This morning, my mom fed the horses (I did not sleep in, and I had every intention of feeding them). So I took Zelda for a walk. I went out around 8:30, and discovered Chilli and Fred were in the grass paddock. I grabbed Chilli, and brought her to the barn. She screamed for a bit, but settled down while I was grooming. Fred continued to scream and pace the entire time I had her out. I gave her a good groom, and then put her back out. I then went up to the paddocks. Kal and Ozzie were close to the east gate. Kal came over when I called her. I brought her down to the barn. Ozzie was not impressed, but he wasn’t as bad as Fred had been. I gave Kal a good groom, and she stood absolutely still and enjoyed it. When Kal was clean, I measured her. Still 16.1HH, and without the hair, 1234lbs. I booted Kal up and took her to the round pen. I had put a cavaletti in earlier, but it was just at pole level. I sent Kal out on a circle. She was a little off the rail at first, but she listened when I corrected her. She insisted on going to the centre of the cavaletti every time, and that’s something I wouldn’t ever “correct”. We did a few laps of walk, and then moved into trot. Kal got the stride perfectly to the pole EVERY time. We did one trot-walk-trot transition, and had half a lap of canter. We then switched directions. We did pretty much everything the same, except Kal decided to keep cantering over the pole (it was none too graceful). I then lifted the cavaletti up to 18”, and sent Kal over it twice both ways. Kal just trotted over it, like an old pro. I raised it to the 2ft level, and sent her around again. Kal could still trot over it, but she made the effort to jump it once or twice. I gave her lots and lots of praise afterward. I took Kal back to the barn, removed her boots and gave her a carrot. I then put Kal out in the grass paddock.

After that, I headed out for Ozzie. He was by the west shelter, but he walked over to the east gate to meet me. I brought him down to the barn. As I expected, he was an idiot at first. But he settled down once I started grooming him. Once Ozzie was clean, I booted him up and did his exercises (which I remembered affter I put his boots on). Ozzie tried to walk off while we were doing the carrot stretches, so I gave him hell for that. I tacked Ozzie up with the side reins, and then took him to the sand ring. Surprisingly enough, Ozzie was awesome on the lunge. He was quiet and calm, and very responsive. I warmed Ozzie up first. We did a few laps of walk, and then moved into trot. After a number of laps, I let him canter one. We then switched directions, and did the exact same thing. I then attached the side reins. Ozzie framed up very nicely the entire time in the first direction, at both the walk and trot. In the second direction, he got a bit tired and couldn’t keep the same frame. Once we were done, I took Ozzie back to the barn. I removed his tack, and gave him a carrot. I put some vaseline on his chest scrape (it was dry), and then put him in the grass paddock.

This morning, I went out a bit before 6. The horses were all in the west paddock. Chilli and Fred were close by, and Kal and Ozzie were way in the back. Fred came down once I went into the paddock with the grain. I gave Fred his bowl. Chilli started making her way over. Kal was on her way down as well. Ozzie suddenly spun and started galloping down, and Kal followed suit. He had to slide to a stop, he was going so fast, and he went right past me. I gave him his bowl. I then asked Kal to back before I let her eat, and then gave Chilli her bowl, who was waiting patiently. I picked out her feet while she was eating. Kal finished first, and went for her usual drink. Ozzie was done not long after. Chilli and Fred took a few minutes longer, but were done at about the same time.

This morning, I went out around 6:30 or so. The horses were off in the east, but they hurried down when they saw me. I led them over closer to the middle gate. I gave Fred his bowl, and then fed Ozzie. I asked Kal to back before I let her eat, and then gave Chilli her bowl. I picked out Chilli’s feet while she was eating. Ozzie finished quickly, and went into the west paddock. The other three took a LONG time to finish. Fred was done first, and then I had to chase him away from Chilli’s bowl. Kal and Chilli were done not long after that, and they all wandered off.

Happy 3rd Birthday Kal!

This morning, I went out around 6:30. Kal, Ozzie and Fred were way off in the east, and Chilli was in the west. They all started down when they saw me. I led Ozzie, Kal and Fred over closer to the middle gate before feeding them. I gave Ozzie his bowl, and then gave Fred his. I asked Kal to back before I let her eat. I left Chilli’s bowl out for her, and she trotted through the gate and over to it. I picked out her feet while she was eating. I then checked on Ozzie’s scrape, which was looking really good so I didn’t put anything on it. Ozzie finished first, and started grazing close by. Kal was done not long after. Chilli and Fred took a few minutes more, but finished at about the same time.

I went out around 8:30. The skies were getting really dark, so I was worried it was going to rain. The horses were out in the east paddock. I called Kal, and she and the others came down. I snapped a few pictures, and then haltered her and brought her down to the barn. I gave her a good groom, and the birds were loud but Kal stayed fairly still. When Kal was clean, I booted her up and took her to the round pen. I sent her out on a circle right off the bat. Kal was awesome, even with me taking pictures the entire time. She went right to the rail when I asked. We did a lap of walk, and then moved into trot. Kal went around like an old pro. We did a trot-walk-trot transition, and then moved into canter. We did a lap of that, and then changed directions and did pretty much the exact same thing that way. When we were done, I hooked up two lead ropes to Kal’s halter, and tied them up as reins. I then hopped on, and attempted to get Kal to walk forward. She did a lot of backing up at first (she was confused, obviously). Every time she moved forward, I gave her lots of praise. Even though I knew she wouldn’t know what it meant, I tried my leg on her. And amazingly, Kal went forward. I lavished praise on her, and tired again, and again she moved forward when I put my leg on. I did it a couple more times, and then whoaed and hopped off, and gave her LOTS of praise. I took Kal back to the barn and removed her boots. Just then, it started raining. I gave Kal some carrots, and then we ran back up to the paddock. Ozzie galloped over, and then ran back to the west shelter, and Kal followed once I let her off.

I went out for the rest of the day. I got back around 6, and went right out to feed the horses. They were way off in the back of the east, but they started down when they saw me. I closed the middle gate, dumped, scrubbed and started refilling the tank. The horses were down by then. I went into the east paddock. I gave Ozzie his bowl, and then fed Fred. I asked Kal to back before I let her eat, and then gave Chilli her bowl. Kal finished quickly, and went to the gate where Andy was. Ozzie finished not long after, and Chilli and Fred were done a few minutes after him. The horses waited by the gate for a bit, and then wandered off.

This morning, I went out around 6. The horses were off in the east, but they came down when they saw me. Kal was the first to arrive, but she hung back so I fed Ozzie first. I then asked Kal to back before I let her eat. I gave Fred his bowl, and then fed Chilli. I hopped over and got the vaseline and hoofpick. I cleaned out Chilli’s feet (since I haven’t brought her down to the barn in a while). Ozzie finished, and wandered off, so I had to follow him to put vaseline on the scrape on his chest (in the hopes that will stop my mom from slathering ointment on it every freaking day. It’s a scrape, not a wound). Fred, Kal and Chilli were still eating. Fred finished, and so did Kal. Chilli walked off when they did.
