[I wrote this last night but stupid xanga had some sort of technical difficulty]
I was reading an essay written by Ronald Takaki. He wrote about how Asian Americans are successful in their lives. They have been described in the media as "excessively, even provocatively" successful in gaining admission to universities. Some politicians and pundits ask "Why can't African Americans"? The comparison had generated African American resentment towards Asian American. Majority of Asian Americans live in states with higher cost of living as well as incomes. Through a higher education by attending top-notch universities, Asian Americans were able to reach what they want out of their lives. For those that did not have education and have language barrier, they did not have the capacity to succeed in life which made them lived in poverty and the availability of decent jobs and at reasonable salary is scarcely to be achieved.
Everybody knows that each and single one of us is unique; we have our own weaknesses and strongest capabilities, what is our weakness could be someone's strongest ability and vice-versa. While I was reading the essay, there is one information which I find thought-provoking; the comparison between the success of African Americans and Asian Americans. I think it is unfair to make a comparison between two different ethnic backgrounds especially with what ability they bring to the world because all of us have different need of attention to become successful in our lives, others might find it hard, some easy. I personally think it is best to evaluate and reflect the gathered information before having it published so that there will be less misleading details and conclusions. We cannot generalize nor exaggerate statistics and details about Asian American's success because I know that there some percentage that shows a number of Asian Americans that are just as bad as African Americans and I believe that there are numbers of African Americans that are just as good as Asian Americans. For instance, the essay has mentioned "the triumph of Korean immigrants has been exaggerated" but the essay seem to imply that all Asian American are successful. These Korean immigrants are college educated and had good professions in Korea such as engineers, teachers, or administrators but when they had migrated to America these immigrants worked as a shopkeeper which is a step downward in status. We should not leap into conclusion unless we have clear, valid evidence and lose the credit to those who are categorized in "not-so-successful" when they are actually "successful" in their lives.
How important is the individual's race or ethnicity in success? Not much. Money and education usually lead to material success.
Stereotyping is BAD!!
This month is bunch-a-essay/term paper writing month. We are talking 8-15 pages! Isn’t that ridiculous?! I do not like to write (well, depends…) In fact, I dislike writing so much that I have developed a series of steps for postponing the agony of doing writing assignments. First, I tell myself that to proceed without the proper equipment would be unwise. So I go out to buy new pen. (har har) This kills at least an hour. Next I begin to stare at the blank page. Before long, however, I realize that writing may also require thought; so I begin to think deeply about my subject…sprawled on the sofa. Soon I feel drowsy. This naturally leads to conclusion that I need a nap because I can’t throw myself into my writing until I am at my very best. After a refreshing nap, I again face the blank page. It is usually at this stage that I actually write a sentence or two—disappointing ones. I wisely decide that I need inspiration, perhaps from an interesting magazine or a television movie. If thoughts of my writing assignment should interfere while I am reading or watching television, I comfort myself with the knowledge that, as any artist knows, you can’t rush these things.
So…Star Wars is NOW PLAYING in theatres near you. I think Kyle went to see it on Thursday midnight at 1000 Van Ness. He was telling me in class that his friend’s dad work for Lucas and it is better than The Empire Strikes Back. I wanted to go but I couldn’t because I had to finish up my term paper (I stayed up till 4 AM and woke up around 7 just so that there’s enough time to prepare myself before attending a 9:30 class. Half an hour ago, [last night 11:30 PM] my brother was being such a pest asking for some dough just to watch star wars.
Me: You’re not a geek…why watch it?! (sarcasm)
HIM: So…lend me some cash!!
-EDIT-
I lent him $40 and the itch is gone. I am going to see the movie tonight (hopefully) with Liliana and possibly with other friends as well…chances are slim to none. I will buy the movie tickets around 10 and get either 7 PM 8 PM 9 PM show and it will be cheaper (it's all about connectionz) thanks to Liliana.
