Topic #15

Socratic Swing

This week, we're going to liberate all of you even further by allowing you to choose your own question (For detailed instructions, please see the prior blog).

If I could give all of you a little advice this week, it would be that you have your entries into me by Thursday instead of by Friday. By Friday, the activity in the ring is noticeably diminished, and this can be quite a disappointment to those just entering their blog and waiting for visits and questions. So, if at all possible, have your entry in by Thursday (or earlier) for maximum dialogue.

Again, I do want to clarify that I will be visiting only a percentage of the rings from here on in. However, you can expect a forum host to visit you. Since our beginnings, several members have been steadfast participants and have learned to question just as well or better than I can. Others are just trying their hand at it. Please consider these people as additional hosts to the forum and acting in its behalf when they visit.

So, let's get started. Please post your link to your Socratic discussion here.
If you don't know what we're doing, please visit the prior post for more information.

ummm is this the new format? is this the way its always going to be? cause I dont think I like it.... no offense, but I came to the Cafe' so YOU can give me a topic to write about, now what am I saposed to do? I'm lost! Maybe something will come to me.... but it seams that there will be a lot of confussion, and it will take WAY more time to visit people. I dont get around to everyone now! -pout- I need my coffee...

Simone, I know you're buisy and all, and this is not related to the Cafe', but I would really appriciate it if you go read my blog for the 5th. I respect your oppinion, and its important to me. (this after I rip your new Swing thing... sorry!) If you dont have time though, no worries!

Mia, no problem I understand your hesitation about the Swing. We're just giving it a try. And really, it is very much in the spirit of Socrates Cafe. Who wants to always talk about what others suggest? Surely, sometimes you must want to choose a topic for yourself. I encourage you to find something you're really passionate about. And if you still can't find a question after giving it some serious thought, why don't you check out some of those that were previously suggested in the past? If all else fails, you can take this time to visit and question the others on their topics. It won't be much different, in that regard.

I noticed that Astimari's topic "Is our future pre-destined and unchangeable?" is very similar in the subject to something that i would like to share with the friends of the ring. So, i'd rather participate deeply in that discussion instead of starting a new one.
So, what should i do? Should i post on my blog and give him the link in a comment as i did in the past with your blog or should I post it as a comment to his blog entry?

Thankyou so much for your time and comments! The poem really doesnt have a title, but I kinda call it 'poetry' because thats the first line, but your suggestion is better! I guess I should put the date of the cast in there, I did number it on the file. I cant do it like the ipod ones (being downloaded auto every day and such) because I cant embed this with the codes needed to make it do that. This free service doesnt allow that, but when I get my own space I intend to put it up on the Podcast page officially with the code so you can download the updates right from your ipod and all Just cant do that right now with the free thing. So glad it worked!! Thankyou so much for taking the time!

I think I will write on a suggested topic that didnt get picked, but I need to think about it a bit.

Thankyou Simone!

I have posted both question and answer today.  I apologize for not knowing how to provide a direct link.  If it's as simple as copying the address and hitting "add link" above the comment box, then I can try that for next time.  Any assistance or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Somebody needs to be the comic relief here.  As silly as it sounds, there is room for legitimate discussion.  (I think)

How does man expand his own potential? Will be the question with which the Warrior-Wizard will enter into the Socratic Swing. It seems that most questions here revolve around the What...if you wish then change the question to What is man's potential?

Hello Simone.  I have posted my question and answer on my page, but I'm not sure I have the right idea.  Can you please take a look and let me know if I've got the hang of this swing thing?  Thank you for your input, as always.

Interesting questions, but most are a bit too broad.

Perhaps a solid grounding in the lived experiences of material reality would foster a more constructive dialogue. In place of the meta-level "What is Torture?" we could instead consider questions like: "Should the CIA be exempt from laws against human rights violations such as torture?" or "Is there factual evidence that supports torture as a reliable tactic for intelligence gathering?"

These types of questions can get us out of the detached world of philosophical debate and back down to the ground where people live, face to face.

Yes I did write that myself, and it was deliberately Socratic. There's nothing better than questioning for airing a philosophical debate, but then, I would say that (I'm very classically trained).

I will participate in this, thank you.
