It's still the cross....

I was searching for a video of Still the Cross by FFH and found this one. This one happens to be about Virginia Tech, and I was not looking for that, but it's certainly appropriate. I would like to see someone make a video about the war, with this song. It's one of my favorites.

STILL THE CROSS

Sometimes it seems the world's unraveling around us
We fear it all may one day come undone
We can't forget the One who came before us
To forgive the past and bring hope for what's to come

When it all comes crashing down
The cross still stands alone
And on this our faith is built
And our courage is made strong

When the world falls apart
And you fear for your heart
There's a tower of peace
It's still the cross

So bring your sick and your poor
And your longing for more
To the place of relief
it's still the cross
There is hope for the lost
It's still the cross

Sometimes it seems that I have been forgotten
I don't know how I will make it on my own
But the One who said I will never be forsaken
He still hears my prayer and I will never be alone

When it all comes crashing down
The cross still stands alone
And on this our faith is built
And our courage is made strong

When the world falls apart
And you fear for your heart
There's a tower of peace
It's still the cross

So bring your sick and your poor
And your longing for more
To the place of relief
it's still the cross
There is hope for the lost
It's still the cross

Though the world may not confess
You and Your holiness
One day all will see
You in all Your majesty
And the cross will stand alone
As the place where You made known
Your love for all mankind
Till then in it we'll hide

When the world falls apart
And you fear for your heart
There's a tower of peace
It's still the cross

So bring your sick and your poor
And your longing for more
To the place of relief
it's still the cross
There is hope for the lost

When the world falls apart
And you fear for your heart
There's a tower of peace
It's still the cross

So bring your sick and your poor
And your longing for more
To the place of relief
it's still the cross
There is hope for the lost

It's still the cross

There is hope for the lost
It's still the cross
It's still the cross.

Deer Park Police Chief Dies

There is a huge sinkhole in the town of Daisetta, about 60 miles NE of Downtown Houston. It is formed from a salt dome that is collapsing. You can read about it HERE. Much of our area is built over salt domes. Including part of the Clear Lake area, south of Houston. That's where NASA is located. In 1983, a salt dome collapsed in Boling, TX, just down the road from my aunt's house, but it was nowhere as big as the one in Daisetta.

The kittens are getting to the really cute stage, where they play a lot. They are bouncing each other like Tigger does Pooh Bear. And now they are climbing, too, so there is no telling where I might find them.

We had a doctor's appointment this morning at 9:20, but we had to reschedule. Beth was so weak from eating almost nothing since Sunday afternoon. She did not have the strength to get up. And she had gone all night without her nausea medication because she slept through the night.

But now she's hungry. Scrambled eggs sounded good to her, so she has eaten a bunch of them, along with quite a bit of bacon. Things are starting to stay down this afternoon and she has been starving. I think we are beginning to see the light of day.

Her doctor's appointment is tomorrow afternoon at 3:00. That was all he had available. I wanted to go to Holly's graduation from nursing school, but it is also at 3:00 tomorrow. Can't be 2 places at one time

One kitten still managed to disappear. I cannot find it anywhere. The other 6 are in the utility room and they are having a good time. They like coming in the house. Mamma tried to get them to come with her, but they mostly ignored her. I wish I knew where the other kitten was. I believe it is the same one that was stuck in the wall.

Our police chief died Sunday morning, but I had not heard that. I don't always read the Deer Park paper. Today as I as going to the bank, I passed the cemetery as the graveside service was being held. It is next to our Walmart.  I didn't have my camera with me, but I had my phone. I pulled in a parking lot across the street and took a bunch of pictures. I always think it's impressive to see the fire trucks at the cemetery entrance:

Fire trucks

Fire dept vehicles

They had county constables and fire department members directing traffic at the entrance.

It's probably hard for you to see, but cars at this funeral lined the streets inside the cemetery, from the front to the back. This picture was taken from the parking lot of the funeral home next to it. My aunt, uncle and cousin are buried just to the left of this picture:

Bill Young

May 5, 2008, 4:46PM
Bill Young Jr., Deer Park police chief, dies at 60

Deer Park Police Chief Bill Young Jr., 60, died Sunday morning at Bayshore Medical Center in Pasadena.

He had struggled with serious medical problems for some time, said Assistant Chief Kenneth Findley, who declined to give more detail about Young's illness.

Young, who had continued to do his job, became ill at home and went to the medical center emergency room on Sunday. He died there about 6:30 a.m., said Findley, who will be serving as chief in the interim.

"He was a great man and a great chief," Findley said of Young, who became Deer Park's police chief in 2000.

"He will be sorely missed by all the members of the police department and community," Findley said. "He was a good man and a good friend."

An FBI Academy alumnus, Young held a master's degree from Sam Houston State University and was a certified master peace officer in Texas.

He was a member of various police associations and also participated in local civic organizations, including the East Harris County Chemical Plant Security Committee, the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce and the Harris/Galveston County Maritime Security Committee. He served on the Criminal Justice Board at San Jacinto College and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl, and a son and a daughter.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at Grand View Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 8501 Spencer Highway in Pasadena. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Deer Park, 438 E. 8th St. The Young family recommends that memorial contributions be made to the 100 Club. Call 713-952-0100 or visit www.the100club.com.

