I'm sorry about the long delay in getting back to work here. Out here in the woods I have two means of internet communication and I don't recommend either. Last year I installed a satellite broadband (well medium band) link but fortunately kept my old slow dialup current. The satellite is very finicky and as a cold front and thunderstorms are arriving fast, it is of course not functioning, which seems to be mostly the case, so I'm posting this via 28k dialup.

I think there is enough interest in the present economic downturn, which is affecting the whole world by now, that it might be a good topic for discussion; so let's start with a more or less personal question:

What has been the impact of the recent Economic Downturn on you or your friends? What do you think the primary causes of the downturn are? What are you doing to cope?

Next Week's Topics - Your Choice!

I'm making my annual trek to Maine - starting tomorrow morning (Thursday, June 26) and will be out of touch until Sunday or Monday. I use a satellite broadband connection up there and it's not very dependable so my fall-back is a very slow dialup. I'm pretty far out in the woods so please be patient.

Next week, let's do a Socratic Swing. You write your topic essay/question at your site and announce it below with a link or your site address. I'll visit them all next week and announce them here if necessary.

So what really interests you?
One thing about this blog; it does ask members to call the shots and tries to start discussions of interest to most of us.
Well then, how about some new and different topics - we do seem to attack the same subjects from every conceivable angle.
Please contribute your suggestions below. If we get a bunch, we'll vote. If we get only a few, maybe we'll combine them.
In any event, we should have a new topic or two up early next week

Maybe we should give both politics and our personal focused concerns a brief rest and attempt to see what our attitudes toward the future of mankind involve.

An Interesting Week - What's Next?

We certainly can't complain about participation this week! I want to thank all those who contributed ,both topics and comments. The range of topics stretched from a world without oil all the way to modern additions to The Delphic Oracle's aphorisms.
Several extensions to these topics have been suggested. What do you want to do next?

Unfortunately I noticed a tendency toward personal criticisms in some of the comments. Please don't do that - attack the ideas, not the person who expressed them

Our active membership seems to be declining. Maybe it's just a seasonal phenomenon, but I'm open for suggestions as to how to make the site more interesting. Please comment below.
We've had a number of suggestions about timely topics ranging from the petroleum crisis to racial politics.
Maybe the time has come for a "Socratic Swing" where everyone writes on his own topic and notifies me here so I can announce their topic and link them.
So, this next time, let's each try our own favorite/ current interest topic.
