Announcing the Long J. Vinh Scholarship for Rebellious Tendencies!

My sister and I were swimming at the pool when we saw a flyer for a scholarship-- dated 2003!

I have a mind that seeks to foment rebellion.

Just looking around the pool, I thought, "if five kids were to get together and decide to 'defy the rules', say, by jumping in during the ridiculous 15-minute mandatory 'break' period, or doing flips where they're not supposed to, how could the life guards stop them?"  There's only one lifeguard, maybe two at most.  And each lifeguard has only two arms.  Sure, the lifeguard could simply tell the kids to stop-- and most would, obedient little pugs they are (or have been trained to be).  They could even threaten to ban them from the pool-- but how would they do it?  Suppose these five kids were ruthlessly defiant.  Because of the physical limitations described before, there's no way the lifeguards would be able to restrain them all at once.  As long as there's a determined will and enough numbers, the rebellion will succeed.

With that in mind, I now proudly introduce the Long J. Vinh Scholarship for Rebellious Tendencies.  Simply submit an essay detailing how you and your group defied an established authority.  The essay has no minimum and no limits in length; however, embellishing details and good storytelling are encouraged.  Videos, photographs, and other supporting media will also be accepted as supporting evidence, but the essay will be the primary article judged.  "But what if they just make it up?" asks Linh.  Well, I'm sure some contestants will, and I'm looking forward to reading numerous entertaining fakes.  My answer to this is to remind the would-be pretenders that nonfiction is always more authentic than fiction; fantasy derives its magnetism from real-world drama.  Six months seems like a goodly amount of time for planning and executing shenanigans, so I'll set the deadline for submissions to 1.11.07.  Entries will be judged on the following categories: Quality, Creativity and Imagination, and Authenticity (how well it captures the spirit of Questioning Authority).  The winner will receive a $100 cash reward and tons of publicity.  So get cracking, and plan that rebellion you've always dreamed of!

*A side note, all entries must also be Ethical.  That means no senseless harming of innocent people-- it's quite rebellious, but it's also unethical, and we don't like it.  So keep that in mind.

Submit all entries to shadowzero359[ a t ]gmail[ . ]com.  For videos, put em on Youtube.  Photos, Flickr or Photobucket.  Cheers!

=)
