Crazy Happenings in the Life of an Elementary School TeacherHope this brings a little sunshine to your day. These things sure made me laugh when they happened. 1. Imagine: There is a light snow falling from the sky and every 1st grader is enamored with the fact that they are allowed to go outside while it is snowing. It is the hot topic of conversation through the twenty minutes of lunch. It is finally time to leave the building. 63 6 and 7 year olds emerge from the building to enjoy twenty minutes of a winter wonderland. 15 minutes later, one little boy runs up to me and asks, so very sincerely, "Ms. Vineyard, what is that white stuff falling from the sky?" 2. We are leaving the cafeteria to spend recess in the safe/warm classroom watching a movie. You would think that getting to the classroom would be relatively easy. Enter: 63 6 and 7 year olds with a range of personalities and temperments. One such person reports that another of his cohorts uttered the "S" word. And this time he was not referring to Shut up, though I am sure you can imagine the word that did happen to cross the young mans lips. The angry little one, upset that he'd been told on, yelled, "I did not!" and then, slapped his classmate across the face! 3. It is writing time and a little boy referrs to the librarian in his story. He refers to the married woman as Ms. (her name) as he is writing and the adult helping him with his writing commented that she thought she was married, so it should be Mrs. (her name). The child disagreed, she went to verify, and came back to let him know that it was indeed Mrs. Frustrated, he responded, "But that means there are lots of her!" And, so we have learned that "Ms." means there is just one woman and "Mrs." means there are more than one of that woman. From the mind of a 6 year old. Well, as you can see, life is never boring, and I am learning during every minute of it. As the year rolls around, I will be looking for a better job, so I can move up in the ranks on the education totem pole. Who knows, sometime in the future, maybe I will get the chance to teach in Brooklyn or Manhattan or abroad. Life is good, God is good, and it is only a little over a month until spring training begins! Go Cardinals!!! KRV |
