Edit 2/28:  There have been some great new entries in the last couple of days.  Please visit the new participants, and new participants please visit everyone else and let them know that you are here!

Edit 2/22z: There are some wonderful discussions going on. Please visit. I am looking forward to reading more entries.

This is a quote from the comment of a Xangan who is not a member of Socrates Cafe. It appears on LimeLightShines' site:

"I love topics that produce more questions than answers.  They make me think.  And, hopefully, make me a better person for it.  I had pretty strong, immovable views on capital punishment.  Took a lot of criticism for my views but I didn't change.  Then, one day, someone took the time to calmly (without passing judgement) explain their view (which was very different from mine). I began to see things differently because there was no anger or judgement involved. It made me think.  It didn't happen overnight for sure, but my views on capital punishment are totally different now.  So, yay to topics that make us think!

It's a nice comment, isn't it? To me, it is a perfect commentary on Socratic discussion.

It looks like I (Nance1) will be your genial host. I will do my best to get around to everyone.

I will continue the discussion for 2 weeks. It seems like we get some participants during that second week who might not be able to participate if we were only running the discussion for one week. Please remember to visit the second week entries. Those members can also encourage visits to their sites by making visits themselves.

I ask again for our active members to invite Xanga friends who are members of Socrates Cafe but have not participated in awhile to join in the discussion again. Lets encourage our members to come back!

When your post is ready, please place a link in the comments under this post.

I am going to do something that I considered doing a few weeks ago, and then I guess you could say that I "chickened out." I am hoping that I can do it tactfully. These concerns were expressed to me earlier when I considered posting this, and now they have been expressed again by a different member of Socrates Cafe, so I feel that I must say something.

Let me review some principles of Socratic discussion:

Respect for all members is very important. As facilitator (even as temporary facilitator in Simone's absence), it is my primary responsibility to try to be sure that this is maintained. Respect does not mean that members cannot have differing opinions. It does mean that differing opinions should be expressed respectfully.

In a Socratic discussion, members listen to the differing opinions of others. One reason that members are encouraged to ask questions of each other is because that is a way of expressing differing opinions in a less threatening way. The goal of each exchange should always be to really understand what that other person is trying to say.

Please try to frame your comments as questions. Members may also choose to respond to questions on their sites with questions. It is not a good idea to delete comments or to block members from commenting. One of the characteristics of Socratic discussion is that all opinions may be heard. Ignoring a comment is preferable to deleting it. Remember that differing opinions do not threaten values. They may actually strengthen them by helping each of us to think our values through more deeply.

Please remember that each of us deserves to be heard and respected.

Thanks, and enjoy the upcoming discussion.

Nance1

I have rarely deleted comments and even more rarely blocked users in my entire time on Xanga.  Unfortunately it has become more common lately out of necessity.  Discussion is good.  Differing opinions are good.  Using my site as a forum to post private information about other Xangans, continue arguments from elsewhere, make blatant personal attacks, or promote blatantly illegal/immoral activity is not and I will not allow it.  If those things are required to participate in the Cafe then please inform me and I will remove myself from it.

Building_A_Mystery, personally i hate to see that sometimes the energy of participants of the group are wasted in commenting your blog. Not because it is a waste of energy to comment your entries, but because they probably would like to discuss, like it could happen in a forum, in a socratic debate their opinion versus your and other participants' opinions who commented in your blog.
I note that my opinion usually differ with yours, and that is actually one of the main reasons i used to comment them (what kind of boring discussion is the one where participants have the same opinion?).

Personally i think also that my comment were not offensive at all. At least, less offensive than your previous ones towards me (and i am not offended by them).
I did never post any private information about other Xangans and never made a "blatant" personal attack (ask somebody else if they find my comments "blatant", "personal" or "attacks" or any combination of those three scary definitions, if you have any doubt)

So, if your hostility towards me was because you don't want to discuss with someone with a different opinion, well you should have better said something like "Hey, italian_culture, shut up, because i don't want to discuss with you" instead of blocking me.
I probably would have stopped putting my comments on your blog, after asking in a socratic way "why?".
But that should have been the demonstration that you don't want to discuss in a socratic way, because, how Nance1 reminded, one of the target of a Socratic discussion is to help us to compare different opinions with ours. So, if it is like that, even hoping that nobody would delete you from the blog ring, i end up asking myself why do you feel pushed to participate to a blog ring you don't belong to.

I am not sure if i can dare to ask the same question to you, so i avoid, being clear that you don't want to speak with me.

I'm not sure I like the every two weeks thing, why? Because my poor brain forgets about the Cafe in the off week! I've now gotten out of the habit of posting weekly, and now its tuesday and I've only just remembered its a topic week!!

Also, I think we have too many topics. We should stick to one or two. That way each one will get more attention. I tend to check out just the ones on the topic that I posted about. I know I should check the others, but often I dont get around to it.

Both are my bad, but I'm thinking I'm not the only one. But perhaps I'm wrong.
Not feeling too good tonight, so I will try to post a topic tomorrow.
Doing great Nance1 ((HUGS))

I agree with Mia. I would only be able to participate in one 'heavy' conversation and I'd tend to stick with what I've written about and visit those people... Just my 2 cents from a newcomer.

Italian Culture is not blocked from my site.  Notice that my comment was not directed at any individual.  As usual, I am left wondering why he feels like I was talking to him if he knows that he was not guilty of the issues I stated.  I am even more bewildered as to why it had to turn into a public rant here.  These types of games are probably why so few people are even bothering to participate anymore.  I know it is about to make me think twice about it...

I voted for the two week period, and it's true that I would not have been able to participate in either of the last two cafes if it hadn't have been for that extended time period.  But I have noticed a dramatic drop off in participation, and the second week is almost nonexistent.  I was disappointed last week enough that I was going to change my vote, even if that means that I can't participate as thoughtfully or adequately.  It is important to me that more people participate than that I can participate how I want to.

Mystery,

I am not blocked. I am not now, atleast, but unfortunately for you there was a problem on your blog since a few posts i tried to write on your previous blog entries are lost forever in the limbo of the net.

I apologize i accused you. I thought it was your intention.

I don't have a big lot of time to write new posts (infact i don't participate every time), but i like deep discussions.

Sometimes i note that some discussions, on mine or others' blog,  just end up like if there is no more to say, even if actually they are still open. So that i am for example waiting for an answer that i won't ever have, and i think it is because the person i am waiting is busy thinking to the next topic. That's a pity, since the discussion could be deeper and some subject can come out better.

This, just to say that i prefer the two-weeks period for deep discussions instead a one-week period for a superficial one. I believe that looking to others' blogs and participate to the discussion we are interested in is much more interesting than just "close the drawer" and think of something else.

ciao

dario

Thanks for the input on the length of the discussions. I would prefer, though, that we use this blog to post links for new participants. I am planning to put up another post in a few days so that we can discuss our time frame again.

To tychecat and all, here's my post on the state religion topic.http://www.xanga.com/anniemomz/447982728/item.html

I also think Nance1 is doing a great job. If we change topics every week, then I feel we should only have one or two topics, but if we go for two weeks, maybe it would be easier with more topics. Just conjecturing - I like it either way. I do have some trouble lately getting around to some of the other postings but I'm trying. I love this forum and would hate to see it disappear. Peace and blessings on all.

I'll just answer this here, because my response is short... I chose the question "When is war justified?"

My answer: When the outcome of said "peace" will obviously be graver then the outcome of the intended war.

God bless,

*Shan*
