Trip to Chicago

I was just in Chicago this past weekend to play in a volleyball tournament with some friends (and some people I've never met before).  I had a great time.  However, I haven't played in a tournament such as this (with all guys) in a while, and my arms suffered for it.

The drive up from St. Louis on Thursday was gorgeous.  We had such perfect weather ALL weekend, which was especially wonderful since it had been painfully hot earlier in the week.  In St. Louis on last Monday, the heat index was 115 degrees.  I told my mom that Missouri was trying to kill me.

Two of my teammates, at Circuit (a bar) in Chicago the night before the tournament.  Tim (right) and Terry are usually more jovial looking, which makes this picture funnier.

Terry and his friend "Jeremy Piven," who was such a nice guy, he not only let me take his picture, but when he was VERY sweaty and brushed up against me at the tournament the next day, he laughed and told me I could keep his sweat as a souvenir.  It was very funny.

Volleyball moves so fast, we are blurry!!

Serve me serve me serve me!  It will hurt my poor arms, but I will give my setter a great pass and you will be sorry!

My poor arms on Sunday after the tournament.  Blood from all the swelling and bruising was pooling in the bend of my elbows, so I looked like a chronic heroin user.  Guys at the tournament made all sorts of jokes that I should shoot up between my toes instead.

It hurt a lot, but I knew that if I cried at the tournament where I was the ONLY girl playing, I would never ever EVER live it down.  So, instead I got a little irritable, which seemed to work though it wasn't nearly as satisfying as sitting down and having a good cry would have been.

My right arm this morning.  My skin's so yellow, it looks jaundiced.  My arm's liver has shut down!

A gross close-up of my right arm.  Blech!

Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts
By Carol Tavris, Elliot Aronson

Excuse me, my cynicism is showing.

Has anyone ever called you perfect before?
only in the most sarcastic of tones.

Are you currently wanting any piercings or tattoos?
definitely.  i currently have plans for 2 new tattoos.  no piercings though.

Do you sleep on your side, stomach, or back?
side/stomach, depending. in the morning, i love to sleep on my back.  dunno why

Has anyone ever told you you have pretty eyes?
not in a while, but i've heard that in the past.

Can you handle the truth?
if it's actually true, then absolutely.

Favorite fair food?
i have no idea.  i can't think of when i've eaten something at a fair recently.  i once went to a sweet corn festival, and the corn was fantastic.  does that count?

Have you ever liked somebody and never told them?
obviously, since i'm a fully functioning human being.

Have you ever kissed anyone named Katie?
never had the pleasure, no

What would you do if someone told you that you were the most beautiful person in the world and they would do anything to wake up to your face each and every morning?
at this point, i would be incredibly cynical and probably scoff.  and then i would remember my manners and politely say, "thank you."

Do you trust all of your friends?
in my own way, i suppose

Would you move to another state or country to be with the one you love?
interesting question at this point in my life.  i suppose, in some way, that i would.  but it would have to be pretty extraordinary circumstances and i would have to know that the person really *wanted* me to do such a thing.  so, a better answer would be: no.

believe that everything happens for a reason?
not at all.  i believe that things happen because of actions that we take - you, me and everybody else.

Would you make a good parent?
maybe someday.  not at the moment though.

Where was your default picture taken?
stephens college in columbia, mo

Morning or night person?
anything but morning.  blech.

How do you think you look right this moment?
business-casualy, since i just got back from teaching a mini-workshop

Last time you smiled?
when one of my students this morning said, "I am unstoppable!" when he was figuring out how to solve problems in a game.

Do people underestimate your intelligence?
i haven't the slightest clue.

Are you taller than 5'5''?
yes, and i have been for quite a long time.  15+ years, i think.

Would you rather have love or money?
at this point, money.  i mean, they both have the tendency to be faithless and inconstant, but at least i can get what i want with money.

Have you ever been punched by someone of the opposite sex?
not since i was a little kid

Have you ever dated someone for longer than a year?
of course.

Have you ever told someone you were single when you really weren’t?
no, but i have said i *wasn't* single when i was, just to avoid a conversation with a creepy guy who was hitting on me.

Have you ever been to a tanning bed?
no.  my people are PALE, and i plan to stay that way.

Has anyone ever borrowed something from you and never returned it?
obviously.   for example, i haven't seen my virginity in *years*

Today did you hug a person you have feelings for?
no. i haven't hugged anyone in quite a while

How much money is in your wallet?
around $50.

What kind of car do you drive?
i usually walk.

Have you ever been punched in the face?
again, not since i was a child and was running around like a little hellion.

Do you ever get depressed?
sometimes, when circumstances call for long, melancholy moments of brooding

When is the last time you cried?
two days ago, when i was reading "Mistakes Were Made (but not by me)."  Holy whiskers on kittens, some of that book was hard to read.  good for me, but difficult too.

Ever been on a motorcycle?
yup.  crashed on too.  sometimes i think about getting my own.  maybe someday.

Do you think you're pretty/handsome?
eh, i'm okay.

Do you go to church?
only as a favor to someone i love. like my parents, but otherwise, no.