Here is another article on him.

He died on Bethany's birthday, so that will be easy to remember. My cousin also died on Beth's birthday, when she was one year old.

Day 3 isn't starting out that well, either...

I'm waiting for a call back from the doctor about getting Beth something stronger for the pain, and something for the nausea. She can't keep down anything. She is so weak, it's hard for her to get up at all. And sometimes she has to.

And tonight is the church business meeting. And I didn't not get anywhere close to enough sleep last night. I was up till 2:30. I stayed up to make sure Beth tried to eat enough before she took her next dose of pain meds. Then I got up at 7:30.

Day 2 is not a good one....

10:30 p.m....Beth is not able to keep any food down. She also can't keep the pain meds down. It's time to take it again, but if she can't keep it down there's no point in taking it. But she's in pain. She's so frustrated because she is weak from not eating much. Please continue to pray. I'm making Jello. She's got to try something to get some sugar into her system. She's been sipping ginger ale.

Kittens are safe, but Mamma is not happy.  Edit: Mamma Kitty started taking the kittens out and putting them under the fire log pile beside the house. She got 2 of them and I had to keep her from taking the rest of them. One came out from under the pile and I grabbed it, but we had to move some logs to grab the other one. I have now taken the kittens from her. They are eating soft cat food, so they will not starve. I don't want the kittens to be outside because they will wander out in the street and get run over.

We had pulled a bunch of junk out of the garage, we were a mess, and the house is a mess. So one of Beth's friends that she use to work with showed up with flowers and balloons.  A nightmare came partially true.

Sunflower line

Today I have to round up all the kittens and try to put them in a safe place. They are 4-1/2 weeks old now, and they are getting big. They are starting to get out of the garage by themselves.

Beth is much more comfortable in her bed than she was on the couch. So...we carried, pillows, crutches, her purse, computer, all her medication, lots of ginger ale and saltine crackers for nausea and a few other things upstairs. Of course she can't walk and crutches on stairs are dangerous. So she sat on the stairs and scooted up each step. She made it, but I don't think she'll be going up and down too much. She has power bars up there in case she gets hungry. I told her I'll keep my cell phone with me tonight, and she can call me if she needs me.

She says she can give herself the blood thinner shot in her belly in the morning. We'll see.

We're home

8:30 p.m....Well, I thought maybe her pain was getting better, but the bad pain is back. I just had to call the doctor to see if he can call her in something stronger for the pain. It's the kind of pain where you just moan because it hurts so bad. (9:00....the doctor just called back and doubled her pain meds.)

Sunflower line

Just got home. Surgery went fine, but was very long. She's in a lot of pain.

Thank you to all of you who sent messages and prayers. And when she turned her phone back on in the car, there was a text message from Scott. Edit: And then late tonight, she talked to Ethan online. She talked to Adam on MySpace. Everybody has been so good to check on her and pray for her. I really appreciate it.

On the way home, we drove through Walmart's parking lot, because she wanted to wave at Jim (he's the door greeter) like she was in a parade. So the manager and others came out to see her. She had to tell them how to fix a computer problem while she was there. Our daughter, the computer geek. But I'm glad her bosses think enough of her to want her there, because they know she can fix a problem.

One of the nurses at the hospital is one of Beth's regular Walmart customers. She told Beth she better get well, so she could check out with her at Walmart.

The kitties were glad to see her.

Beth after surgery

She has to wear a compression stocking on the right leg to keep down the possibility of bloodclots, as well as have a shot of a blood thinner in the stomach once a day.

The left foot is in a half cast and is bandaged heavily. She had a ruptured tendon that had to be repaired. The stress fracture has apparently healed itself. He said the thing he originally called a bone cyst, is nothing to worry about. They broke the heel bone and repositioned it. It has a huge screw up through the bottom of the heel. He split a tendon length-wise, drilled a hole in a bone, looped half the tendon through that,  re-attached the tendon at the original spot, and filled in the hole with "bone putty". I wondered if they can get that at Home Depot. He did not have to break the bone on the top of the foot. He thought he might. He said after 8 weeks, she has to have a lot of physical therapy, not only to strengthen the joint, but to loosen the Achilles Tendon. It is so tight now that it makes it difficult to flex her foot.

In pre-op, Beth and I started laughing so hard, one of the nurses thought I was crying. She asked me if I was alright. But we were listening to all the questions being asked of other patients...and then hearing the answers....and some of them were just stupid. And we just couldn't keep a straight face.

One nurse asked a patient if she was taking cholesterol lowering medication to lower cholesterol   Steve said, "No...we just like the taste." The same woman who takes that medication said she had both her thyroids removed (You only have one. I has 2 sides, but it's one thyroid.) And she said she didn't need her glasses to see...only for writing.

They have signs above the beds that say because of the privacy act, they are required to ask you if it's ok to ask all these health questions in front of the people who might be with you. Yet, it's ok to ask them within earshot of every other patient and their visitor in the pre-op room. The beds are only separated by a curtain.

Beth said, "Step outside the curtain so you won't hear the answer!"
