindness, compassion, and love are important to put out. Understanding Truth isn't about looking smart or being a jerk, the Truth is love is the greatest force in this world look at Platos three forms, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness, they equal Love. In one of those weird paradoxes by telling a lie you are reflecting the Truth about Love. Hey no one ever said understanding the forms was easy ;)
Truth cannot be ugly. The person tellin the Truth can, but not the actual Truth. A lie is not Beautiful, the love it sends is. Peace.

Interesting ... If everyone followed the ideas of the karma we'd definitely have a more positive world. I think we don't because teaching someone that these laws are true is not easy. Not everyone really believes it. They don't see how they can get things done without fighting as hard as they can.

How do you suppose we can really teach this idea to people?

Orc, that's a great question. I think we, as a society, would have to really shift our focus. Seems like we've become a society of excuses and blame. I don't see a whole lot of taking responsibility going on here anymore. Which is a sweeping generalization, I know. I think perhaps the court system is a start. No more frivolous lawsuits. The cup says "caution: HOT liquid." Why are you driving with the damn cup in your lap? If you can't get away with it, maybe it'll impress upon you the point. Parents, your children are YOUR responsibility. No, not every parent is bad. I've got a great friend with a demon first child--her husband's first, actually. They got J when he was two or three, if memory serves. They did everything right. The kid turned out to be a monster! But there are others out there who give parenting a bad name. The education system. You don't have to paddle a child to teach responsibility. But there has to be an accountability. No more excuses why Johnny can't read. Parents, take an active part. Teachers, look beyond June, July, and August. School systems, start hiring teachers with more vision and inspiration and then pay them what they're worth. Government, give the education department as much concern as you give the Defense Department!

If we all hold each other accountable for our action, we'll learn it.Teaching responsibility for your actions, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Karma. It can be done.