Do you have a driver's license?
yeah.

Do people usually like you?
generally, yeah.  i'm usually pretty affable.

Are you emotionally sensitive?
probably, but i have good armor for just that reason.

What brand of shirt are you wearing now?
Eddie Bauer.  Are you saying there are other kinds of shirts???

Did you shower today?
yes. i shower everyday.  i find it to be a pleasant experience.

Complete the sentence 'By This Time Next Year':
things will be different, and yet, somehow the same.

Do you believe "once a cheater always a cheater?"
not particularly, but i don't believe a lot of sayings that include the word "always."

What is your goal for this year?
keep walking every day, make more friends, maintain my 4.0, learn more, grow more, be a better person.  little things like that.

Do you like to travel?
yes, but i don't do it often, unfortunately

What is your favorite kind of food?
simple food

Can you cook?
if i want to, yes.  but mostly i choose not to, because it's hard to get access to the kitchen where i currently live.  hence: simple food.

Where exactly are you from?
good question.  i might actually come up with an answer for that someday.  i'll let you know.

What's your favorite drink?
skim milk or water.  (though some people would say, "what's the difference?")

What kind of movies do you enjoy?
smart movies, smart movies that make me laugh

Do you have a close family?
Yes, and at the same time, a resounding no.

Do you have any big plans that will occur soon?
going to Chicago this weekend, moving next weekend, school starts in 2 weeks, going to Columbia Labor Day weekend, big work thing in September, and a wedding too.  so, yes.

If you aren't married, do you ever wish to get married?
maybe someday. we'll see.

Do you enjoy working at your workplace?
Yes, and at the same time, a resounding no.

Do you have any piercings or tattoos?
2 tattoos, but only my ears are pierced, to the profound gratitude of my mother, i'm sure.

What is your usual bed time?
usually i'm a night owl, but this week has been different, so i'm usually asleep by 11:30 or midnight.

Do you have your own laptop?
yes, though it's quite old.  my little powerbook is a trooper!

What is on the walls around you?
paint.  2 bulletin boards.   a picture.

Do you get bored easily?
no.  and people who do get bored easily irritate me. to me, it indicates a lack of curiosity and self-sufficiency.  someone once said "only boring people get bored."  which i don't 100% agree with, but it's a good point nonetheless.

Would you be ok with being a step parent?
absolutely.  being a step-parent, especially a good one, is an incredibly honorable thing to do.

1.

WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
of course.  a name like mine almost HAS to be a family name, does it not?

2.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
earlier today

3.

DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING
I suppose so.  It can look quite nice if I take the time and notice to write neatly.

4.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Dunno.  I don't eat a lot of "lunch meat" typically.  Though now that I think about it, my favorite, truly, is leftover Thanksgiving turkey meat.

5.

DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Nope, and thank the light for that.  I have enough trouble keeping track of myself!

6.

IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
Sure I would!  I'd have all the same interests, sense of humor, and snobberies as me, as we'd get along famously.  Unless, of course, you meant "if you were a DIFFERENT person"  in which case, that's an entirely new question.  If I wasn't myself, I don't know whether I would be friends with me because I don't know what kind of person I would be if I wasn't me.  But I like me and think I'm fun, so there's hope that a different-me would like the me-me just as much.

7.

DO YOU USE SARCASM?
Not as much as I used to.  I don't find it to be effective anymore, or honest, I suppose.

8.

DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
As far as I know.

9.

WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
Maybe, but I haven't yet, so that probably doesn't bode well for my bungee-jumping future.

10.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?
Honey Nut Cheerios, and if you know me well, you'd know that was a silly question.  Sometimes I wonder why they even BOTHER making other cereals.  I do sometimes branch out towards Life or Frosted Mini-Wheats, but I always return to my safe, yummy Cheerios home a little guilty, with promises never to stray again.

11.

DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?
No, mostly because the shoes I wear often don't have laces.

12.

DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
I think that like most people, I have my moments of strength and my moments of weakness.  One just hopes the former outnumbers the latter, and lately, I'd say that it does.

13.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?
I have pretty simple tastes - I like a good vanilla ice cream with just one or two additions - like fresh slices of a peach or a little caramel.

14.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Usually, I guess I notice the big picture: how they carry themselves, their bearing, and main features (height, hair color, etc).

15.

RED OR PINK?
Red.  I think it's a nice fun, strong color.  In fact, I wore a red shirt just today.

16.

WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF?
I don't forgive easily.  Unfortunately.

17.

WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST?
I don't know.  I'm not really near a single person I love, so my Miss List is quite lengthy.

18.

DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO SEND THIS BACK TO YOU?
If they want to fill it out, then I will read it.

19.

WHAT COLOR PANTS AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING?
black shorts.  no shoes, since I'm in bed.

20.

WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?
rice, though I'm seriously considering a Milano cookie.

21.

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
traffic outside, Tom Waits and others on iTunes.  I'm currently stuck on Teddy Thompson's version of Leonard Cohen's "Tonight Will Be Fine."

22.

IF YOU WHERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE?
Hmmm, probably an earth-toned Crayon, hopefully a green of some sort.

