This is a quote from the comment of a Xangan who is not a member of Socrates Cafe. It appears on LimeLightShines' site:
"I love topics that produce more questions than answers. They make me think. And, hopefully, make me a better person for it. I had pretty strong, immovable views on capital punishment. Took a lot of criticism for my views but I didn't change. Then, one day, someone took the time to calmly (without passing judgement) explain their view (which was very different from mine). I began to see things differently because there was no anger or judgement involved. It made me think. It didn't happen overnight for sure, but my views on capital punishment are totally different now. So, yay to topics that make us think! Posted 2/21/2006 at 8:16 PM by gmmt"
It's a nice comment, isn't it? To me, it is a perfect commentary on Socratic discussion.

It looks like I (Nance1) will be your genial host. I will do my best to get around to everyone.
I will continue the discussion for 2 weeks. It seems like we get some participants during that second week who might not be able to participate if we were only running the discussion for one week. Please remember to visit the second week entries. Those members can also encourage visits to their sites by making visits themselves.
I ask again for our active members to invite Xanga friends who are members of Socrates Cafe but have not participated in awhile to join in the discussion again. Lets encourage our members to come back!
When your post is ready, please place a link in the comments under this post.
I am going to do something that I considered doing a few weeks ago, and then I guess you could say that I "chickened out." I am hoping that I can do it tactfully. These concerns were expressed to me earlier when I considered posting this, and now they have been expressed again by a different member of Socrates Cafe, so I feel that I must say something.
Let me review some principles of Socratic discussion:
Respect for all members is very important. As facilitator (even as temporary facilitator in Simone's absence), it is my primary responsibility to try to be sure that this is maintained. Respect does not mean that members cannot have differing opinions. It does mean that differing opinions should be expressed respectfully.
In a Socratic discussion, members listen to the differing opinions of others. One reason that members are encouraged to ask questions of each other is because that is a way of expressing differing opinions in a less threatening way. The goal of each exchange should always be to really understand what that other person is trying to say.
Please try to frame your comments as questions. Members may also choose to respond to questions on their sites with questions. It is not a good idea to delete comments or to block members from commenting. One of the characteristics of Socratic discussion is that all opinions may be heard. Ignoring a comment is preferable to deleting it. Remember that differing opinions do not threaten values. They may actually strengthen them by helping each of us to think our values through more deeply.
Please remember that each of us deserves to be heard and respected.
Thanks, and enjoy the upcoming discussion.
