    Hide the Pain (part XI)

The night was calm with everyone – humans and aces alike – having gone to bed. The halls had an eerily heavy silence to them, but at the same time it was oddly comforting. A soft darkness had settled on the world as the Gladiator stood waiting to see if this night would be the night his offer would be accepted by his ‘frog.’ Leaning against the wall casually with his right foot against the wall – knee slightly bent – Noah turned his head to the side and looked out the window a few feet away. The moon had a brilliant shine tonight and the moonlight flowed easily and flawlessly through the window, forming a soft glowing pool on the floor. As he waited, Noah gazed dreamily at the puddle of light, allowing its calm to wash over him – soothing him. After getting lost in the shimmering pool for a while, the Viper slowly lifted his eyes and looked out the window at a tree just outside of the school. Although the view was at an angle he could see the tree perfectly. He watched as the tree glistened; the moonlight reflecting off the water droplets on the branches and leaves.

There seemed to be a heavy calm surrounding the Gladiator as he waited for his guest. Closing his eyes and focusing his senses as if he were about to hunt, Noah listened and felt his surroundings, using his tongue to ‘taste’ the air every so often as he would do in snake form. Even with his eyes closed he could still ‘see’ as one student a few feet down the hall stirred in his sleep, while another student, somewhat further down, got up and sluggishly made his way into another room. Seeing that the only movements were coming from students stirring in their sleep or getting up to relieve their bladder, the Gladiator focused his attention on the outside world for the time being. Eyes closed, Noah turned his head in the direction of the window. He could feel the moisture that still hung in the air as a result of the rain that had fallen earlier that day – leaving a soft cool breeze that played with the grass and danced with the leaves of the tree.

The moonlight and the stillness that surrounded him reminded him so much of the nights he used to spend in his forest that he couldn’t help but close his eyes and let himself drift back into the comfort of his past – a past that was mostly filled with hardships, but it was a hardship that he learned to embrace and make a part of himself. As is necessary in every life, there were moments in the Gladiator’s life which we were filled with calm, and those times he cherished most of all; it meant that for what ever little time it was, he was able to let his guard down and lay down his armor and the predatory mindset that came with it. Lost in his memories, Noah failed to notice that Edgar had arrived and was standing a few feet away from him – arms hanging at his side, head down and turned slightly. After standing there for what seemed like an eternity Edgar decided to try and make his presence known.

“Ah…um…Ed-Edgar….Edgar has come for his clothes…” the little Gecko muttered, his voice barely above that of a whisper. Turning slowly, the Gladiator looked at the Servant and, noticing that he was blushing slightly, smirked and said, “well…hello there, little frog,” causing the Servant’s face to turn a darker shade of red.

“I…Edgar’s not a…a frog,” Edgar replied somewhat defiantly, almost whining.
“I know that, sweets, but wouldn’t you like to be one……for me?” Noah chuckled in response, amused by the change that this never failed to cause in him. The boy didn’t reply but simply looked away as if shielding his eyes from a gruesome scene on a battlefield. “I see…” the Gladiator replied, “I don’t suppose you would.”

As timed passed, the Gladiator tried nearly everything to get the boy to relax around him, but it seemed as though a wall had been built around his heart and soul. No matter how comfortable or relaxed the boy seemed, the Gladiator could feel that there was a part of him that had been locked away deep inside of him – it was like a vast emptiness, and the Viper shivered every time he would let his mind linger on it for too long. Noah couldn’t help but feel responsible for that, so he decided that it would be up to him to break down the walls and rid the boy of that emptiness which he had helped to build.

                                           Hide the Pain (Part X)

The next few days Edgar went about his duties without giving either the Gladiator or his letter so much as a second thought. It really wasn’t at all that difficult to erase the dark armored man from his mind seeing as how any thoughts of him brought back memories that the Servant would rather not be bothered thinking about. The half-white half-blue Gecko spent the length of a week blissfully content in the service of his Prince – taking his notes, doing his homework, helping him dress, and helping him study for his exams – so you can imagine his surprise when one night as he laid peacefully sleeping, curled up in his Prince’s hair, he was awoken by the vague yet familiar sound of something rattling softly outside Fleance’s door.

