  • The Great Debate Part 1

I don't even know if anyone follows my site anymore, but I have several topics that have been burning inside for a couple of weeks.  Jake and I have been discussing these at great length and now I'm ready to take them public.  My disclaimer to this is that I, in no way, am an expert, just an average joe interested in what people think.  Here is the kicker, I am particularly interested in what followers of Christ believe.  I truly am genuinely interested in what people believe and what they have to say.  My desire is NOT to debate, argue or convince you to change your opinion based on what I believe.  I really want to know where people are coming from concerning certain issues.

It appears to me that after pledging one's allegiance to a particular party all sense of objective reasoning flies out the window.  Alright, "all" is probably not fair to say, but how many people do you know are part of "fill in the blank" party and detest the opposite party, as well as most of the people associated with that party?  Call me crazy, but it seems counterproductive to despise the very people that you are called to work with.  As believers what should our role be and what is our purpose in all of this political business?  I understand adhering to fundamental belief systems, but is it possible to do so, while still RESPECTING the opposite opinion?  Can we pray for those in positions of power who differ from your political party and do you?

So, there goes.  Let the opinions fly.  I truly hope I can get some feedback, but if not in written form, possibly by causing us to think outside of what we have always believed or known.

Just to reiterate, you are free to express your opinion, you are NOT welcome to argue, debate or put down anyone else's points of view.

  • Finley the judge

Fin has such a strong sense of right and wrong.  Typically, if I ask him not to do something he won't do it, even when Corban encourages him to.  I have heard him say multiple times, "mommy said no."  Well, yesterday morning, Jake was running out the door when the kids got up so we all went out to say bye.  Fin saw that Jake was carrying one of the kids plastic plates and told him that he couldn't take it.  He could not believe that daddy was taking the plate away.  Jake explained that he would bring it back later, but Fin wouldn't let it go.  He stood in the driveway waving and telling daddy to "bring that plate home!"  After Jake was gone Finley looked at me and said, that's a bad daddy.  I asked him why and he said because he took our plate and he not do that.  Later I talked to Jake on the phone and Finley wanted to remind him to return the plate.

Corban has gotten in the habit of saying, "but mom!" when I ask him to do something.  I don't like it at all.  We have been working on obeying and then discussing whatever it is that he needs to say.  I want him to do whatever it is that I'm asking him to do, and then he can talk to me.  Example, I ask Corban to wash his hands and come to the table for lunch, but he is in the middle of something and says, "BUT MOM!"  So, I have been telling him to say, "yes ma'am" and do what I ask.  After he has obeyed he can say, "mom can I have a little bit more time to finish my" whatever it is that he was doing.  So, every time Corban says, "but mom" Finley quickly reminds him, "we no say, "but mom," we say, "yes, ma'am."  It cracks me up.  I'm sure it drives Corban crazy...

  • To be a daddy...

We are going through "The Power of a Praying Wife," in my Side-By-Side Bible study.  Last week we discussed Fatherhood, so I asked my boys, if they were going to teach someone how to be a daddy what did they need to know?  Finley just looked at Jake and pointed to him.  Fin said that he was a good daddy.  Corban expounded and said that a good daddy needs to:

    • jump on the trampoline
    • jump in piles of leaves
    • play with me
    • have pillow fights with me

What we heard our little boys saying, we need daddy's TIME.  They need quality time with their daddy doing things that little boys love to do.  To them, that is the perfect daddy.

What does being a good daddy or having a good daddy mean to you?
