The Story of the Ghost

Seriously. This is torture. National championship football game on television and I'm stuck here at the computer. Yes, I could go out to a bar to watch it, but that gets expensive and boring. However, probably not as boring as following it via a text match tracker on yahoo.

I'm really not this football obsessed, but I don't have a job, I don't know too many people down here and those that I do know don't really care about sports. Oh yeah, my wife works nights too, so that leaves me tons of time to kill in the evenings. I might have to leave the house for the second half.

I'm unemployed. When you're unemployed and being supported by another person, that person gets to call the shots regarding things like money. To make a long story short, the wife put the kibosh on cable since it's an unnecessary expense. Can't say that I blame her, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it either. To do this to a man during football and baskeball season is close to cruel, but she has her reasons, and for that, I forgive her.

Now, just because you take drugs away from a junkie doesn't mean he wants them any less. Just like the deprived addict, I have to seek out my fix in other ways. Which, in this case, means off to the sports bars by myself. None of the friends I've made in Orlando really care about sports, so they don't understand the nearly maniacal obsession that plagues we Alabamians when it comes to it trying to throw round balls through hoops or kick round balls in a net or to carry a pointy ball in a special section. I found some place called Coyote Grill that would be showing the Auburn vs. Virginia Tech game. I decided to pick that place because it's where the Auburn alumni association watches games. Not that I want to be around a bunch of Auburn fans (because I don't), but because I figured I could be in there for four hours and not have to order as much food because the place would be slam packed and I could be more anonymous. Cheap and lame I know, but hey, I'm a junkie without a job. Oh yeah, I know this game was on network television, but I can't pick that up too well in my apartment.

Anyway, watched the game with an amazingly subdued group of Auburn fans eventhough Auburn was in command the whole game. Had a few beers and some babyback ribs. Overall not a bad night out by myself. Auburn won, which in a bizarre way, I was glad about just because it makes the SEC look good, though I wish they'd lost their other 12 games this year.

Okay, so maybe I'm several days late with the update. Anyway, went to the Capital One Bowl on Saturday. We decided to go hit the stadium lots about 10 minutes after the game started figuring we'd just about be able to name our price, and that's pretty much what happend. Face value of the tickets was around$70-$75 each, but we managed to pick them up for $25 each. Not bad for a New Year's Day bowl game.

We were thankfully seated in the LSU section with our SEC brothers (we're Alabama fans after all) and the game was quite a roller coaster. LSU held close most of the game, but Iowa began to pull away and had a 12 point lead with eight minutes left in the game. LSU pulled some real wizardry and with 45 seconds left in the game went ahead 25-24. The place was coming unglued. The LSU fans were going berserk and the Iowa fans were looking incredibly dejected. Then, on their last play (with 14 seconds left), an Iowa receiver lined up and the LSU defense didn't cover him. He streaked down the field for over 50 yards unmarked and the Iowa quarterback threw the ball and hit him right in the hands. Touchdown Iowa. That place was really rocking after that. I felt bad for the LSU fans that had an 11 hour drive back home after watching their team both win and lose in the final minute of play.

Regardless, it was a lot of fun.

Went to the Capital One bowl today. Man, that was a long, exciting, exhausting game. Will post pictures and tales tomorrow.

Been thinking about Orlando some more. After returning home for a brief trip, I've decided to give Orlando another shot. Now that I've gotten over the homesickness, I'm starting to find some things here that fit my style. Some good shows coming up: Galactic, North Mississippi All Stars, Pedro the Lion, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Medeski Martin & Wood. I've got to get tickets to those. Wise decision seeing as I have no income.

Went to St. Augustine on Monday. That was a good time. Very cool city. Besides Miami, it's my favorite place I've been in Florida so far. Saw some nice architecture there and ate at a fantastic Greek Restaurant called Athena. Amazing food, if you don't mind dropping around $40-$50 for two people. They also had some really nice and super cute Russian waitresses.

Here's some random photos from around St. Augustine than I yanked off the web:

Will post some more photos later.