Looking at the door lazily, Edgar tried to identify the noise he was hearing. Noah, he whispered suddenly as all traces of slumber were wiped from his mind. The Servant carefully made his way towards the door so as not to wake his Prince and opened it to find that the Gladiator was no where in sight. All that remained as proof that he had been there was a beautiful blood red rose with its stem cut short laying on the floor with a note, folded in half with the words ‘To Edgar, The Frog’ carefully attached to it. Picking up the flower and note, Edgar couldn’t help but feel…flattered. No one had ever given a gift before, least of all a rose. Bringing the rose to his nose, Edgar inhaled its equally beautiful fragrance slightly before opening the note.

    To Edgar,

It seems that you had decided to decline my offer to meet. Well, like I said before, the decision was yours whether to come or not…but like I also said before, I want to get to know you better so, the offer still stands and I’ll wait for you every night until you decide to come. Although…I hope that’s soon and, of course, I won’t wait forever. Eventually, I suppose, if you never show I would have to take the hint that you want nothing to do with me. Something like that could really break a poor Gladiator’s heart and you wouldn’t want to do something like that now would you, my beautiful little frog?

Well, here’s hoping you take up my offer to get to know each other better.

     Noah, Legendary Ace

Reading the note a slight blush rose to Edgar’s cheeks as he read the words, ‘my beautiful little frog.’ Holding the note and flower to his chest, Edgar looked down the hall on each side of him. He had suddenly gotten the feeling as though he was being watched, but as he looked he saw no one. So, turning back into the room he read the note one last time before disposing of it like he did the other note. He simply couldn’t understand where the Viper’s fascination with him stemmed from…there was nothing about him to admire, he was merely a servant and nothing more so…why was he wasting so much of his time on a servant such as himself? Edgar just couldn’t fathom it. Thinking that it was only right to keep a memento to remind him of his first gift, Edgar took a petal from the rose and placed it gently between the silver pages of his journal, and then, somewhat reluctantly disposed of the rest of the rose.

As he curled back into Fleance’s hair, Edgar briefly considered taking Noah up on his offer but soon dismissed the idea, not wanting to cause any unnecessary problems for his Prince. The next few days Edgar found himself unable to keep the darkly seductive man from his mind. He found it more and more difficult to focus on his duties and to tell the truth, Noah hadn’t been making it any easier on him either. With every passing night Edgar was awoken by a soft rattling sound just beyond his door, only to open it and find that the gladiator had left him yet another gift. On the first night after the rose he’d received three little candied hearts wrapped carefully in a clear foil, but seeing as how he wasn’t much for human sweets he only ate one; on the second night he received three fresh crickets, those were some of Edgar’s favorite snacks so relished in eating two of them; but on the third night he received honey covered crickets, which was his absolute favorite food. He ate every last bite but then something started bothering him…how did Noah know that honey covered…anything was his favorite thing to eat? However he’d found out, it now became his gift of choice to give to his ‘little frog,’ and so by the fifth night Edgar decided that he would go and meet with the gladiator.

                                                Hide the Pain (Part IX)

About 2 days had passed since the night Edgar had run into the gladiator while doing his laundry, and even though he had yet to go back for the uniform he left in the washing machine, Fleance hadn’t asked him about them. The fact that his Prince hadn’t bothered to ask why he wasn’t wearing his usual uniform when a few nights ago he had seemed so concerned, worried Edgar…don’t get him wrong, he was relieved that Fleance had stopped asking so many questions which he could never answer truthfully but still…he wondered why he didn’t ask about the clothes. The thought occurred to Edgar that maybe his Prince had just stopped caring about him and what he did, but that thought was quickly dismissed. He simply didn’t want to think anything bad about his Prince.

That night Edgar was awaken by the sound of soft rattling outside his Prince’s dorm room. Lifting up his head and staring at the door trying to figure out what the source of the noise was, the sudden realization of who was behind the door came to him and a single word, rattlesnake, rang through his head. Frozen, Edgar stared at the door not even daring to move, until he heard the rattling come to a stop. After several moments of silence, Edgar got down from the bed and slowly and carefully made his way to the door, opening it just a crack to make check that the Gladiator had left. Opening the door all the way and looking down the hall in each direction, making sure that there was no one in the halls the boy was about to close the door and return to his Prince’s side when something underneath him caught his attention. Looking down, the Servant saw his uniform laying on the floor to the right of the door neatly folded with a note stuck to it.