23.

FAVORITE SMELLS?
fresh bread, soapy-clean skin, a gym full of volleyball players, bleached laundry, my mom's house, other smells too personal to mention

24.

WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE?
Margaret Campbell!!  Yay for Margaret Campbell!

25.

DO YOU LIKE THE PERSON WHO SENT THIS TO YOU?
Definitely.

26.

FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH?
Cardinals baseball.  Or really any sport.  I really like sports.

27.

HAIR COLOR?
Dark brown.

28.

EYE COLOR?
Greenish-hazel

29.

DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS?
Yup.  And I don't really like them.  I mean, I'm grateful to be able to see without any apparatus ON my face, but still, I don't like them.

30.

FAVORITE FOOD?
Potatoes, probably.  Check out The Potato Song [via YouTube], it's my theme song.

31.

SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?
Neither, I guess. I don't like scary movies and I tend to be disdainful of happy endings since I'm a cynic.

32.

LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
The last 2 Netflix movies I watched were "The Kite Runner" and "Broken English."  I liked both of them, though for different reasons, obviously.  Now I have "Death at a Funeral" and "Black Snake Moan" but I haven't watched them yet.

33.

WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING?
I'm wearing a white tank top.

34.

FAVORITE SEASON?
I love when Spring arrives, but Fall is definitely my season.  I feel my best in the Fall.

35.

HUGS OR KISSES?
It depends.  I don't like hugging random people, but if it's someone I WANT to hug, then that's the best.

36.

FAVORITE DESSERT?
Ice cream.  Definitely ice cream.  I like cake and some pies, but I could live without them.

37.

MOST LIKELY TO RESPOND?
Neal9, probably.  :)

38.

LEAST LIKELY TO RESPOND
Ashley, since she's so quiet these days.  Okay, she's ALWAYS quiet.

39.

WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW?
I am reading the most wonderful books right now!  I'm going through M.F.K. Fisher's entire collection and I couldn't possibly be happier.  I've read "Consider the Oyster" and just finished "The Cordiall Water:  A Garland of Odd & Old Receipts to Assuage the Ills of Man or Beast."  Both were witty, irreverent, and absolutely fascinating.  Next, I have "The Gastronomical Me" and "Among Friends."  I can't wait!

She's the only writer I know who can write about something I know NOTHING about and yet make me laugh out loud. Seriously.  I think my roommates think I'm honestly crazy now.  I mean, I've never even SEEN oysters being eaten, except on tv. But I read her whole little book on oysters and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I'm also reading a terrifyingly uncomfortable book called "Mistakes were Made (but not by me)."  It's currently blowing my mind like nothing quite has since I left Stephens College and the couch of Tina Parke-Sutherland.

40.

WHAT IS ON YOUR MOUSE PAD?
I have a lap top and no mouse.  Sad.

41.

WHAT DID YOU WATCH ON TV LAST NIGHT?
I don't own a TV.  Haven't since 2003, though I've certainly enjoyed other people's televisions at times.  I've been very glad not to have one in the house where I live now.  I've gotten much more done and much more read!

42.

FAVORITE SOUND?
laughter in my family or of anyone that I love, a gym full of volleyball players, my cat purring, the quiet white noises of a library, other sounds too personal to be mentioned here

43.

ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES?
Of the two, I prefer the Beatles, but I'm not a lifetime fan of either.  Wrong generation, I guess.

44.

WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME?
I think I've felt farthest from home when I haven't actually been that far.  Mostly though, I don't really have strong associations with "home" since I move so much and my family and loved ones are so spread out.  Home is where I feel love and loved, so home is many but infrequently visited places and people.

45.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
I dunno what would count as a special talent.  I am passably good at pretty much anything I try. Does that count?  I'm pretty good at avoiding and diffusing a conflict, even ones I cause.  I can steal the covers like there's a riot on, even stealing them from myself sometimes.  But if "special  talent" means something that nobody else can do or at least most people can't do, then I'm not sure I have one.

46.

WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
in the great state of Ohio.

47.WHOSE ANSWERS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK?
Anyone's answers would be enjoyable.

Summer Snapshots

A tree in the park, near the Arch, taken on a contemplative day.

The St. Louis MetroLink train station I most frequently use.

A stalwart tree on the UM - St. Louis north campus, taken while walking to class one day.

Self-portrait, taken before going to a BBQ/party.

The new baby in the family, with whom I share a birthday, and who I think mildly resembles Ed Asner (in an endearing, wonderful way).

If there were such a thing as "Goodbye Forever Presents," I suppose this would qualify.  A sad little package for a sad little day.

Fireworks downtown, with my darling friend Tim this past Saturday.  He was driving through town, stopped for dinner with me, and we wandered into a concert and fireworks.  It was wonderful and exactly what I needed on Saturday.  By the time I walked back to the train station, took the train back to campus, and then walked home, I was quite tired.  I cleaned up, read a bit, and went to sleep for 8 solid hours, the first time in almost 8 weeks.

Colby James, sitting on my mom's lap, giving me a dirty look.  Was there ever a better cat??  [Hint: No!]
