"Stay warm." "Stay dry."

I heard those phrases no less than five times each today.  They weren't always said to me, and in fact, I think I said those things to people several times today.  But while I was driving home from work, stuck in traffic trying to get across the Church Street bridge, I wondered: Why do we say things like that to one another?  Don't you think that almost everyone's intention was to stay warm and dry today?  Is saying "Stay warm" kind of like a prayer or a wish for them, that they have coats to wear and heaters that work?  Or do we just have a need to say something before someone leaves?  Is it maybe our parental nature, wanting to make sure that people don't get sick?  What do you think?