Bending down and reaching for the neatly folded clothing as if reaching into a pit of deadly vipers ready to strike at the slightest movement, the Servant hesitated slightly as his hand reached about an inch above the clothing before picking it up. Holding the clothes as if they were some fragile thing to be handled with the utmost care, the boy took the note and read it. Confused and somewhat caught off-guard by the contents of the note he read it over and over again until he could have recited it back to the author had he suddenly appeared and demanded it of him.

Returning to the room and closing the door behind him, the Servant took the note, ripped it and placed it in the waste basket near the end of Fleance’s bed, then changed back into his original clothes, happy to finally be able to get out of and return to the human his belongings. Taking the long sleeved grey shirt and grey sweatpants and folding them neatly, Edgar slid them carefully under Fleance’s bed saying that if he had time he would try and go wash them before returning them to the human. Curling onto Fleance’s pillow, Edgar went over the contents of the note one more time.

    To Edgar:

Hello again, little frog, it appears you were in a bit of a hurry the other night and left without taking your clothes. I could almost swear it had something to do with my being there…so, I decided that I would be kind and return them to you.

On a more…serious note, I would like to apologize for having inspired such a sense of…anxiety in you. Believe it or not that is the last thing I would have you feel for me…our first encounter was a bit…harsh, if that’s the word, and to be truthful I would give almost anything to do it over again…or rather…to do it right. So, that is why in addition to returning your belongings to you I ask that you meet me near the third floor laundry room tomorrow night. The decision is yours of course, but I do hope you come so that we can get to know each other better.

    Noah, Legendary Gladiator

Ps. Yes, I do know that you are not a frog…I am not that dense. It’s just that I find the word “frog” to be a cuter name rather than “gecko” and besides…it suits you don’t you think?

                                      Hide The Pain (Part VIII)

Edgar made his way back to Fleance’s dorm, crawled on to the bed and curled on the pillow near his head. Even though he was now back in the safety of his Prince’s company, the little Gecko couldn’t stop himself from shaking all over as memories of the previous night kept rushing at him. Curling into a tighter ball, he tried to make the shaking stop. After a few moments he felt Fleance move and when he looked up he saw golden eyes looking down at him. “Were you able to find the laundry room?”  Fleance asked, sounding way more awake and alert than the Servant would have preferred at the moment. “Y-Yes, my Prince,” Edgar answered, and suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to take his clothes with him, and prayed that Fleance wouldn’t ask about them.

For a few moments Fleance just looked at the Gecko as if he were staring into his soul as if he were studying him, then without warning he asked, “Is everything all right, Edgar?” Edgar was shocked, to say the least, to hear Fleance pose that question…he had hoped that he wouldn’t have noticed his strange behavior. “Yes, o-of course…everything is fine, my Prince. Please don’t worry.” Fleance looked at him for a few moments then said, “Edgar…since last night when you came back from the bio room you have been acting quite…peculiar…has something happened that I should know about?”

“Ah…well…n-no…nothing has happened.” Edgar was now panicking that Fleance had noticed his recent behavior.

“Do not lie to me Edgar. I am your Prince, I chose you specially and gave your soul…you’ve been by my side since the very first day you received your ace from me…you can’t hide your pain…or your troubles from me. Now, tell me what’s wrong.”

With that, Edgar started feeling horrible about keeping secrets from his Prince and he resolved to tell him everything, but as soon as he opened his mouth to speak the Viper’s words rang through his head, if you tell anyone I’m here, I’ll kill you. So, with tears brimming his eyes the servant said to his Prince, “Truly a kinder Prince there has never been…I truly and earnestly appreciate Prince’s concern for me but…” Edgar paused to take a breath and…hopefully in tern compose himself then added, “…There is nothing that my Prince should be worried about…”

Fleance did not answer immediately, but instead just looked at him with eyes that were impossible to read or decipher and that worried Edgar greatly, and after a few moments Fleance said, “…all right…good night, then” and went back to sleep.

