prom

I got asked to prom.

But I actually wanted someone else to comment on one of the biggest debates in Evangelical Christianity.  My friend sent me and some other people an email telling of her passion for the church to accept homosexuals.  She quoted some scripture and claims that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality.  She also gave this link.  What do you guys think?

OK, no one seems to be commenting, which might mean that no one reads your blog, or that no one is bold enough to state their opinion on the matter.  Either way, I feel sorry for anyone who asks for feedback on a blog and doesn't get any, so even though I try not to talk publicly about the topic, here's my answer to your question:

Homosexuality seems, from what I understand, to be a psychological disorder.  This is an unpopular view, but I'm told the main reason it's not generally referred to as a "disorder" is political and not scientific.  In animals, homosexual activity is considered "sexually aberrant" behavior.  I think it can be influenced by such factors as population density.

The Bible doesn't say much about homosexuality, and those passages in which it does talk about it seem (to someone with an agenda anyways) to be open to several interpretations.  I definitely think it's a great sin of the Church that they have condemned homosexuals for so long, implying that all it would take is a simple decision on their part to join the "moral" heterosexual crowd.  The Bible also condemns drunkenness, but condemnation is the last thing an alcoholic needs if he is to kick his habit (and he certainly can't make a simple willpower decision to stop drinking).  I see homosexuality, and alcoholism, as things that God wants to free us from.  But of course if it affects you personally, you may have great difficulty in WANTING to be freed from it, especially since it's not at all clear whether it can be accomplished in this lifetime (and thus you may be putting yourself through hell on earth without achieving any result).  Here it is important to understand that God loves us BEFORE we've taken a single step in His direction; none of this blackmailing talk about how God would love someone even more IF they could give up their vice, or their sexual orientation, or whatever.

So should homosexuals be allowed in the church?  Well obviously it depends on what we mean by "homosexuals": struggling? practicing?  prosletysing?  militant?  And then of course what we mean by "in the church": preaching?  serving?  members?  attenders?

The Bible does actually seem to say more about divorce and remarriage (or Jesus does anyway) than about homosexuality, so I guess to be consistent you'd have to go the same way on both issues.  But I still find alcoholism the easiest thing to compare it to, probably because both addiction and homosexuality appear to be psychological disorders condemned in the Bible.

Would I stop an alcoholic from coming to church?  Of course not.  Would I stop him from becoming a member or a preacher?  It depends.  I think if he admits to having a problem, you can't really refuse him membership (although preaching is another issue since it may still be questionable whether he's spiritually capable of feeding a flock).  But if he comes with an agenda to change the church without including the possibility of allowing God to change him, I think I'd advocate refusing membership.  Ditto for "homosexual" in place of "alcoholic".  Ditto for anyone, really.  The church isn't to be comprised of people whose main goal is to change it, but of people who are willing to allow the change to begin with them.

Chrissy, I always read your blog. I just don't have much to say.

How are you doing? Hope to hear something new from you.

Chrissy, why does the church feel that it has to say anything against homosexuals?

I mean I can write a huge essay on biblical proofs of what you should do, but let me tell hit you with some questions.
Did you know that the Greeks were known for sleeping with little boys, worshipping idols, and walking around naked?
Do you know that Jews stick to the very letter of the law?
Did you know that the Jews got along greatly with the Greeks, even when they were on one of the highest spiritual levels at the time?

Did you know that Alexander the Great slept with men?
Do you know that the High Priest in Israel would never even think about doing that?
Did you know that  Alexander the Great became friends with the High-Priest...and that the whole nation of Israel named an entire generation after Alexander the Great? And this was a time that Israel was very against idol worshipping, yet Israel ended up naming an entire generation of religious Jews after a known homo-sexual and idol-worshipper!

How could they do that?!  Well, the short answer is they really didn't focus on Alexander's sin, they focused on  his qualities. What was that? He was a nice guy....how do we know that? because he came to Jerusalem to wipe it out, but then he decided not to. And in my book that makes a "nice guy".

So how does this all help you out? It doesn't really. Unless you say to yourself, "Hey, what's good for the goose, is good for the gander."