                                       Hide the Pain (Part VII)

The Gladiator couldn’t, for the life of him, get that boy and the events of the previous night out of his mind. The whole day he was bothered by memories of the boy’s face, words, eyes, and touch – and frankly he couldn’t take it anymore, he was tired, restless and frustrated. Feeling the need to do something other than sit in his tank all day, Noah shifted into ace form and left the bio room, having decided to take a walk and explore the school. As he slowly made his way up to and through the 2nd floor, Noah passed by one of the public showers that the building housed. As he walked by it he decided that he would take a shower to try and relieve some of the stress and tension that had built up but…he didn’t quite feel like ending his walk just then, so he decide to continue his walk and stop at the next shower he saw.

Having made his way to the third floor and walked nearly the whole of it, Noah headed in the direction in which he saw the showers on the previous floor, he remembered that the showers on the 2nd floor was near a staircase and a room 229. As Noah approached the staircase he heard a whirring sound coming from where he remembered the showers being on the previous floor. Walking past the room, the Gladiator looked in only to see, leaning against the machine that was making the noise, the very cause of his torment.

Feeling as though he was being watched, the Servant was surprised and somewhat horrified to find Noah, the Legendary Gladiator standing in the doorway of the laundry room. Stepping into the room and walking casually over to where the boy stood staring at him with a scared look in his eyes, the Gladiator said, “Well, well, well…what do we have here? I must say, sweets, I’m a bit surprised to see you…and here I was just trying to get you out of my mind.” With every step the Gladiator had taken the Servant had taken one step back, until he had backed himself up against the wall with the Viper blocking his only path of escape. This situation was beginning to look too familiar to the little Gecko and memories of their previous encounter started rushing back to him. “P-Please I…I…Ed-Edgar d-d-doesn’t…p-please…” Edgar could barely create a coherent sentence as fear and pain took over him and he started to shake.

Noah couldn’t understand why the boy was so scared…ok , so maybe he could but still, he didn’t expect that he’d be so affected just by the sight of him. Looking at the boy, Noah wanted so badly to comfort him and to apologize and have him understand that he deeply regretted what he did…he hated seeing such a beautiful creature look so afraid and in pain. The Gladiator reached out a hand to place on the boy’s face in an attempt to comfort him, and just as he did so the boy flinched, shut his eyes tight and started sobbing, “P-Please d-don’t hurt Ed-Edgar.” The Gladiator was hurt by the boy’s drastic reaction. Flinching as if someone had just smacked him across the face Noah took a step back from the boy and opened his mouth as if to say something but nothing seemed to come out. Closing his mouth, he just looked at the shaking, frightened form standing before him.

Taking a deep breath and looking away he tried to speak again, “Look…I’m really sorry about the other night…that wasn’t…I didn’t mean to do that. I just let my temper get the best of me and I’m really sorry for that.” Noah looked at the boy hoping that his words had calmed him down some only to find that it hadn’t caused any change at all in the boy. It seemed as if the boy gone in his fear to have heard anything he said. The Gladiator watched as the boy tensed up and muttered out, “P-Please…I…l-let Ed-Edgar r-return t-to his P-Prince…” Noah stared dumbfounded at the boy; he couldn’t believe what just came out of his mouth. What is this?!! What the fuck is with this kid and this Prince of his?!  He was starting to lose his tempter again, he couldn’t understand why this boy was so attached to this Prince of his, and so he decided that it’d be best to let the boy go before he completely lost his temper again and hurt the boy. “Fine, go.” And with that he watched as Edgar bolted past him and out of the room, not bothering to look back or to tend to the machine that had stopped whirring during the course of their little ‘talk.’

“This is going to be harder than I thought,” Noah sighed as he rubbed his temples as he felt himself getting stressed again. Deciding that he’d go on with his original plan to go take a shower, Noah made his way to the door but as he stepped through he remembered that the little Gecko hadn’t taken whatever he was washing with him. Going back to the machine, the Gladiator looked inside and saw that it was his own clothes that he had been washing so he took them along with him as he continued his search for the showers.
